ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - A 41-year-old Albuquerque woman accused of embezzling Social Security benefits intended for her four children has pleaded guilty to a charge of theft of government property.

Angela Chavez entered her plea last week before U.S. Magistrate Alan Torgerson.

No sentencing date has been set.

An indictment filed last October charged Chavez with four counts each of Social Security fraud and theft of government property.

The fraud counts alleged she misappropriated Social Security child survivor benefits intended for her children.

The theft counts alleged she embezzled more than $24,000 intended for the children, who were not living with her.

However, the U.S. attorney's office says Chavez admitted in a plea agreement that she embezzled Social Security benefits worth nearly $33,000 from January 2001 through March 2010.
