Fox's Hume checks Trump on Comey: 'POTUS told NBC the firing was about the Russia probe'

Fox News senior political analyst Brit Hume fact-checked President Trump on Thursday regarding the president's assertion that he didn't fire former FBI Director James Comey because of the bureau's Russia investigation.

Hume reminded the president on Twitter that he cited the probe as the reason for Comey's dismissal during a May 2017 interview with NBC's Lester Holt.

"Not that it matters but I never fired James Comey because of Russia! The Corrupt Mainstream Media loves to keep pushing that narrative, but they know it is not true!" Trump wrote on Thursday.

"Oh for Pete’s sake. POTUS told NBC the firing was about the Russia probe," Hume commented in retweeting Trump's original remark.

Trump told "NBC Nightly News" anchor Lester Holt on May 11, 2017 that he wanted the FBI’s investigation to “be so strong and so good."

“And I want it [the investigation] to happen,” Trump said. "If Russia did anything, I want to know that.”

“I was going to fire Comey knowing, there was no good time to do it. And in fact when I decided to just do it, I said to myself, I said you know, this Russia thing with Trump and Russia is a made up story, it's an excuse by the Democrats for having lost an election that they should have won,” Trump said at the time.

"As far as I'm concerned, I want that thing to be absolutely done properly," he added. “I said to myself, I might even lengthen out the investigation, but I have to do the right thing for the American people."

Democrats and some Republican lawmakers publicly questioned the timing of Comey's abrupt firing.

Trump told Holt he wanted someone "competent" to handle the investigation while maintaining there was "no collusion between me and my campaign and the Russians."

"I just want somebody that's competent," Trump said. "I am a big fan of the FBI, I love the FBI."

The interview with Holt was his last major broadcast interview outside of Fox News, where he most recently appeared on May 24 for an interview with co-host Brian Kilmeade on "Fox & Friends."

Brit, you got it wrong! You have to actually listen to the whole interview, not rely on CNN snippets from an NBC interview. Comey was fired because he ain't right, he's incompetent, he's a leaker, he's a political hack, and he's a crook. The only relevance the Russia investigation has to the Comey firing, at least as far as Trump is concerned, is if there should be an investigation, which is now highly in question with all that's come out, but not known then, is that Trump wants it handled by a competent FBI with a competent Director and after that infamous Wednesday hearing in Congress, anyone who watched that testimony knew ... Comey had to go. He's a fruit-loop living in fruit-cake. He ain't right. He's crazy. Grassley's response to that Comey interview right in the hearing room was "EEGADS"! Yeah, "EEGADS", when you realize you have a nut-job in charge of the FBI. And who better than Mueller who's very close to Comey would know that about Comey? Mueller knows, yet he plods on with his phony investigation of "obstruction of justice" for no reason with an investigation he's investigating that had no probable cause or crime to investigate to being with.

Witch Hunt!! People still say Mueller has integrity. No, he doesn't. If he had any integrity, he would have asked for the originating documents day one and on day two resigned saying 1) there is no crime and 2) no probable cause to look for one. Done. If Rosenstein had any integrity, he would have already done that and known there was no basis for a Special Counsel. It's crook on crook on crook. A 3-way crookfest between Comey, Mueller and Rosenstein.

President Trump said what he said. He has a reputation to saying things that aren't true, like saying he didn't say it. But it was part of what he said!

Comey was fired because he's a nut-job incompetent, not because of the Russia probe. The Russia probe like the Clinton email probe, like I guess some other "probes" the FBI is involved in throughout the world, you want competent people "probing", not a nut-job incompetent, leaker, crook crazy person like Jim Comey. You obviously didn't watch the Wednesday hearing. Comey was fired the following Tuesday with no notice.
