4 Police Officers Shot Dead in Oakland, CA

Four Officers in Critical Condition; Suspect Killed

OAKLAND, Calif. — Four officers were in critical condition and a suspect dead on Saturday after two related shootings, the first after a traffic stop and the second after a massive manhunt ended in gunfire, police said.

Two officers were shot in the first incident just after 1 p.m. after they stopped the suspect's vehicle in east Oakland, said Oakland police spokesman Jeff Thomason.

The suspect fled the scene on foot into a nearby neighborhood, police said, leading to an intense manhunt by dozens of Oakland police, California Highway Patrol officers and Alameda County sheriff deputies. Streets were roped off and an entire area of east Oakland shut to traffic.

At about 3:30 p.m. officers, acting on an anonymous tip, found the suspect, who had barricaded himself in a building.

"We had SWAT officers go into that building and that's where the second shooting took place," said Thomason.

The suspect was killed in the exchange, and two more officers wounded.

All four officers are in critical condition at Highland Hospital, Thomason said. Dozens of people, including other officers gathered outside the hospital awaiting word of their colleagues' condition.

Acting Oakland Police Chief Howard Jordan said the department was still investigating.

"At this point we don't believe there are other people involved, but it's too early to tell," he said.

Meanwhile, the mood was somber outside the police station in Oakland as the investigation continued.

"This is a highly sensitive situation that we're dealing with right now with our OPD family, and we're still trying to notify family members that their family members were hurt," Thomason said.

Investigators have not determined the cause of the traffic stop or the first shooting.

The four officers remain in critical condition at Highlands Hospital. The victims names have not yet been released.

Four Oakland Officers Fatally Shot; Gunman Killed

OAKLAND, Calif. (KCBS) -- Four Oakland police officers and a gunman were killed Saturday following a traffic stop which launched a large-scale manhunt that ended in gunfire.

The first shooting occurred about 1:15 p.m. on the 7400 block of McArthur Boulevard near the Eastmont substation. The suspect allegedly shot two Oakland police officers during a traffic stop and fled the scene on foot to a nearby apartment building. The officers fired shots in self-defense and were left in critical condition. They later died from their injuries.

Police officers from several different agencies, California Highway Patrol officers and Alameda County sheriff deputies shut down several city blocks as they searched for the suspect. Streets were roped off and an entire area of east Oakland shut to traffic.

At about 3:10 p.m., police and SWAT officers confronted the suspect at the apartment building. Gunfire was exchanged between the two parties, killing two more officers and the suspect.

Investigators have not determined the cause of the traffic stop or the first shooting.

The victims names have not yet been released.

OAKLAND — Three Oakland police officers were shot to death, one in is critically injured in two separate incidents involving one suspect near the Eastmont police substation this afternoon, a police spokesperson said.

Initial reports from law enforcement sources had stated that four officers were killed. However, police revised that statement a short time ago.

The first shooting happened in the 7400 block of MacArthur Boulevard about 1:16 p.m. today when two motorcycle officers were wounded. What led to the shooting was not immediately known.

About 3:20 p.m., two more police officers were wounded in an exchange of gunfire with the suspect while trying to take him into custody in the 2700 block of 74th Avenue. That suspect was shot and killed.

Officers were walking to the substation consoling each other, some visibly crying, to attend a news conference at 4:30 p.m.

A man who did not want his name to appear in the paper and works at a barber shop on the corner of MacArthur Boulevard and 73rd Avenue, said he heard gunshots from outside and went down the block where he saw two officers laying on the ground near each other.

"I went over to one officer and saw he was bleeding from his helmet pretty bad," he said. "The other officer was laying motionless."

He said the officer laying near a car had two gun shot bullets near in his face. One bullet was lodged in his jaw and the other in his neck.

The man proceeded to give the officer CPR until police arrived on the scene, he said.

Dozens of Oakland police, California Highway Patrol officers and Alameda County sheriff deputies had cordoned off stretches of blocks around 73rd and 74th avenues and MacArthur Boulevard. Helicopters hovered for hours over the crime scene. Officers staked out the neighborhood trying to find the suspects involved.

No one could remember when four officers were shot in the line of duty on the same day.

The last time an Oakland officer was killed was in 2004 when William Seuis, 39, died in a hit-and-run crash.

The Last Oakland Police Officer Killed in the Line Of Duty

On the afternoon of July 22, 2004, the Oakland Police Department suffered the loss of one of it’s most highly respected, veteran Motor Officers. Officer William L. Seuis (39) who had been with the Department for sixteen years was enroute home, in uniform on his assigned motorcycle, traveling Southbound on Interstate 238, when he was struck and run over by a big rig truck. The big rig truck did not stop at the scene of the accident.

Officer Seuis was transported to the Eden Hospital suffering from massive multiple injuries. All efforts to save his life failed and Seuis succumbed to his injuries shortly after arriving at the hospital.

The driver of the big rig truck, Carlos Mares (37) of Union City, who had fled the scene, was arrested approximately 15 minutes after the incident by CHP officers assigned to the Dublin Office. Mares was charged with vehicular manslaughter and felony hit and run.

Felony Hit-And-Run Charges Filed In Oakland Officer's Death

HAYWARD -- The Alameda County District Attorney's office Monday charged truck driver Carlos Mares with one count of felony hit and run for the death of Oakland motorcycle police officer Will Seuis last Thursday.

Mares, 38, also had been arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter for the fatal accident on Interstate Highway 238 near East 14th Street, but Assistant District Attorney Tom Rogers said the California Highway Patrol hasn't finished investigating that charge.

The CHP is in the midst of doing a reconstruction of the accident in which Mares' big-rig allegedly hit Seuis' motorcycle, Rogers said.

Mares was to be arraigned on the hit and run charge this afternoon.

Rogers, who heads the DA's Hayward office, said he has instructed Deputy District Attorney Danielle London to ask Alameda County Superior Court Judge Ronni Maclaren to set Mares' bail at at least $500,000 because there is an immigration hold on Mares and he doesn't want Mares to be deported at this time.

Rogers said Mares has a social security number and a driver's license but there are questions about his citizenship status in the U.S.

Officer Will Seuis a motorcycle patrolman in Oakland, California, was killed on his ride home by an illegal alien. Fortunately some witnesses on the highway immediately phoned 911 and the accused hit-and-run driver, Carlos Mares, was quickly caught. Mares was driving his truck with a commercial load.

A sixteen-year veteran of the Police Department, Officer Seuis was remembered at his funeral as a hard-working cop who had received 33 letters of appreciation from citizens, including one from a motorist he had ticketed. He had been in traffic enforcement since 1998, and was a member of the department's 20-member precision motorcycle drill team. Seuis left a wife, Michelle, and two daughters.

The accused killer has a history of traffic convictions. It's curious that illegal alien Mares has his own business, Mares Trucking.
