PHARR — Customs officers arrested a Houston man after they found 38 marijuana packages hidden inside his car's gas tank.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers arrested Juan Luis Hernandez, 28, on federal drug charges Friday at the Pharr-Reynosa International Bridge, according to an agency statement.

Officers referred Hernandez and his 1999 Honda Accord to secondary inspection, where "Jango," a narcotic detector dog, smelled the drugs inside the car's gas tank.

Officers removed the 38 packages of pot, which weighed about 39 pounds.

Pending an appearance before a U.S. magistrate, Hernandez remains in custody.
