Clearing the decks for the voter identification fight

March 06, 2009

Texas Senate Democratic Caucus consultant Harold Cook points out that three Senate committees have cancelled their meetings next week in anticipation of the voter identification bill fight starting on Tuesday.

Higher Education, Veterans Affairs and the Subcommittee on Flooding and Evacuations have all pulled their meetings off the Senate agenda.

"Regrettably, the Senate Higher Education Committee cannot meet due to the
meeting of the Committee of the Whole to address Voter Identification
legislation," said one committee posting.

All three committees are chaired by Democrats who oppose the voter identification legislation. The subcommittee chair is Sen. Mario Gallegos, D-Houston, who returned to the Senate in 2007 against doctors orders after a liver transplant to block the bill.

The Senate is scheduled to meet as a committe of the whole on Tuesday to take up the voter i.d. bill.
