This position is based out of Seattle/Tacoma/Olympia and requires travel across WA State and some nationwide travel. This position requires a Bilingual Spanish speaking candidate only. If you don't speak Spanish but want to organize unions on a nationwide level, check out www.afscmeorganizers.org

    AFSCME ORGANIZER IN TRAINING

    ORGANIZER-IN-TRAINING PROGRAM:
The OIT Program is an intensive program that teaches the fundamentals of building worker power through union organizing. Organizers-in-Training come from diverse backgrounds of work, organizing and academic experience.

Organizers-in-Training learn the nuts and bolts of an organizing campaign from talking one-on-one with workers, to developing leaders, and organizing direct actions. Candidates are placed on active campaigns with experienced organizers who provide mentoring and one-on-one training throughout the program. Salary starts at $35, 409 with family health coverage, a car allowance, twelve paid holidays, 401k, pension plan and more.

WHAT DOES A UNION ORGANIZER DO?
Union organizers assist workers in gaining union representation at their worksites. A union organizer educates people (mostly nonunion workers) about their workplace rights, identifies and develops leadership skills among workers, explains the union organizing process and runs a campaign for union recognition. Organizers visit workers one-on-one, in their homes or other places outside the workplace where they feel comfortable, to talk with them about problems they face at work. The organizer builds relationships with workers and challenges and inspires them to get involved with their co-workers to gain a voice at work through organizing a union. An organizer’s ultimate goal is to enable workers to build power in their workplaces by winning a binding agreement with their employer that makes concrete improvements in their working conditions.
WHAT IS THE LIFE OF A UNION ORGANIZER LIKE? The work of a union organizer is challenging and demanding. For the most part, organizers work long, irregular hours and at times, depending on the union and the campaign and can expect to work at least seven days straight. Because workers may work a variety of hours, shifts and settings, it is important organizers make themselves available for meaningful conversations with as many workers as possible during an organizing drive. Also, depending on where the union is focusing its work, organizers can expect to travel extensively and may be away from their homes for months at a time. Although the work is challenging, union organizing is among the most exciting, fulfilling and rewarding careers because organizers are agents of change enabling workers to empower themselves and their communities.

Agreed Phred. Note this position requires the candidate to speak Spanish. And I speculate that "Passion for social and economic justice" at least partially means a belief in mass amnesty for illegal alien workers (as long as they join the union). No matter if this undercuts the wages of citizens.
