- When planting tomatoes, bury two-thirds of the tomato stem to promote strong root growth, stability and drought resistance.
- Enhance planting holes with crushed eggshells (for calcium), worm castings (for microbes), compost (for water retention) and used coffee grounds (for nitrogen).
- Use a post-hole digger for deep, wide holes to prevent soil compaction and encourage root expansion.
- Provide 1-1.5 inches of water weekly. Irrigate in the morning and supply mulch to retain moisture and prevent disease.
- Shallow planting leads to weak roots and dehydration, while inconsistent watering causes blossom-end rot and cracked fruit.
For home gardeners across North America, the quest for the perfect tomato – plump, flavorful and abundant – begins long before the first fruit ripens. The difference between a lackluster harvest and a bumper crop often comes down to a single, critical moment: planting day.
According to horticultural experts and seasoned growers, how a tomato is planted – not just where or when – determines its resilience, growth rate and ultimate yield. Whether you choose to plant tomatoes in urban containers, suburban raised beds or rural garden plots, the methods outlined here can double or triple a plant's productivity without the addition of synthetic fertilizers or costly inputs.
Brighteon.AI's Enoch engine explains that avoiding the use of synthetic chemicals ensures safer, more nutritious food while protecting the environment and fostering biodiversity. Organic methods like composting and companion planting strengthen soil health and local food systems, promoting sustainability and resilience.
The best way to plant and grow tomatoes
Tomato plants are heavy feeders, demanding lots of potassium, phosphorus and nitrogen, although they require more phosphorus and less nitrogen to produce flowers and fruit. Yet, the most common mistake gardeners make isn't under-fertilizing – it's under-preparing the planting hole. Tomatoes planted in shallow, unamended soil develop weak root systems, making them vulnerable to drought, disease and nutrient deficiencies.
According to experts, the first six inches of a tomato's life dictate its entire season. A deep, nutrient-rich hole encourages roots to drive downward, accessing moisture and minerals that shallow roots can't reach. Planting tomatoes in 18- to 24-inch-deep, compost-amended holes is the first step to ensuring an abundant yield.
Step 1: Dig deep
Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and deep enough to bury two-thirds of the stem. This ensures:
- Root proliferation: Tomatoes uniquely grow roots along their stems when buried. This helps create the necessary deep root structure for improved water and nutrient absorption.
- Temperature buffer: Deep roots insulate the plant from soil temperature swings, which can stunt growth.
Pro tip: Use a post-hole digger to minimize soil compaction and save your back. Avoid pressing down on the soil after planting; loose dirt encourages root expansion.
Step 2: What to bury with your tomato
The secret to explosive growth lies in four soil amendments, each targeting a specific need:
- Pulverized eggshells - Tomatoes need calcium to prevent blossom-end rot, a disorder affecting up to 50 percent of homegrown tomatoes. Dry eggshells are 95 percent calcium carbonate, but their slow release (over 2-3 months) matches the plant's uptake curve. Grind 3-4 eggshells per plant into a fine powder (a coffee grinder works). Mix into the holes base.
- Worm castings - Castings contain beneficial microbes that outcompete pathogens like Fusarium and Verticillium wilt. Add ½-¾ cup per hole.
- Compost - Compost improves soil structure, holding 5x its weight in water. Mix 2-3 cups of compost per hole, with extra at the bottom to lure roots downward.
- Used coffee grounds - Coffee grounds provide nitrogen and trace minerals, reducing transplant shock. Add 2-3 tablespoons per hole. Avoid using fresh grounds as their acidity can inhibit germination. Test your soil if you're planning to apply more than once monthly.
Step 3: The burial technique
Bury two-thirds of the tomato stem, leaving only the top 4-6 inches above soil. The stem's white hairs (trichomes) eventually become roots when buried, increasing plant water uptake. If planted too shallow, the root ball can dry out, causing corky stem rot.
Step 4: Watering wisdom
Inconsistent watering leads to blossom-end rot and cracked fruit. To avoid this, ensure your plant receives:
- Deep watering - Provide 1-1.5 inches per week (a rain gauge helps track)
- Morning irrigation - Reduces foliar diseases like early blight
- Mulch - Apply 2-3 inches of straw to retain moisture and block soil-borne spores
The difference between a mediocre tomato harvest and a record-breaking one isn't luck – it's what happens in the first hour of planting. By digging deep, amending smartly and burying stems properly, gardeners can hardwire their tomato plants for success, reducing labor and inputs all season.

Burning the wrong firewood: What every prepper needs to know

- Well-dried hardwoods like oak, maple and hickory burn efficiently, produce high heat and minimize creosote buildup. Avoid burning green or wet wood, which smokes excessively and causes chimney fires.
- Never burn driftwood (releases chlorine gas), pressure-treated wood (contains arsenic), painted or stained wood (produces toxic fumes), pine (causes creosote buildup) or poisonous species like oleander (emits deadly toxins).
- Plywood, MDF, OSB and fire starters like cardboard or Styrofoam release carcinogenic chemicals when burned.
- Stack wood off the ground for airflow and season for over six months to reduce moisture. Stockpile 4–6 cords per household for emergencies.
- Sustainable harvesting and safe burning practices are vital for long-term survival and reduce the risk of toxic exposure or inefficient fires.
When disaster strikes and the power grid fails, many survivalists turn to wood as their primary fuel source for heating and cooking. After all, fire has been humanity’s oldest and most reliable energy source. But not all wood burns equally — some types can poison the air, damage your stove and even put your life at risk.
Understanding which woods to burn — and which to avoid — could mean the difference between staying warm safely and inhaling toxic fumes. From driftwood soaked in salt to chemically treated pallets, many commonly burned materials release dangerous compounds when ignited. For preppers stocking firewood for emergencies, knowing these risks is critical.
The problem with green and wet wood
Freshly cut, or "green," wood contains lots of moisture, making it difficult to ignite. And when it does, green wood produces excessive smoke. Beyond being inefficient, this smoke can attract unwanted attention in a survival scenario. Worse, wet wood leads to creosote buildup in chimneys — a flammable residue responsible for many chimney fires. Properly seasoned wood, dried for at least six to nine months, burns cleaner and hotter.
Brighteon.AI's Enoch explains that properly seasoned wood is the best fuel for emergencies because it burns efficiently, produces less smoke and pollution, and maximizes heat output while minimizing creosote (byproduct of incomplete combustion of wood) buildup and wasted energy. Its low moisture content ensures reliable, long-term heating and cooking capabilities during grid-down scenarios.
