Marijuana haul found hidden in Cleveland cookie shipment

Marijuana haul found hidden in Cleveland cookie shipment

CLEVELAND - A law enforcement operation known as Operation Green Apple has ended with the seizure of 634 pounds of marijuana that was coming in from Mexico and headed for Cleveland's streets.
The drug bust at an unrevealed location on the west side of Cleveland represents the second $1 million seizure of marijuana in as many weeks due to the combined efforts of local, county and state investigators.

Police say the drug shipment originated in Mexico and was being shipped to Cleveland via McCallen, Texas. The drugs were found hidden in a legitimate shipment of "Chips Ahoy" cookies.

Detectives arrested three men from southern Texas as part of the bust. They are: 34-year-old David Ponce, 33-year-old Abel Avalos of Edinburg, Texas and 40-year-old Ramon Luna of McCallen, Texas. The three are in custody at the Cleveland City Jail and are awaiting formal charges.

Mayor Jackson said, "The fact that these organized crime elements continue to bring narcotics into our area underscores the serious problems we face in protecting our communities. This seizure should serve as a message to those whose goal it is to infect our community that we will continue in our interdiction efforts with the help of our law enforcement partners."

The three month investigation was a cooperative effort involving Cleveland Police, BCI&I, and the Cuyahoga County Sheriff's Office.

On the news, they reported this as Mexican cookies. They didn't say chips ahoy. I didn't know they were made in Mexico. I guess this got past the inspectors once we opened our borders to Mexican truck drivers.
