New Obamacare Casualties: Over 100,000 NJ Residents Lose Their Plans

Yet another issue with Obamacare? It feels like non-news at this point. After years of conservative warnings about the president’s failed legislation—all that’s left is to watch the fireworks. The Health and Human Services Department already deflated the president’s promise, “”If you like your health care plan, you’ll be able to keep your health care plan,” and now we’re starting to see the results.
So how many people will lose their plan? A couple of hundred? A thousand?
That’s what this administration wants people to believe. But the real number lies somewhere around 106,000…and that’s just for the state of New Jersey. One of the laws primary adages forces insurance companies to cover a predetermined amount of services, and terminate plans that fail to meet those requirements. Unfortunately, for residents of New Jersey, that includes “basic and essential” plans…policies that cost under a couple hundred dollars and provide minimum coverage for check-ups and certain procedures. More importantly, over 71% of New Jersey residents choose this plan for its simplicity and affordability.

According to the Newark Star-Ledger,
“B&E policy holders will, under Obamacare, “be left with may be a choice among pricey, pricier and priciest” plans.
Rutgers University’s Center for State Health Policy director Joel Cantor estimated the expected cost, and determined that the monthly plans of $150 for a 25-year-old male or $1,100 for a family with parents in their 40s will “easily” be three or four times more for a standard policy on the individual market.”
Of the 71% that are enrolled in B&E plans, around a quarter are under the age of 24. It’s no small secret that Obamacare needs young people to enroll, but with these recent developments—the campaigning and convincing just got a lot harder.
