Republicans existed long before Reagan and we were never social conservatives. We were always social liberals, protectionists, fiscal conservatives with big progressive ideas. We formed our party to free the slaves, establish equal rights for them, amended the Constitution to ensure that protection forever and passed numerous civil rights act to describe how the government was to do that. Republicans pushed for the voting rights of women, fought against the income tax and opposed the creation of the Federal Reserve. We built the first intercontinental railroad, established the interstate highway system and national parks. We passed the first minimum wage, first worker safety laws, and established EPA and OSHA, and until the Bushes, we always protected our trade because without trade protections, everything we worked for would be for naught devoured by the world.

Not sure where the "conservative" story comes from. Republicans are fiscal conservatives but then only to a point because we've always been the big idea people and commit monies and lives to same.

Most Republicans have never cared about family values, outside of making sure to the best of our ability that our families had jobs and income that would support them. Who they slept with, when they reproduced, none of this was ever subjects that interested Republicans, because we're the laissez-faire folks, "leave the people alone" and could truly care less what people do in their private and personal lives.

And anyone interested in small limited government best learn that lesson quick and fast because you can't invade people's lives without a huge government to do it for you, and this Republican sure as hell doesn't want to pay for it.
