DENVER — A group planning to nominate an independent presidential candidate online has won a spot on Colorado's 2012 ballot.
Secretary of State Scott Gessler announced Tuesday that Americans Elect qualified as a new minor political party in Colorado after collecting more than 12,000 valid signatures, about 2,000 more than the minimum number required.
Americans Elect spokeswoman Ileana Wachtel said Colorado is the 10th state where it has won the right to list a presidential candidate. It hopes to be on all 50 by next year's presidential elections.
Any registered voter can participate in Americans Elect's online nominating process and so far 300,000 people have signed up to be delegates, Wachtel said. The group hoped to narrow the field to six candidates this spring and then hold an online nominating convention in June.
Even though Americans Elect is officially listed as a third party in order to earn a spot on Colorado's ballot, Wachtel said the group isn't a political party but a process to select an alternative to the Republican and Democratic candidates.
"It's about taking the power away from the parties and giving it back to the people," she said.
The other states where the group is qualified to list a candidate are Arkansas, Alaska, Arizona, Nevada, Kansas, Michigan, Ohio, Florida and Utah.
