A brief 3.6-magnitude earthquake struck the Prescott area in northern Arizona Tuesday.

The earthquake struck about 11:20 a.m., according to the U.S. Geological Survey spokesperson Leslie Gordon. The quake's epicenter, with an estimated depth of about 3 miles, was about 18 miles northwest of Prescott and 6 miles northwest of Chino Valley.

The U.S. Geological Survey website received 321 reports of people feeling the earthquake and they all categorized the quake as a two or three on a scale of 1-10 with 10 being an extreme quake. Most of the reports came from people in Chino Valley and Prescott. A few people reported feeling the quake in the Cottonwood area, east of Chino Valley.

Prescott City Hall executive assistant Patti Crouse, among those who felt the quake, said the event lasted but a couple of seconds.

People at the Chino Valley Town Hall building also felt the earthquake. One person described it as feeling as if a car had struck the building. That person also said the earthquake lasted only a couple of seconds.