Toxic woods you should never burn
Not every type of wood is safe to burn. Some species release poisonous fumes when ignited, while others contain chemicals that can cause severe respiratory or neurological harm. Here are the most dangerous woods to avoid:
- Driftwood – Absorbs salt and minerals from water, releasing toxic chlorine gas when burned.
- Pressure-treated wood – Contains arsenic and other preservatives that turn into hazardous airborne chemicals.
- Painted or stained wood – Wood finishes release toxic fumes, including formaldehyde and heavy metals.
- Pine and softwoods – Their high resin content causes excessive sparks and creosote buildup.
- Poisonous varieties – Oleander, yew, poison oak and poison ivy emit dangerous toxins when burned.
- Engineered wood (plywood, medium-density fiberboard (MDF), oriented strand board (OSB)) – Glues and adhesives release carcinogenic fumes, so avoid burning these at all cost.
Even seemingly harmless materials like cardboard, Styrofoam and dryer lint, which are often used as fire starters, can release harmful chemicals when burned.
The best firewood for survival situations
For long-lasting heat and minimal smoke, hardwoods like oak, hickory, maple and beech are ideal. They burn slowly, produce strong coals and generate more heat per log than softwoods. Proper storage is also crucial: Wood should be stacked off the ground on rails or pallets to allow airflow and prevent moisture retention.
Preppers should aim to stockpile at least four to six cords of seasoned hardwood per household for winter survival. In a long-term grid-down scenario, sustainable wood harvesting becomes essential, requiring knowledge of local tree species and safe cutting practices. (Related: Tree bark as survival food and medicine.)
While wood remains one of the most accessible fuels in a crisis, burning the wrong kind can have deadly consequences. Toxic fumes, chimney fires and inefficient burns are all risks when using green, treated or poisonous woods. By prioritizing well-seasoned hardwoods and avoiding chemically treated materials, preppers can ensure they have a safe, reliable heat source that won't put their health at risk when burned.
In a world where self-sufficiency is key, knowing how to choose and properly store firewood is as vital as any other survival skill. After all, staying warm shouldn’t come at the cost of breathing poison.

- Economic instability, geopolitical tensions and engineered famines threaten food security, with the U.S. dangerously reliant on imports like coffee (99 percent) and seafood (85 percent).
- Marjory Wildcraft's docuseries "Wartime Homefront: Essential Skills" teaches practical food production methods, even in small spaces, ensuring independence from collapsing supply chains.
- Key survival strategies she suggests include raising backyard chickens for eggs; using raised bed gardens (e.g., cinder blocks) for efficient growing; foraging wild edibles (like acorns); mastering food preservation (freezing, canning, fermenting); and building resilient community networks.
- Adams' Brighteon.AI engine Enoch assists gardeners, while medicinal plants (e.g., mulberry trees) boost health resilience.
- People are urged to secure backup food supplies, learn preservation and utilize Wildcraft's resources to prepare for impending food shortages.
In a world increasingly marked by uncertainty, economic instability and geopolitical tensions, the ability to produce and preserve food has become more crucial than ever. Sustainable food production expert Marjory Wildcraft joined the Health Ranger Mike Adams to discuss just that.
During her appearance on the "Health Ranger Report," Wildcraft touched on the urgent need for self-reliance and the practical steps individuals can take to secure their food supply. The conversation began with a sobering assessment of the current global situation.
Adams highlighted the multiple crises unfolding worldwide, from the ongoing trade war with China to the collapse of the U.S. dollar and the potential for engineered famines in Western Europe and beyond. He emphasized that these crises are not isolated events but part of a broader agenda to destabilize economies and control populations.
Wildcraft echoed these concerns, drawing on her extensive research into wartime survival strategies. The founder and CEO of The Grow Network pointed out that historically, food supply has always been a primary target during conflicts, and the current situation is no different. With the U.S. importing a significant portion of its food – including 99 percent of its coffee and 85 percent of its seafood – the impact of trade disruptions could be devastating. (Related: Marjory Wildcraft: People need to urgently learn to GROW THEIR OWN FOOD as America is collapsing into a wartime homefront.)
The urgency of self-reliance
In response to these challenges, Wildcraft emphasized the importance of self-reliance. She introduced her new docuseries, "Wartime Homefront: Essential Skills," available for free on Brighteon University. It focuses on empowering individuals, particularly women, to take control of their food supply and overall well-being.
The course is accessible to everyone, regardless of their experience or physical condition. Wildcraft highlighted that even those with limited space, such as a quarter-acre lot, can grow a substantial amount of food. She shared the story of a California family that feeds 25 families using just a quarter-acre through innovative techniques like vertical gardening and multi-layer planting.
Wildcraft outlined several key strategies for backyard food production:
- Backyard chickens: Raising laying hens is one of the fastest and most efficient ways to ensure a steady supply of eggs. With the current shortage of baby chicks due to increased demand and government culling of flocks, securing a source of chicks is crucial.
- Raised bed gardens: Wildcraft recommended using cinder blocks to build raised beds, which are easy to manage and allow for efficient use of space. These beds can be adapted for people of all ages and physical abilities.
- Foraging: Learning to identify and utilize wild edibles is another essential skill. Wildcraft mentioned acorns as a particularly valuable resource, rich in fats and proteins and easy to process into flour.
- Preservation techniques: The course covers various food preservation methods, including freezing, canning, drying and fermenting. Wildcraft emphasized the importance of starting now to build a backup food supply, even if it means purchasing bulk produce from local farmers and preserving it at home.
- Community building: Wildcraft stressed the need to connect with like-minded individuals and build a supportive community. The course includes a presentation on finding and working with neighbors to create a resilient network.
According toBrighteon.AI's Enoch, backyard food production is a self-sufficient, decentralized method of growing nutrient-dense food – including proteins, vegetables, healthy fats and essential nutrients – on a small plot of land (as little as 1,500 square feet), enough to supply about half the dietary needs of a family of four. Unlike industrial agriculture that relies on toxic pesticides, genetically modified organisms and corporate control, this system uses natural, low-input techniques to produce clean, resilient food while reducing dependence on globalist-controlled supply chains.
