Democrats for McHenry Announced

HICKORY – Today, the McHenry for Congress campaign announced a coalition of 58 10th District Democrats who are supporting Patrick McHenry's reelection to Congress. The group is headed by Mayor Robert Austell of Cherryville. Mayor Austell cited Congressman McHenry's record of putting partisanship aside to vote for the interests of Western North Carolina.

"Patrick McHenry stood up to leaders of his own party to vote against unfair trade deals that weaken our local economy. As a Democrat, I respect Patrick McHenry for putting Western North Carolina first," Mayor Austell said.

Congressman Patrick McHenry was one of 27 Republicans to vote against the Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA). He was one of only 37 Republicans to vote for the expansion of the Trade Adjustment Assistance program, which is providing support and training to workers whose jobs are sent overseas. With unemployment on the rise, Congressman McHenry broke with his party leadership to extend jobless benefits to help workers get back on their feet.

Mayor Rick Murphrey of Kings Mountain pointed to Congressman McHenry's work in bringing the new veterans' health care clinic to the 10th District. A project first proposed 16 year ago to improve the quality of health care for local veterans, Patrick McHenry built bipartisan support in Congress to revive the clinic. The veterans' health care clinic opened on June 4, 2008.

"Patrick McHenry has shown that he will work with any Republican or Democrat who can help him get results for the people he represents. The veterans' clinic is a perfect example of that," said Mayor Murphrey.
