My husband has been a warehouse manager for 30 years and was laid off last Aug...It was bilingual a must, bilingual a plus. One job in the city of Industry wanted someone to speak ENGLISH and MANDARIN...Now add that situation to my husband's age of 56 and this explains why he didn't find a job for 6 months....
Go into any store here and it's all Hispanics working. To get job in California, you better know Spanish...
Why isn't there a law on the books that protect us as U.S. citizens against this discrimination...? We're Americans and we shouldn't be penalized because we speak English...
I'm ready for a tea party...What part of illegal don't you understand?

About 10 years ago....living in Santa Clarita Ca...I took the test for a County of Los Angeles job.....I scored 95% on this HARD test.....finally a county job with benefits....YES!!!!!!!!!
Could not get hired because I was not Spanish speaking.....and this was 10 years ago.....
Do you think I am bitter....YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!The difference between an immigrant and an illegal alien is the equivalent of the difference between a burglar and a houseguest. Your stories are what need to be faxed or emailed or called to your Congress persons. It's time they hear from the average, hard-working American citizen who has served this country well. It's time they hear these stories over and over and over again. Until they are sick of hear their phones ring, the faxes burning up and their emails flooded.

All our warehouses here are bi-lingual a must. I can't even begin to tell you how many there are either. Tons!!!! It's for managers, pickers and packers, fork lift drivers....everything. Many of the factories are must speak Spanish as well. Laundry folders....right up and down the line. Thing is this is a diverse area. This is an area where they send alot of refugees and such as well. So it is displacing and limiting a huge number of people, because of this, when so many other languages are spoken. Bi-lingual isn't a plus....Only must speak Spanish because they aren't allowed to put English a must. Funny....the last time I saw an add for Must speak English was for a housecleaning company....like Merry Maids. Now they say must have own vehile with proof of license and insurance..... There's an alcohol rehibilitation place and counselors "must speak Spanish"...they even have daycare workers and such and teachers aids....must speak Spanish. Legal secretaties, receptionists, call centers, insurance companies....heck even McDonalds!!! Now mind you we have had alot of lay-offs that have displaced alot of long time adult workers in their 40's and 50's who are trying to find anything that doesn't require Spanish. They're citizens....and now this, while they are graduating students who still need a translator?

Here is the letter I want to submit. Have I left anything out. Does it sounds threatening or confrontational? Please advise...
To Whom it May Concern,
I came across your ad for the Distribution Supervisor position your company is adverstising on Careerbuilder.com. Would you believe that I met every requirement that you were looking for,(I even have a college degree) except for the requirement the applicant be required to be bilingual(Spanish as the second language).
This is confusing since under Federal Immigration law, one must have a basic understanding of the English language in order to be obtain residency and or US Citizenship. In order to legally obtain employment in this country, one must be a legal resident or be in this country legally and allowed to work. Therefore, I cannot understand as to why one would have to be able to communicate in Spanish for this position, especially since the description did not list communicating or doing business with countries located in Latin America in which Spanish would be necessary.
I would hope that Sara Lee is not attempting to circumvent US Law by hiring labor that may not be authorized to work in this country. Certainly, a resonable person would likely be suspicious of anyone who might produce "right to work" documents while not being able to communicate in the English Language.
I'm sure Sara Lee would never engage in the pratice of hiring illegal aliens when such persons have no legal right to work in this country.I will be conducting further investigation into this matter to ensure the playing field is level at Sara Lee and that all applicants have a fair opportunity to seek employment with your company.
Many of your customers might include American Citizens who have lost jobs or are perhaps, like myself, unemployed and looking for work. Many of these same people may not be too pleased to learn they may not be getting a fair opportunity because a company who is doing business in America is requiring Spanish as a condition of employment.
Best Regards,
