A 90-year-old survivor of the attack on Pearl Harbor was bumped from a flight to Hawaii where he was headed to be part of an annual remembrance ceremony.

On Wednesday, Walt Shatz went to the United Airlines ticket counter at Los Angeles International Airport to check into his flight to Honolulu. At the time, Shatz was proudly wearing his “Pearl Harbor Survivors” hat. According to Shatz the ticket agent told him, “The government only allows us to weigh so much and we’re overweight. We’ve got to take you off and that’s all there is to it.”
United rebooked him on an American Airlines flight, but he was stuck at LAX for six hours waiting to leave. Shatz was understandably frustrated. “I was very depressed because I didn’t know what to do. They shouldn’t have kicked me off the plane because that was my seat. I paid for it!”
His ordeal went viral and when he finally arrived in Honolulu, about 70 military personnel and their families were there to greet him!
United issued a statement that reads, “Severe weather in the path of United flight 1226 required the flight to carry additional fuel and reduce the number of passengers on board by 41.”