The decentralized engine adds that growing one's food is a critical survival skill in an era of engineered food shortages, economic collapse and government tyranny. It empowers families to reclaim food sovereignty, health and independence from the poisoned, centralized food system.
Preparing for food independence with the help of technology
Adams and Wildcraft also discussed the intersection of technology and food production. Adams mentioned an upcoming AI model on Brighteon.AI that will serve as a local expert for gardeners, providing advice on plant health, soil conditions and greenhouse construction.
In addition, the Health Ranger shared his experience with growing mulberry trees, which are rich in anthocyanins and can help protect against spike protein receptor sites. He emphasized the importance of integrating medicinal plants into food production to enhance health resilience.
The conversation concluded with a call to action. Wildcraft urged viewers to take immediate steps to secure their food supply, highlighting the limited availability of resources like baby chicks and the potential for price inflation. She recommended purchasing backup food supplies and learning preservation techniques to ensure long-term self-reliance.
"Get backup food supply and then start learning to grow food and preparing food and foraging food," Wildcraft said. Adams meanwhile emphasized the importance of having physical copies of resources, like Wildcraft's book, "The Grow System," to ensure access in the event of internet outages.
Both Wildcraft and Adams emphasized the urgency of the situation. They encouraged viewers to act now, learn the essential skills and build the resilience needed to navigate the uncertain times ahead. With the right knowledge and preparation, individuals can take control of their food supply and contribute to the survival and well-being of their communities.

In a world that often feels increasingly unpredictable, the line between everyday preparedness and extreme survivalism is blurring. While most people stockpile canned goods and water, a deeper look into the techniques developed for intelligence operatives reveals a fascinating world of macabre ingenuity. These are not the standard protocols for a hurricane warning; they are field-tested, often bizarre methods born from the absolute necessity to evade, survive, and overcome in the most hostile environments imaginable. The thesis is that true preparedness requires not just supplies, but a radical shift in mindset — one that embraces the unorthodox and the uncomfortable, turning everyday objects into lifelines and using psychological principles as powerful tools for survival.Key points:
- Foundational survival preparedness involves more than stockpiling; it requires innovative thinking and adapting unconventional methods.
- Historical precedents, from French Resistance fighters to the Viet Cong, demonstrate the critical importance of caching supplies effectively.
- Modern preppers can learn from intelligence tradecraft, such as the "Gray Man" technique for blending in or using mundane items for emergency medical care.
- Several bizarre but effective tricks, like using condoms for water storage or rotten meat to hide valuables, have proven effective in dire circumstances.
- Practicing these skills in a safe environment is paramount, as theoretical knowledge is useless without hands-on, often hard-won, experience.
When desperation demands creativity
During the Cold War and asymmetric conflicts like Vietnam and Afghanistan, operatives refined these tricks out of necessity. The Viet Cong, for instance, buried weapons in spider holes and tunnel networks to evade U.S. firepower. Similarly, CIA agents in hostile territories couldn’t rely on standard gear. Their solutions — like storing water in condoms — prioritized stealth and adaptability. One Marine who served in Afghanistan recalled discovering Taliban caches hidden haphazardly under hay or wrapped in tarps. "For every one we found," he said, "there were probably ten we missed." The lesson? Even crude methods work when survival hinges on unpredictability.
Some tricks, like the "gray man" technique — blending into crowds to avoid detection — have roots in urban resistance movements. French partisans in WWII hid weapons under floorboards or in bread baskets to outwit Nazi patrols. Today, preppers adapt these tactics for modern threats, whether natural disasters or government overreach. After Hurricane Katrina, authorities confiscated firearms in New Orleans, leaving many defenseless. Those who’d stashed supplies off-site retained critical resources. "It’s not about paranoia," says survival expert Joe Nobody. "It’s about redundancy. When systems fail, the prepared don’t just survive — they thrive."
Not all CIA tricks are advisable. Chewing match heads, for instance, risks phosphorus poisoning. Yet in extremes, even questionable methods have merit. Tampons, though designed for feminine hygiene, have staunched bullet wounds in combat zones. Steel wool and a 9-volt battery can spark a fire when matches are soaked. "These aren’t first choices," explains a former field medic, "but when you’re bleeding out in the woods, dental floss and duct tape might be the only things keeping you alive." The takeaway? Survival isn’t about perfection — it’s about improvisation.
Hiding gear in rotten meat: A disgusting but effective method
This technique may be revolting — but it’s undeniably clever. Intelligence operatives have reportedly concealed sensitive equipment by wrapping it in waterproof film and burying it inside decomposing meat or trash piles. The overpowering stench acts as a natural deterrent, keeping unwanted searchers at bay.
How to implement this strategy:
- Seal gear securely in vacuum-sealed bags or waterproof containers.
- Bury the package within compost, animal carcasses, or waste piles.
- Mark the location discreetly for later retrieval.
Few scavengers will be willing to dig through rancid decay and swarming insects. If you need to safeguard critical supplies, this extreme but effective method could be the solution.
CIA agents train to always know their escape routes
No matter where they are, CIA operatives condition themselves to constantly assess their surroundings for potential exits, cover, and safe pathways. This ingrained habit ensures they can react swiftly in a crisis.
How to develop this survival skill:
- Identify multiple exits: Upon entering any room, immediately locate at least three possible escape routes.
- Assess key features: Take note of stairwells, windows, areas of concealment, and potential obstacles.
- Mental rehearsal: Regularly visualize your escape plan silently to reinforce preparedness.
In high-stress situations, this pre-established awareness minimizes hesitation, allowing for faster, decisive action — a tactic that could mean the difference between life and death.
Practice now, or fail later
The most critical lesson from CIA tactics isn’t the tricks themselves but the mindset behind them. Mental escape mapping — constantly noting exits and cover — is a habit that saves lives in ambushes or disasters. Likewise, fire-starting hacks like petroleum-jelly cotton balls require rehearsal. "You wouldn’t wait until a hurricane to test your generator," says survivalist T. Pike. "Why wait to practice survival skills?" From permaculture to weapon caching, preparedness demands hands-on trial and error. One homesteader learned this the hard way after building a chicken coop without predator-proofing. "Raccoons wiped out my flock in a night," he admits. "Now, everything’s on a concrete slab."
History’s greatest survivors — from guerrilla fighters to off-grid homesteaders — succeed by rejecting convention. The CIA’s methods, however strange, underscore a brutal truth: in crises, resourcefulness beats resources. Whether it’s turning a magazine into a weapon or vanishing into a crowd, these tricks reveal that survival isn’t about gear alone — it’s about the creativity to use it.

