Translation:

In a deeply secretive manner, Geert Wilders and a small team are working on
a film about the koran. 'Fitna' ('Putting to the test') [*)] will have its
premiere in march. 'Of course, I sometimes fear the consequences. But if I
don't fight the islamisation of the Netherlands, nobody will.'

'Look', says Geert Wilders in his parliamentary office. 'This is what I
mean.' The parliamentary group chairman for Partij voor de Vrijheid points
at a report, according to which the archbishop of Canterbury considers the
introduction of some parts of the sharia (the islamic laws) in Western
Europe unavoidable, in the long run. And shakes his head: 'This man hasn't
stood the test which islam puts us to. Likewise minister Maxime Verhagen
[dutch foreign minister] assuring his syrian colleague that my film were not
part of a 'government policy'. For fear of threats, they all retreat.'

Is 'Fitna' a conscious provocation?

'Let the people decide, after they have seen the film. I point at the roll
which is played by the terrifying koran in the islamisation of our society.
Fitna means for moslems 'putting to the test'. Everything which puts their
faith to the test is fitna: unveiled women, alcohol, non-moslems, resistance
against the authority of islam. I use this term in an inverse sense: For me
and for our western democracies, islam is a putting-to-the-test of us. Our
free societies are again threatened, after nazims and communism, by an
imperialist, totalitarian ideology: islam.'

Why do you want to make this film? You already have a stage in parliament?

'In parliament and in my written opinions, I use words. The step from there
to use images appeared logical to me.'

How has the film come about?

'First, I have really read a lot, also the koran, and had conversations. It
was hard to fo find a director and pros, but finally we have been able to
make the film with a small group. Where and how, I won't reveal. The team's
members will remain anonymous, that is in their own interest. I have for
long looked for a title and had a list of dutch and arabic terms. Then I saw
Fitna. All the experts reacted lyrically. Every moslems comprehends in a
second what I mean by that, they tell me.'

What will we get to see?

'In my film, I illustrate texts and verses from the koran with documentary
images, which make visible that the koran is not dead words, but the face of
islam: a danger as big as life. For example, an iman appears there shouting
via a palestine tv station: 'We have ruled the world earlier, and by Allah,
we shall rule the world again.' Ultimately, I acuminate to the situation in
the Netherlands, and we end with a conclusion over the koran and an image of
the prophet. Something will happen with this image. What it is, I won't
reveal.'

Aren't you afraid that the film will provoke violent reactions?

'I am a democrate in heart and soul and use democratic means. It can never
be my responsibility if others react through violence and bloodshed.
Fortunately, dutch moslems have so far reacted in a moderate manner. They
are more adult than mufti Balkenende [prime minister]. He already talks
about a 'crisis' before having seen anything. Through Balkenende's fear and
cowardliness, it appears as if he is busy with a self-fulfilling prophecy.'

Since it became known that you are working on a koran film, the number of
international threats has augmented. Do you want to end as a martyr?

'I am not a hero, and I don't want to die, and I would lie if I said that I
never am afraid; I am only a human being of flesh and blood, after all. I
don't hope that a fatwa (death sentence pronounced by islamitic law
scholars, ed) will be pronounced against me. That would be terrible. I am a
normal dutch boy who has gone into politics and sees the danger of islam,
like many other dutchmen. If I don't say, 'Stop, enough!', nobody does. The
VVD [his old party, before he founded the PVV] is to cowardly. Even Rita
Verdonk [**)] thinks I am too extremist.'

Don't you sometimes feel like giving up?

'I sometimes lose my courage, because of lack of support. But when I see
that opinion polls show that almost ten percent of the population are
backing us, ordinary people who also comprehend that the Netherlands will go
to the dogs, then I know again what is my drive meachnism: We must not lose
our freedom.'

Where will you show the film?

'I don't know yet. Several radio stations have addressed me. Of course I
prefer to have it shown in its total length via television. But it will
definitely appear on the internet.'
