Official: 13 gang members arrested during "Operation Disrupt" in north Monterey County

Three-day operation a response to violent crime in north county

Twelve street gang members are in jail and another is in juvenile hall today following a three-day blitz by local law enforcement meant to curb violence in north Monterey County.

The multi-agency effort was called "Operation Disrupt," a response to an increase in violent crime in north Monterey County. Its goal was to disrupt and impact criminal activities, according to the Sheriff's Office.

"Operations like these keep [gangs] on their toes," Sheriff's Deputy Bryan Hoskins said. "It lets them know we're out there and we're paying attention."

From Thursday to Saturday, the Sheriff's Office, along with the Monterey County Joint Gang Task Force, California Highway Patrol, Monterey County Probation Department and the California Department of Corrections Special Services Unit increased parole and probation compliance checks in the area.

As a result, 12 adults and one juvenile were arrested for various felony offenses including possession of stolen property, possession of narcotics, possession of ammunition, attempted murder and parole and probation violations.

Of those arrested, six were from Castroville: Miguel Vargas, 32; Silvia Navarro, 27; Hector Marlow, 37; Francisco Torres, 25; Anthony Garcia, 29 and Alex Alejo, 20.

Navarro, Hoskins said, had a $1 million arrest warrant outstanding for firearms, gang and narcotic charges.

The others arrested were: Juan Lopez, 33, of Royal Oaks; Adam Ramirez, 40, of Royal Oaks; Miguel Cosio, 27, of Pajaro; Pedro Magana, 22, of Las Lomas; Daniel Mora, 28, of Bolsa Knolls; and Joseph Cienega, 23, of Boronda.

My guess would be that Anthony, Alex, Adam, Daniel and Joseph are probably anchor babies.
