PHOENIX - Gov. Janet Napolitano is devoting $1.6 million to clean up 60,000 outstanding felony warrants in the state.

The East Valley Tribune reported that the executive order pays for the effort by diverting money from Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio.

Arpaio has criticized the move, saying he uses the money to crack down on illegal immigrants.

Under the governor's directive, the Arizona Department of Public Safety would oversee a multi-agency task force to hunt down felons.

About 42,000 outstanding warrants come from Maricopa County, Arpaio's territory.

The sheriff has been criticized for letting those warrants go unserved while he chased after illegal immigrants.