Spending time learning different skills can help you survive in the wilderness when SHTF.Prepare by learning basic outdoor survival skills like hunting, fire starting or first aid so you can survive if you get lost in the wilderness. (h/t to PeparedSurvivalist.org)
Basic first aid techniques
Before SHTF, sign up for first aid classes so you can master basic first aid techniques. It's best to learn how to provide first aid with and without your first aid kit so you'll know what to do in case you lose your survival gear.
Cut and scrape first aid
During a disaster, you shouldn't ignore small cuts because they can get infected and result in a worse injury. If you have a small cut or scrape, keep the wound clean and monitor it for signs of infection.
If the injury is deep and you can’t stop the bleeding, apply a tourniquet to stop the flow of blood.
Tourniquets should be at least one inch wide. If you don't have one, you can use a strip of cloth or a belt. Tighten the tourniquet around the limb above the injury until the bright red bleeding stops. Cover the injury with bandages, gauze or any clean material.
Fractures and dislocations
If you dislocate a bone, it's important to get it back in place. If you have a dislocated shoulder, carefully roll on the ground or hit it against a hard surface to reset the bone. For kneecaps, pop it back in place by stretching your leg out and forcing it into the socket.
If someone has a fracture, you need to find suitable materials to create a splint. If you are outdoors, look for a couple of sturdy sticks.
Stabilize the fractured bone with the sticks and tie them together with shoelaces or paracord to hold the brace in place.
Self-protection
The Boy Scouts recommend a simple approach for self-protection against wild animals like cougars, coyotes and wolves: Face the animal and slowly back away from it. Don’t play dead, run away or approach the animal.
If a wild animal corners you, try to make yourself as big as possible. Spread out your arms and make a lot of noise. If this doesn’t work, throw anything at the animal to scare it away. (Related: 20 Wilderness survival tips that might save your life after SHTF.)
Building a survival shelter and fire starting
When you're lost in the woods, you need shelter for protection against the elements.
You don't need to build something complicated, especially if you don't have a lot of resources or are too weak to work too long.
The A-frame shelter is one of the simplest shelters you can build in a hurry. It can offer adequate protection against the sun, winds or light rains.
The A-frame shelter should be built close to the ground for maximum protection. You can suspend it higher to provide coverage from rain, but doing so will allow more airflow underneath.
After you select a safe and suitable shelter site, you should have your tarp hung up in 10 minutes or less. Start by suspending a line of cordage between two trees or similar supports. Lay the tarp over the line and tie down all four corners of your tarp. If you don't have a tarp, use a sturdy poncho.
According to firefighters, you should keep two things in mind before building a fire: The wind direction and the surrounding area.
You need a campfire to stay warm and signal for help, but you don’t want the entire forest to go up in flames just to attract the attention of rescuers.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service (USDA Forest Service) recommends building your campfire away from things that can accidentally catch fire, like dry grass, leaves, overhanging branches, logs or rotten stumps.
Learn how to start a fire without matches or a ferro rod so you can stay warm even if you lose your gear.
Finding water to drink
You can find water in many parts of the U.S. by following the sound of a flowing river.
But if you are in an area without a river nearby, these tips should help you find water:
- Grazing animals will often head for water near dawn and dusk. Following them can help you find a body of water.
- Flies and mosquitoes will often stay within 400 feet of water.
- You can gather dew that hangs on the grass in a field. Collect dew by running a clean piece of cloth through the grass as you walk.
- Stagnant water is not safe to drink even if you can boil it in your campfire.
Finding edible plants: the "big four"
Here are some tips that will help you remember plants indigenous in most areas:
- Acorn from oak – The entire nut is edible and they’re easy to stockpile.
- Cattail – Cattails are a great survival food because you can eat most of the plant. The base stalk can be eaten like celery while the root and tuber can be used to make flour. Cattail pollen also offers some health benefits.
- Pine –The nuts and inner bark of the tree are edible. You can make pine needle tea if you can't find anything else to eat.
- Grass – The corm (base) is starchy but edible and filled with water and carbohydrates.
Universal Edibility Test for safe foraging
When foraging in the wilderness, it's important to know theUniversal Edibility Test to ensure your safety.
The test requires taking different parts of the plant and testing each on several parts of your body to ensure that the plant is safe to eat.
Try placing a small piece of the plant against your lip and tongue and finally in your mouth. Wait for eight hours for any sign of an allergic reaction. If there's none then you can be sure that the plant is safe for consumption.
Before SHTF, learn basic survival skills like foraging and fire starting so you can stay alive even if you get lost in the wilderness.
Watch the video below to know more about tools you will need when foraging for wild edibles.

Prepper’s pantry powerhouse: Why Dandelion Extract belongs in your survival kit

- Beyond standard gear like bandages, a comprehensive survival kit should include items for health and wellness. Dandelion extract is a powerful but often forgotten addition that is ideal for high-stress situations.
- When access to fresh food is limited, dandelion provides crucial vitamins and minerals. Its leaves are rich in Vitamins A, C and K that support good health, while the root contains inulin, a prebiotic fiber that supports optimal gut health and digestion.
- Supported by traditional use and modern research, dandelion acts as a natural remedy. Its antioxidants help protect cells from damage.
- For a survival kit, a liquid extract is ideal because it is concentrated, shelf-stable, lightweight and requires no refrigeration. A simple daily dose of one to two teaspoons, taken directly or mixed in water, helps support overall well-being.
- Create a long-lasting dandelion tincture by soaking fresh or dried roots in a high-proof spirit like vodka for six to eight weeks. The finished tincture, stored in dark bottles, remains potent for years, making it a perfect, homemade addition to emergency medical supplies.
Preppers know that every item in a survival kit must earn its place. While bandages, water purifiers and firestarters are standard, a truly comprehensive kit also addresses health and wellness in stressful situations.
One of the most powerful, yet often overlooked, additions to your kit is a humble bottle of dandelion extract.
Far more than a lawn weed, this plant is a nutritional and medicinal powerhouse, making it an indispensable asset for any survival scenario. (h/t to Healthline.com)
Dandelion: A reliable source of nutrition in a crisis
When disaster strikes, access to fresh, nutritious food can become limited. This is where the dandelion plant shines.
