Restaurant turns away veterans over dress code

DALLAS—The manager of a Dallas restaurant is apologizing after a hostess turned away six World War II veterans because she said their unit baseball caps, POW T-shirts and shorts didn't meet the restaurant's dress code.

Jay Coberly, a 93-year-old veteran, tells The Dallas Morning News, "We weren't dressed like hobos. We were just dressed comfortably."

The veterans were in town this week for a reunion of survivors of a World War II battle on Oct. 14, 1943 known as "Black Thursday" when they were turned away from Wolfgang Puck's Five Sixty restaurant, located in a rotating dining room atop Reunion Tower.

The restaurant's manager has sent the group two bottles of Scotch, a written apology and an invitation to return to the restaurant.

How sad. I'll bet the hostess was too young to even recognize the fact that they were veterans. A lot of youngsters today seem to be mighty naive.(and I say that politely as I would rather call them something else)

Something happened to me recently like this that just shocked us all. We went to Applebees and after we had sat down I noticed a cousin of mine sitting near by. She and her son came to our table to talk to us, then returned to their table. Not long after that, I got up and went to their table to show them some photos. Within seconds, the manager came up to the table, took me by the arm and said that he needed me to follow him, that he needed to speak to me. He led me off into another area and at that time I couldn't even imagine what it was all about. Then he said "another diner in the restaurant has made the complaint that you are attempting to sell something to the diners at that table". I couldn't even believe what I was hearing. I was so shocked that at that moment I couldn't say much of anything other than no, I was not selling them anything, that they were my cousins and I was merely showing them some photos. My husband was really angry. I can't even dream up why anyone would have thought I was selling a damn thing, it's not like I come close to looking like a homeless Mexican peddling gum...and that IS something we see in restaurants all the time.
Anyway, I'm glad the manager in the Dallas restaurant was quick to apologize to the vets and rectify that situation. I didn't even get an apology. The manager at Applebees, when I stated what had been doing just wiped his brow and said "Whew, I'm glad you said that" and then just walked away.

This is an insult to all veterans IMHO! I called and voiced my displeasure of these veterans' treatment to the woman that answered the phone; however, she stated that she knew nothing about the incident. I could tell that I had been placed on speakerphone right after I stated the subject that I was calling about. What a load of bull!

Where are the fashion police when it comes to fat Mexican women who think they are so glamorous in their skin tight clothes that reveal every inch of fat on their rears and stomachs hanging out? Not to mention their THONGS.
