British anarchists led violence in Calais and defaced statue of de Gaulle

British anarchists arrested as migrants stormed Port of Calais

Sources confirm Britons were among 35 arrested during violent demonstration in France, as interior minister pledges new crackdown

British anarchists were among 35 people in police custody in Calais after leading about 350 migrants who broke through police lines and invaded the port, forcing it to close for several hours.

Up to 50 people stormed on board the P&O Spirit of Britain ferry, prompting renewed calls from the mayor of Calais and the head of the port for the demolition of the nearby “Jungle” camp.

Police arrested 35 people including British activists and 26 migrants on Saturday, sources told the Telegraph.

Fifteen in all are still in custody.

The violence sparked after a demonstration over conditions in the shanty town where up to 5,000 migrants are living in tents and makeshift huts while they try to reach Britain.

Masked British agitators from the No Borders group incited migrants to invade the port after the peaceful demonstration, local sources said.

They were photographed on the deck of the ferry.

Nine of those arrested were members of No Borders, the interior minister, Bernard Cazeneuve, said in a statement.

He added the government was “fully determined to maintain public order in Calais, in the face of the migration situation”.

It was unclear how many Britons were arrested because all activists refused to give police their names or nationalities, Gilles Debove of the Calais police union said.

They face various charges including public disorder and trespass.

“I cannot understand why British citizens come to Calais to incite migrants to break the law and defy the French authorities,” Mr Debove said.

Demonstrators also defaced a statue of France’s wartime leader and former president, Charles de Gaulle, daubing it with graffiti which read “**** France”. It was quickly scrubbed off by port officials.

The mayor, Natacha Bouchart, said the “disgraceful” incident highlighted the need to send the army to Calais.

“We’ve been asking for months for the camp to be dismantled,” she said.

“We are living in a state of emergency.

"We don’t know who are among all these people [the migrants]. We don’t know what their intentions are.

"We must review the entire [port's] security system.

"This is a time of extreme tension for the people of Calais and it must end.”

Xavier Bertrand, the president of the French region which covers Calais, said: “The attitude of No Borders in Calais is scandalous – there must be punishment.”

Mr Bertrand added on Twitter: “I demand that the government urgently hold a crisis meeting.”

The head of the Calais port council, Jean-Marc Puissesseau, said the situation in Calais had become intolerable: “It is becoming unmanageable and it is necessary to clear the camp.”

Mrs Bouchart and Mr Puissesseau were expected to join a rally on Sunday afternoon by Calais residents to demand government action to end continual confrontations with migrants at the port.

“This is harming our economy and we demand that the government compensate us,” Mrs Bouchart said.

“It is not an anti-migrant demonstration, the idea is to present a positive image of Calais.”

Mr Cazeneuve, the interior minister, said he would remind EU interior ministers at a meeting in Amsterdam on Monday “of the urgency to implement decisions taken at European level in the face of the migration crisis.”

Charity workers said tension had risen at the Jungle since security was tightened last year, making it much more difficult for migrants to cross the Channel.

Disease and drug use are reported to be spreading in the camp, and several journalists have been threatened or mugged.

In the latest move to seal the Channel Tunnel entrance, the Eurotunnel group and the British and French governments plan to construct a security enclosure to prevent migrants reaching 800 metres of tracks leading up to the tunnel.

French and British taxpayers are to pick up the bill for building the “security tunnel” over the tracks, expected to cost tens of millions of pounds.

The technical details are still being worked out and no date has ben set to start construction.

The project was revealed after massive security upgrades in recent months, including a “moat” around part of the tunnel entrance created by deliberately flooding some land, and new fencing topped with barbed wire.

More than 160 acres have been cleared of trees and shrubs to improve visibility and prevent migrants from hiding before trying to enter the tunnel.

It is understood activists from the No Borders group were detained after being found on the P&O ferry.

The group, which has British members in Calais, has been accused by police of encouraging migrants from the Jungle to riot.

Richard Burnett, chief executive of Britain's Road Haulage Association, called for the French military to be sent in.

"This shocking breach of security clearly shows that the migrant mayhem in and around Calais is not being tackled.

"It is now time for the authorities to acknowledge and meet our demand for the French military be deployed to secure the port and its approaches," he said.

"I am now publicly calling on government to join my call for this decisive action."

Mr Burnett said immediate action was necessary, warning that it is "only a matter of time before our worst fears become a reality and a UK-bound truck driver is killed".