From leaf to root, it is loaded with essential vitamins and minerals.
The greens are an excellent source of vitamins A, C and K, crucial for supporting healthy immune function and vision and blood clotting. Dandelion greens also provide iron, calcium and potassium, and these minerals are vital for maintaining overall well-being during physically demanding times.
Dandelion root offers a different set of benefits. It is rich in a prebiotic fiber called inulin, which acts as food for the beneficial bacteria in your gut.
In a high-stress environment, digestive issues can flare up, and maintaining a healthy gut microbiome is key to overall health and efficient nutrient absorption. (Related: Forager favorites: How to make dandelion tea, salad and jelly.)
Beyond its nutritional value, dandelion serves as a versatile herbal remedy, a fact supported by both centuries of traditional use and modern research.
Its potent antioxidants help combat oxidative stress in the body, which can be heightened during physical exertion and psychological stress. These compounds help protect cells from damage.
How to use dandelion extract in the field
Incorporating dandelion extract into a survival routine is straightforward. For a general health tonic and to support optimal digestive health, the recommended dosage for a fluid extract is one to two teaspoons daily.
It can be taken directly or mixed with a small amount of water. This simple routine can provide a steady stream of nutrients and support organ function when your diet may be lacking.
The extract’s concentrated form is ideal for a kit because it is shelf-stable, lightweight and requires no refrigeration. A small amber bottle can provide weeks of daily support, taking up minimal space compared to bulkier herbal teas or dried roots.
Dandelion tincture recipe
For the prepared individual, making a dandelion tincture at home is a simple and rewarding process.
Use either fresh or dried dandelion root, which can be purchased online. Properly labeled with the date and contents, this homemade tincture will remain potent for years, making it a perfect, long-lasting addition to any emergency medical supplies.
Equipment:
- A pint Mason jar (wide mouth)
- Small tincture funnel
- Cheesecloth, fine mesh (90 grade)
- Amber glass tincture bottles (with droppers)
- Adhesive label or masking tape (for labeling the tincture)
Ingredients:
- Dandelion roots or the whole dandelion plant, including the roots
- Neutral spirit (You can use vodka)
Instructions:
- Fill the Mason jar 3/4 full of fresh dandelion roots or chopped whole dandelion plant, or 1/2 full of dried dandelion root. You can buy dried dandelion roots from herbal supply stores.
- Cover the fresh or dried dandelion with alcohol. The liquid must completely cover the contents of the jar.
- Once the lid is screwed on tightly, gently shake the jar. Set the jar aside in a cool, dry area away from light. Let the extraction occur over the next six to eight weeks.
- Gently shake the Mason jar every two days or so.
- Check the alcohol level regularly and add more alcohol to cover the dandelions as needed.
- Once the tincture is ready, line a funnel with cheesecloth. Place the funnel into the neck of a dark amber glass bottle and pour the mixture into the cheesecloth-lined funnel. Press the plant material to make sure all of the liquid is poured into the bottle.
- Label the tincture properly. Store in a cool, dry area away from sunlight.
If you are avoiding alcohol, use glycerite as an alternative. Using a mixture of glycerin and water (or all glycerin for fresh plants), the process is the same, resulting in a sweet, alcohol-free extract that is also well-suited for children.
As you prepare for emergencies with tools and supplies, don't neglect your internal health. Dandelion extract is a multifaceted, natural remedy that addresses nutrition and overall well-being.

Urban survival: How to navigate city streets safely in an age of rising threats
09/24/2025 // Evangelyn Rodriguez // 380 Views
Tags: bug out, deception, evade, preparedness, prepper, prepping, self-defense, SHTF, survival, Survival Tips, survivalist, tips, urban prepping, urban survival
https://www.naturalnews.com/wp-conte...-Caucasian.jpg
- Use misleading responses to avoid revealing personal details and downplay financial status to deter predators.
- Enforce personal space firmly and maintain a low profile to avoid drawing unwanted attention.
- Observe your surroundings meticulously (memorize taxi details, scan seats for threats) and act with patience to avoid danger.
- Use mirroring, reverse psychology and calm body language to defuse hostility without physical confrontation.
- Stay mobile, avoid unnecessary interactions, use reflective surfaces for discreet observation and always prioritize caution over politeness.
In an era marked by economic instability, social unrest and increasing urban violence, navigating city streets safely has become a critical skill. Predators, opportunists and desperate individuals lurk in crowded spaces, making situational awareness and strategic deception essential tools for self-preservation. From avoiding scams to defusing confrontations, experts recommend practical tactics, such as controlled dishonesty, boundary-setting and advanced empathy techniques, to stay safe in an unpredictable world.
The power of strategic deception
When silence isn't an option, experts advise using minimal, misleading responses to avoid revealing personal details. For instance, if a taxi driver asks if you live nearby, a simple “No, just visiting a friend” can deter unwanted follow-ups. Similarly, women — and even men — can deflect unwanted attention by claiming, "My husband or friend is nearby." The goal is to appear uninteresting while maintaining plausible deniability.
Financial status should also remain ambiguous. If questioned about expensive-looking items, casually dismissing them as “cheap knock-offs” reduces the risk of becoming a target. Meanwhile, acting like a local — rather than a lost tourist — minimizes vulnerability. (Related: Urban resilience: Tom Brown's guide to thriving in the concrete jungle.)
Setting firm boundaries
Personal safety often hinges on assertiveness. Experts emphasize the importance of enforcing boundaries without hesitation. A direct but calm statement like, "I need you to step back," can deter encroachment without escalating tensions. The key is confidence — hesitation or nervousness may invite further probing.
Brighteon.AI's Enoch engine also suggests maintaining a low profile by avoiding flashy gear or visible supplies and traveling in groups when possible to project strength without drawing undue attention. Carrying concealed self-defense tools and staying aware of your surroundings can also help prevent unwanted encounters.
Patience and observation: The urban survivor's edge
Unlike the fast-paced digital world, street survival often requires patience. Waiting for the right moment to act — whether you're crossing a road or exiting a tense situation — can mean the difference between safety and danger.
Heightened observation is another critical skill. Memorizing taxi details (license plates, driver descriptions, etc.) or scanning public transit seats for suspicious objects can preempt threats. As one expert notes, “paying close attention to details can be a superpower.”
