Saboteurs cut fiber cables, knocking out phone, 911, Net service near S.F.
Four fiber-optic cables were deliberately cut in two places early today in San Jose and on the San Francisco Peninsula. Thousands of AT&T, Verizon and Sprint residential customers and businesses lost landline, cell, emergency and Internet service.

An AT&T spokesman said heavy-duty equipment was used to lift manhole covers and cut through the cables, which are about the width of a silver dollar and encased in rugged plastic. One cable contained 360 fibers, the other three 48 each.

Police have no suspects, it's not known when service will be restored.

The San Jose Mercury News and San Francisco Chronicle have details.
