San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom has ended his bid to become governor of California. That leaves state Attorney General Jerry Brown as the likely frontrunner for the Democratic nomination, although he has not formally announced his candidacy.

Newsom lagged in fundraising and political support, despite being endorsed by former President Bill Clinton, a Brown antagonist.

The mayor, who will be termed out next year, said he was withdrawing because of his "young family and responsibilities at City Hall." Newsom recently became a father for the first time.
