LOS ANGELES — Los Angeles police say an LAPD detective has been arrested for investigation of grand theft.

An LAPD statement says Ramon Alvarez, a 25-year department veteran, was arrested Friday after a fellow detective reported he spotted Alvarez taking money from a drug bust in Los Angeles.

A search was conducted on Alvarez' vehicle, where a quantity of money was found.

Police Chief Charlie Beck called the arrest disturbing and shocking, but says he is glad a fellow detective reported what appeared to be criminal behavior.

The narcotics detective was booked into the Metropolitan Detention Center and bail was set at $20,000. He was immediately placed on administrative leave.

The detective's union issued a statement saying Alvarez is innocent until proven guilty.
