Better headline is "BHO negotiates with Americans instead of mosque builders".

Obama asks for end to anti-Muslim sentiment

The president calls for a renewal of religious tolerance and a cooling of tempers as he attempts to defuse the furor over plans to build an Islamic prayer center and mosque in New York and threats to burn copies of the Koran.

As a candidate, Barack Obama passionately defended the importance of religion in his life and in the nation's politics. As president, Obama on Friday called for a renewal of religious tolerance and a cooling of tempers against Muslims as he tried to defuse the furor over plans to build an Islamic prayer center and mosque in New York and threats to burn copies of the Koran in Florida.

Obama, a Christian whose Muslim name inflames some of his fringe opponents, didn't have to get involved in either dispute. But because of his responsibilities as president and commander-in-chief, Obama said he did.

"This country stands for the proposition that all men and women are created equal; that they have certain inalienable rights -- one of those inalienable rights is to practice their religion freely," Obama said.

"And what that means is that if you could build a church on a site, you could build a synagogue on a site, if you could build a Hindu temple on a site, then you should be able to build a mosque on the site.

Obama said he was aware that some of the 9/11 families were still in pain over the attacks, making a mosque nearby so sensitive.

"Tomorrow we as Americans are going to be joining them in prayer and remembrance," the president said. "But I go back to what I said earlier: We are not at war against Islam. We are at war against terrorist organizations that have distorted Islam or falsely used the banner of Islam to engage in their destructive acts.

The Islamic prayer center and mosque would be built blocks from the World Trade Center, which was brought down two jetliners seized by Islamist terrorists. A third plane was intentionally crashed into the Pentagon, and another plane crashed in a field in Pennsylvania.

Obama began the news conference by saying that the ninth anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks should be a day of remembrance and service. The mosque controversy has become linked to the furor over a Florida pastor's decision to burn copies of the Koran to protest the 9/11 attacks.

"The idea that we would burn the sacred text of somebody else's religion is contrary" to American principles, said Obama, who earlier this week called it a "stunt." "My hope is that this individual prays on it and refrains from doing it," he said.

Obama spoke of his duty as commander-in-chief to protect troops and U.S. interests around the world from Muslim anger over the planned Koran burning. Demonstrations have increased in Muslim countries, especially Afghanistan, where thousands have taken to the streets.

"This is a way of endangering our troops, our sons and daughters," Obama said. "You don't play games with that."

How the threatened book burning by Pastor Terry Jones of the Dove World Outreach Center in Gainesville, Fla., took on world-class dimensions is subject to debate. Many, including some in the Obama administration, have blamed the media's coverage for helping to elevate what is a small church with perhaps 50 members, into a global player.

"It is in the age of the Internet that something can cause us profound damage around the world, so we have to take it seriously," Obama said.

In televised interviews, Jones has gone back and forth, saying he would suspend the burning so he can meet on Saturday in New York with Muslim leaders seeking to build the controversial mosque.

Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf, in charge of the New York effort, said he has no plans for any such meeting.

How about Mr. Obama asking radical Muslims to stop their anti-America sentiment. How about Mr. Obama asking Imams to stop their hate filled speech against America that poisons their followers. How about Mr. Obama representing the interests of the citizens of the United States. How about Mr. Obama securing the borders of the United States of America.

How about Mr. Obama stating LOUD and CLEAR that America HAS NEVER and WILL NEVER hide from or bow down in response to "threats" from radical Islam or any group or country.

(He's incapable of that. Same as Carter)

I just heard Mayor Giulianni talking on the radio. He stated something that most Americans already know. He said that showing any weakness or fear in the face of threats from radical terrorists is the worst and most dangerous stand that we could possibly take. He said that this type of reaction is what led us up to the 9/11 attack.

I've been dealing with Muslim hatred for close to 50 years. I reject their hatred just as I reject the hatred of other groups. I'm very weary of them and their hate so reason and rationality will no longer work with people like me. They can take their money and go home. BHO doesn't even live on the same planet as most Americans. What an @$$! He just inflamed the problem.

#1, prove that you are qualified to be commander-in-chief by showing the correct form of the long birth certificate, not a fake one. #2, stop bowing down to Muslims and siding with their plans to build a cultural center/mosque on the very location that Muslims murdered over 3,000 innocent people.

By the way, who in the hell would want a Muslim cultural center in the center of New York? Who would want to learn about their culture. Its hateful, backward, evil, and uncivilized.
RIP Butterbean! We miss you and hope you are well in heaven.-- Your ALIPAC friends

America's Mayor is right. Remember the embassy attacks, the Cole attacks.
Clinton did little if nothing more than bomb a pharmacy plant in Africa instead of setting sites on Al Qaeda in Afghanistan. and by not going after bin laden in Afghanistan that just made him that much bolder because he thought america would NEVER respond to anyhting because America really had not responded to these attacks i mentioned above

Christians in Gaza Fear for Their Lives as Muslims Burn Bibles and Destroy Crosses

    Published June 18, 2007 by:

After defeating their rivals in Palestinian Authority Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah movement, Muslim extremists are focusing their attacks on Christians in Gaza City. Christians in Gaza City have issued an appeal to the
international community and a plea for protection against the increased attacks by Muslim extremists.

Father Manuel Musallem, head of Gaza's Latin church, told the AP that Muslims have ransacked, burned and looted a school and convent that are part of the Gaza Strip's small Romany Catholic community. He told the AP that crosses were broken, damage was done to a statue of Jesus, and at the Rosary Sister School and nearby convent, prayer books were burned.

Gunmen used the roof of the school during the fighting, and the convent was "desecrated," Mussalem told the AP.

"Nothing happens by mistake these days," he said.

Father Musalam additionally told The Jerusalem Post that the Muslim gunmen used rocket-propeled grenades (RPGs) to blow through the doors of the church and school, before burning Bibles and destroying every cross they could get their hands on.

Catholic Online reports that the heads of Christian churches in the Holy Land have urged both sides to put aside their weapons, noting that the infighting diverted international attention from the national goal of Palestinian independence.

"This domestic fighting where brother draws his weapon against brother is detrimental to all the aspirations of achieving security and stability for the Palestinian people," they said. "In the name of the one and only God as well as in the name of each devastated Palestinian, many of whom are still dying, we urge our brothers in the Fatah and Hamas movements to listen to the voice of reason, truth and wisdom."

One young woman told the Catholic News Service that she was concerned the Islamic extremists would "enforce a strict dress code, forcing women to wear veils and robes." One Christian teenager spoke to the Catholic News Service on the condition that her name not be used. She said the days of fighting had been "very difficult" but they were "OK now."
