SAN DIEGO -- A man was detained Wednesday afternoon after driving up to an entrance gate at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar and making what were perceived to be threatening statements to military guards.

The motorist arrived at the base's North Gate shortly before 2 p.m. and confronted the security personnel, according to a statement from the base.

The man, whose identity was not immediately available, was detained. Marine Corps officials closed down the entryway while military and San Diego police questioned the man.

Several residences and commercial buildings in the immediate area were evacuated as a bomb squad searched the suspect's vehicle, and a stretch of Miramar Road was blocked off, military officials said.

The closures remained in effect as of 4 p.m., according to a base spokesman who would not provide his name.Authorities declined to disclose the nature of the alleged threats.