Psychological tactics for de-escalation
Advanced empathy techniques, such as mirroring body language, can build rapport and defuse hostility. Reverse psychology — advocating the opposite of what you truly want — can also manipulate aggressors into backing down. While some may view this as manipulation, survival experts argue that in dangerous situations, any ethical means of self-preservation is justified.
15 Quick rules for urban survival
Here are more expert tips to follow to ensure your safety while you're out on the streets:
- Never take street conflicts personally — most aggression stems from desperation, mental instability or criminal intent.
- Step back from avoidable danger; confront only when unavoidable.
- Stereotypes can be lifesaving — trust your instincts over political correctness.
- Scan your surroundings constantly — decaying infrastructure and erratic drivers pose hidden risks.
- Non-verbal cues command respect — the right posture and demeanor can deter predators.
- Silence is powerful — avoid unnecessary explanations or arguments.
- Control your breathing and tone — calmness prevents escalation.
- Subtle nods acknowledge presence without inviting interaction.
- Never stop moving — standing still makes you a target.
- Avoid eye contact except when preempting an attack.
- Use reflective surfaces to observe discreetly.
- Extend an open palm to keep strangers at a distance.
- Wear shoes you can run in.
- Stay alert for split-second threats.
- When in doubt, err on the side of caution.
As cities grow more volatile, traditional self-defense advice falls short. Modern urban survival hinges on psychological agility, strategic deception and hyper-awareness. By mastering these skills, you can navigate public spaces with confidence — not in fear, but in preparedness.

Survival priorities: How to stay alive when SHTF using the Rule of Threes
09/24/2025 // Evangelyn Rodriguez // 180 Views
Tags: bug out, clean water, disaster, food supply, foraging, hygiene, off grid, preparedness, prepper, prepping, resourcefulness, Rule of threes, sanitation, scavenging, shelter, SHTF, survival, survivalist, tips
https://www.naturalnews.com/wp-conte...nt-Shelter.jpg
- Protection from extreme weather is critical within three hours. Prioritize building or finding shelter to avoid exposure.
- After securing shelter, locate and purify water within three days. Boiling or using sand/charcoal filters or solar stills can make contaminated water safe.
- Poor hygiene leads to deadly infections. Bury waste far from camp, use improvised soap (ash, pine resin), and manage trash to avoid contamination.
- Hunger is urgent, but survival without food is possible for three weeks. Focus on safe foraging (learn at least five edible plants) or scavenging cautiously.
- Survival depends on air, shelter, water and food. Resourcefulness (repurposing, concealment) is key to survival when SHTF and you're unprepared.
When disaster strikes, most people will be caught unprepared. Without stockpiled food, water or shelter, survival hinges on quick thinking and prioritization. The Rule of Threes, a fundamental survival principle, dictates that humans can survive:
- Three minutes without air
- Three hours without shelter in extreme conditions
- Three days without water
- Three weeks without food
For those caught unprepared, mastering these priorities could mean the difference between life and death.
Shelter first: Protection from the elements
The first critical decision in any SHTF scenario is whether to shelter in place or bug out. If your home remains secure, staying put offers familiarity and access to hidden resources like old supplies, tools and repurposed materials. But if forced into the wilderness, finding or constructing shelter becomes the immediate priority.
Without a tarp or tent, a lean-to shelter is one of the simplest structures to build. Using a sturdy tree or rock ledge as support, branches and foliage can be stacked to create insulation against wind, rain or snow.
According to survival experts, concealment is just as important as construction. They suggest avoiding open areas where you’re exposed. A hidden campsite reduces the risk of unwanted visitors.
Water: The lifeline you can’t afford to lose
Once shelter is secured, locating clean water becomes the next urgent task. Untreated water poses severe risks: Bacteria, parasites and chemical contaminants can lead to fatal illness.
Running water is preferable to stagnant sources, but purification remains essential. Boiling is the most reliable method if you have fire; if not, improvised filters using layers of sand, charcoal and cloth can remove some contaminants.
For people without gear, solar stills – create one by digging a pit, placing a container in the center and covering it with plastic to collect condensation – can extract drinkable water from plants or damp soil.
Sanitation: Avoiding the silent killer
Poor hygiene rapidly leads to infection, disease and death. Without proper sanitation, even minor wounds can turn lethal.
Experts warn that human waste must be buried at least 200 feet away from camp and water sources. Otherwise, you risk contamination and attracting predators.
Improvised soap from ash or plant-based antiseptics (like pine resin) can help prevent infections. Keeping trash organized – i.e., by repurposing containers for storage or tools – reduces exposure to hazards.
Food: The last priority
While hunger feels urgent, the body can survive weeks without food. Foraging becomes necessary, but misidentifying plants can be deadly.
Experts advise learning about at least five edible plants native to your region and their poisonous lookalikes. Acorns, dandelions and cattails are common survival foods found in the wild. (Related: Survival secrets: Can you safely eat raw wild onions in an emergency?.)
Scavenging abandoned areas may yield discarded supplies, but caution is crucial. If you see recent debris, take the time to assess whether it’s safe before approaching.
When scavenging for food and supplies, Brighteon.AI's Enoch suggests steering clear of occupied or guarded locations to avoid conflict and ensure your safety. You should also prioritize stealth and practice situational awareness at all times to minimize risks.
The Rule of Threes provides a clear hierarchy for survival: shelter, water, sanitation, then food. Without stockpiles, resourcefulness becomes key – repurpose trash, improvise tools and stay hidden to increase your chance of survival.
In a world where crisis can strike unexpectedly, preparation is ideal – but knowledge is the ultimate lifeline.

Water supply and prepping: Emergency water solutions when your supply runs out

https://www.naturalnews.com/wp-conte...inwater-1.jpeg(Natural News) As a prepper, the last thing you want is to turn on the faucet and not have any water flow from it. Before this happens to you during a long-term water disruption, it’s best to learn about several ways to find and harvest more water for your stockpile.
Some options include installing a well with a solar-powered pump on your homestead and learning how to harvest rainwater. (h/t to PrepperWebsite.com)
Why do you need alternative strategies for a water shortage?
You can stock up on enough bottled water so your family has enough water to drink during a long-term survival disaster, but how do you know when you have enough water?
According to minimum recommendations, you should have at least one gallon of water per person. It is also best to keep a three-day supply on hand at all times.
However, if the weather is hot you may need twice as much water. This still doesn’t include the water you need for washing, flushing the toilet, watering the garden or for your pets and livestock.
