An international fugitive, wanted for the murder of a police officer in Brazil, has been captured in South Florida.

Joao Maximiano DeOliveira, 49, was taken into custody in Deerfield Beach Thursday night by a special FBI Fugitive Task Force.

DeOliveira, who also went by the alias, Joao Oliveira, was wanted for the 1991 shooting and murder of a Brazilian police officer.

Several weeks ago, Brazilian government officials contacted the FBI Fugitive Task Force in Miami and asked for assistance in locating and apprehending DeOliveira, who was living in South Florida.

Detectives conducted several surveillance operations on DeOliveira until they finally moved in Thursday night at a home located at 519 SE 8th Avenue in Deerfield Beach. He was taken into custody without incident.

During his interview, investigators say he admitted to the shooting and killing of the police officer in Brazil. He also admitted that he had entered the United States from Mexico, illegally. DeOliveira was turned over to agents from U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for transport and federal booking in Miami.

DeOliveira is being held without bond and will be extradited back to Brazil.
