Should We Intervene in Libya?

Pressures for a no-fly zone are mounting, but we have no business going in unless we’ve thought through exactly what we mean to do.


There are plenty of good arguments for imposing a no-fly zone in Libya. Without Libyan-government air strikes, the rebels might have a better chance of carving out permanent zones of resistance. Qaddafi has a long record of supporting anti-American terrorism, whether in the form of killing Americans in Europe during the Reagan administration or masterminding the Lockerbie bombing that took down a Pan Am 747 jumbo jet, killing 270 in the air and on the ground. In humanitarian terms, Libyans have been living an ungodly nightmare since Qaddafi’s coup in 1969, and it would be a fine and noble thing to lend them a hand to end their four-decade-long misery. The world would be a better and safer place without Qaddafi and his odious clan in power.

Unlike our military action under Ronald Reagan in 1986 (I visited the country on the 20th anniversary of that strike, only to happen upon an unexpected Lionel Richie commemorative concert), intervention now would find the proverbial “peopleâ€

The man is insane and must be taken out of power immediately and citizens should be freed from murders and tortures. I hope if Americans were caught in such trap someone would rescue us as well. God bless all.

It's not the job of the USA to fix Libya. It's the job of Libyans and perhaps their Arab allies. We're not the world's policeman. We can't fix all the world's problems.

Besides, what happens when we do try to help? The rest of the world just complains about the USA sticking it's nose where it doesn't belong!! I'm sick and tired of the ingrates!!

They made their bed, now let them lie in it!! Countries like Libya need to stop looking to the USA to fix their problems and take some responsibilty to fix it themselves!

Or how about if other members of the "Arab world" help them, so the "great satan" doesn't "soil" their dirty desert sand with our "infidel" presence? Where's the Arab League? Why don't they help the Libyan people? Saudi Arabia is rich, why don't they help Libya?

If Americans were caught in such a trap, we'd fight and fix it ourselves and not sit around waiting for someone else to do it for us. We fought the most powerful army in the world at the time to get our freedom.

So what happens when the Saudi's decide they've had enough dictatorship? When things get messy, I suppose we will go and bomb the hell outta them too?

This is not a matter of saving innocent citizens - it's an excuse to go somewhere else we don't belong to get more oil and start more wars. The ripple effect from this boneheaded move might be what really sets the Arab world on fire.