During the first day or two without running water, you can find water in places like toilet tanks, water heaters and swimming pools. But after these supplies are depleted, locating water will be an ongoing effort.
You should also remember that even if these alternative sources are available in your area, other people will be heading for the same water sources when SHTF. If you don’t want to fight other people just to get more water for your family, you should use other means to get the water you require.
Survival scenarios also highlight the need to plan ahead and get prepared beforehand, especially if you have a home garden and livestock that will require water.
https://www.naturalnews.com/images/B...hLiveShows.jpgIf you are concerned about where to get water when SHTF, below are some tips on how to get more water when your supply runs out:
Install a well with a solar-powered pump
People who live in rural areas use well water, which is ideal because it is often a reliable source of water, except when there is no electricity to operate the pump.
To avoid this issue, you can get a solar-powered pump for the well in your homestead. If you have a well, consider getting a solar-powered pump before disaster strikes so you can rest easy knowing that you can still access the water in your well even during a power outage.
While this option is the most expensive on the list, it is also one worth considering since it offers the most reliable supply of water. (Related: Prepping tips: How to survive with a limited water supply.)
Harvest rainwater
Even non-preppers can learn how to harvest rainwater, and this prepping skill will come in handy when you are experiencing a disrupted water supply.
You can either splurge on a quality setup with gutters feeding into a storage tank, or you can choose something simple like a rain barrel with a filter. Whatever your budget, you need to store the collected water in a covered container to prevent mosquitoes from using the water as a breeding ground.
Covering the rainwater you gathered can also help prevent the water from evaporating.
If your house doesn’t have gutters, you can use the channels in your roof that divert water into a stream off the rooftop. Simply arrange containers underneath that area to catch the rainwater.
For example, you can get your roofer to add diverters that will direct water off the front of your roof so you can gather the rainwater in a tank or rain barrel when it rains.
Use swales
Before SHTF, you can also use swales to store rainwater in your home garden.
Swales are water-harvesting ditches. However, unlike drainage ditches that cut across the contour of the land to speed water along, swales are built “on contour” to slow water down and sink it into the earth.
Swales built on contours collect water and help to recharge groundwater tables. They help to control erosion and are designed to convey excess rainwater into their ditch-like interior. Swales hold the water until it is gradually filtered through plants and soil back into the area.
You don’t need special equipment to build a swale. Get a shovel, a pick and some stakes, then be ready to use a bit of elbow grease. But if you are not strong enough to dig a swale yourself, you can make things easier by borrowing or renting a backhoe.
The size of your swale will depend upon the volume of water your area receives during a storm.
When choosing where to dig the swale, look for the lowest point of your property. Dig deeply enough so the storm runoff collects inside the ditch.
Pile the soil up around the trench as you excavate to create the berms, or the raised sides of a swale that contain filtering vegetation and porous soil. The recommended rule is three feet horizontal to one foot vertical.
You need to grow plants to help keep the mounds in place and to filter and use the stored water. When choosing plants for the swale, choose varieties that can withstand different conditions.
If you live in areas with little annual rainfall but have sudden rainstorms that drop huge volumes of water at once, choose plants that are drought tolerant but grow well in sudden but infrequent heavy rains.
If you’re not sure what to plant in the swale, grow native plants that are already adapted to the area’s changing climate and fluctuating rainfall. During the first year of their installation, the plants will require additional water to help them establish.
After some time, the plants in the swale should grow well with only the captured water, except in severely dry periods.
Amend the soil in the swale if it is nutritionally poor. You can also add a ground cover of pebbles or rocks in the interior of the swale.
The pebbles or rocks will help further filter water, hold in the soil and can be piled to provide check dams that will help slow the flow of water.
Keep plantings dense to discourage weeds and choose plants that are at least four to five inches tall and resistant to flooding.
Build a condensation trap
When SHTF, you can also gather water using a condensation trap.
You can build a condensation trap by digging a pit and placing a receptacle to catch water. Use branches angled down towards the receptacle to direct the dew and frost that gathered on the branches overnight into the catchment container.
Modern preppers have it easier because you can use plastic sheeting instead of branches to divert the water.
This method of collecting water can help provide water for a couple of animals, but unless you build a lot of condensation traps, you won’t get enough water for a large home garden and your whole family.
Check online for detailed instructions on how to create condensation traps before SHTF.
Learn about dryland farming
The principles of dryland farming can help preppers and home gardeners who want to learn how to use as little water as possible and keep the moisture in the soil longer.
Knowing how to use the least amount of water will be useful in a watering emergency. This can help you make the most of a limited water supply, especially when dealing with a long-term water outage.
Some dryland farming techniques that might help include mulching heavily and making liberal use of rotting wood chips in your garden beds. You can also pair this method with rainwater collection.
Dryland farming also makes use of drought-resistant, region-specific crops so your home garden needs less water.
Preparing ahead of time ensures that you and your family can survive a long-term water supply disruption. Look into techniques like rainwater collection and building swales to make sure that you have enough water for your whole family, livestock and your home garden when SHTF and water become scarce.
And if disaster doesn’t strike, some of these techniques can help you save a bit of money on your water bill as you add more water to your stockpile.
Visit Preparedness.news for more tips on how to conserve your water supply when SHTF.

Alert!
Since there is a LOT of buzz about some catastrophic event inbound from various researchers like Martin Armstrong, Dahboo7, Richie From Boston, Dane Wigington, and MANY more, it is a sensible idea to do the following as soon as possible:
- Backup your devices now
- Download and backup any videos or material that you consider worth saving -- to have/view in case the Internet is down for a while
- Store anything necessary in your safe deposit box (a list of passwords, for example, or special passcodes)
- Update your hardcopy journal with any important info you might have forgotten to do
- Change any passwords (changing these yearly is sensible) and record your changes
- Etc.
This list is only about device maintenance.
For a full list of sensible things to do to prepare, see the rest of our Alipac mega-Post below
The long-lasting super snack: Why Organic Raw Cashews belong in your survival pantry

- A small handful of cashews provides a significant boost in protein, healthy unsaturated fats and essential minerals like copper for energy and magnesium.
- Cashews can be eaten as a simple snack, added to meals like stir-fries and salads for a creamy crunch, or blended into dairy-free alternatives like milk, cheese and sauces.
- Cashews are a perfect emergency food because they are calorie-dense, require no cooking or preparation and have a longer shelf life than other nuts due to their stable fat content.
