PORT ST. LUCIE — The mother of a St. Lucie West Centennial High School student was arrested Thursday after sheriff's investigators accused her of encouraging — and even helping — her daughter in a fight before school.

Witnesses said Roseana M. Scaduto, 31, started "cheering on her daughter by saying, 'kick her (backside)' and 'don't let her hit you like that,'" the arrest affidavit states.

The girl Scaduto's daughter fought Thursday morning in a student parking lot told investigators Scaduto threw her down so Scaduto's daughter could get an advantage.

"She said this occurred twice during the altercation, and both of these times were when she was in what she described as a position of advantage over (Scaduto's daughter)," the report states.

Witnesses said the two girls had scheduled a fist fight, and Scaduto showed up with her daughter. Because Scaduto's daughter wasn't dressed according to the school's code, witnesses said it appeared Scaduto "brought her there for the sole purpose of engaging in a fight."

During a conversation covertly monitored by deputies, Scaduto's husband told his wife she was being accused of encouraging the fight; and she replied, "Well — I did," the affidavit states.

"It's very disturbing to see a parent ... allow their child to be involved in a physical altercation with another child," Sheriff Ken Mascara said in a prepared statement. "It's even more disturbing to find that the parent would allow the altercation to continue once the parent has had the ability to intervene and put a stop to it."

Scaduto, whose occupation is listed as "schoolteacher (private)," faces two counts of child abuse.

She was released Thursday afternoon from the St. Lucie County Jail on $5,000 bail, a jail official said.