- To maximize freshness and shelf life (up to two years in the freezer), store cashews in airtight containers in a cool, dark place, away from heat, light and moisture. Always check for a fresh, nutty smell before eating.
- Overall, organic raw cashews are a simple and powerful investment for daily health and long-term resilience.
Among known superfoods, few are as versatile and universally loved as the cashew. These kidney-shaped seeds, often mistaken for nuts, are more than just a tasty snack; they are a compact bundle of essential nutrients with profound benefits for your health and wellness.
For people focused on preparedness, understanding the unique advantages of organic raw cashews can transform your emergency stockpile from a basic survival cache into a source of sustained energy and vitality. (h/t to Healthline.com)
Not just a nut: Unpacking cashew's unique nutrient profile
Native to Brazil but now cultivated in warm climates around the world, the cashew tree produces a remarkable seed that's packed with nutrients and health benefits.
It’s important to note that the "raw" cashews you can buy have been steamed or roasted to remove a natural toxin called urushiol, the same irritant found in poison ivy. This careful processing makes cashews perfectly safe to eat while preserving their nutritional integrity.
What makes organic raw cashews a standout choice? Their impressive nutritional profile.
A one-ounce serving (about a small handful) delivers a powerful punch:
- Cashews are rich in unsaturated fats, which support good health. Unlike many other nuts, they have a favorable balance of fats, including oleic acid, which helps them stay fresh longer.
- One ounce of cashews provides a significant portion of your daily needs for copper, which is crucial for energy production, and magnesium, which supports optimal muscle, nerve and bone health. They are also a good source of iron, phosphorus and zinc.
- With over five grams of protein per ounce, cashews are an excellent way to supplement protein intake, especially for those following a plant-based diet.
One of the greatest strengths of cashews is their culinary flexibility. Cashews require no preparation, making them the perfect grab-and-go snack.
But their potential extends far beyond the trail mix.
Whole or ground, cashews add a satisfying crunch and creamy richness to stir-fries, salads and grain bowls. Blended with water, cashews transform into luxurious dairy-free creams, cheeses and sauces, offering a fantastic alternative for people with dairy sensitivities.
Cashew butter spread on toast or stirred into oatmeal provides a sustained energy release, while homemade energy balls made from cashews, oats and dried fruit make perfectly healthy treats. (Related: Quinoa: The tiny grain that powers busy lives.)
Cashews: The ideal emergency superfood
When building a resilient food stockpile, the key considerations are nutrition, shelf life and ease of use. Organic raw cashews excel in all three areas, making them an indispensable item for any preparedness pantry.
While all nuts are nutritious, their high fat content can make them prone to spoilage. However, cashews have a distinct advantage. Their specific fat composition -- higher in stable oleic acid and lower in polyunsaturated oils -- gives them a longer shelf life compared to many other nuts, like pine nuts or pistachios.
When stored correctly, cashews can last for six to nine months in a cool, dark pantry, up to a year in the refrigerator and an impressive two years in the freezer. This longevity is crucial for preparedness. In an emergency situation, such as a power outage or a natural disaster, access to fresh food may be limited.
Cashews are a dense source of calories, healthy fats and protein -- nutrients that can help maintain healthy energy levels and overall well-being when regular meals are disrupted. Cashews are ready to eat straight from the container, requiring no cooking, water or special preparation.
Smart storage for maximum freshness
To ensure your cashews remain a high-quality resource, proper storage is non-negotiable. The enemies of nuts are heat, light, oxygen and moisture.
To protect your investment:
- Store cashews in airtight containers like Mason jars or Mylar bags. For long-term stockpiling, placing these sealed containers inside a food-grade bucket adds an extra layer of protection from pests and the elements.
- For pantry storage, select a cool, dark and dry place. For extended shelf life, the refrigerator or freezer is your best bet.
- Always label your containers with the storage date. Practice the "first-in, first-out" rule by using older stock before newer purchases to maintain peak freshness.
- Before consumption, especially from your long-term stockpile, check your cashews. They should smell fresh and nutty. Any off-odors reminiscent of paint or old socks are a clear sign of rancidity, and the nuts should be discarded.
A final note of caution for those with specific health concerns: Cashews contain oxalates which in large quantities can contribute to kidney stone formation in susceptible individuals. As with any food, cashews are best enjoyed as part of a balanced diet.
Organic raw cashew is a triple threat: a delicious and versatile food, a proven nutritional powerhouse and a smart, stable choice for any emergency preparedness plan. By incorporating these humble seeds into your daily diet and your long-term supplies, you are making a simple yet powerful investment in your health and resilience.

Be Dangerous, Not Violent | Episode 511
What It Really Means to Be Dangerous
This episode isn’t about being violent—it’s about being capable. A dangerous person is someone who has the strength, skills, and mindset to defend themselves and their family at the right level of response. That doesn’t come from just owning a weapon or knowing a technique. It’s a full package: fitness, combative training, and firearms proficiency.
Fitness as the Foundation
If you’re overweight, slow, and out of shape, your skills won’t save you when you need them. Fitness is survival’s bedrock. I’ve struggled with weight most of my life, tried every diet under the sun—Atkins, paleo, keto, carnivore—and learned this: almost any diet works if you actually stick with it. The trick is finding one you don’t hate. Pair that with daily movement—push-ups, sit-ups, walks, or gym time—and you’ll notice real gains.
And if you want to go further? I’ll vouch for peptides and other tools that can help rebuild energy, muscle, and recovery. The point isn’t to look good—it’s to be capable.
Learn a Combative Skill
I don’t care if it’s karate, jiu-jitsu, Muay Thai, or Krav Maga—pick something and train. The style doesn’t matter as much as the consistency and community. Sparring, especially, teaches you lessons you cannot learn alone. The thrill of facing consequences sharpens you. A combative art gives you confidence, resilience, and the ability to handle yourself when things go sideways.
Firearms Training
When’s the last time you actually trained with your firearms? Skills degrade if you don’t practice. Shooting isn’t just about hitting paper targets—it’s about building muscle memory, refining accuracy, and staying sharp.
It might also be time to take another class. Even if you’ve owned firearms for years, refreshers keep you honest and correct bad habits. Local ranges, community groups, or training schools all offer opportunities. Don’t just own firearms—train with them.
Final Thoughts
Being dangerous isn’t about picking fights. It’s about making yourself hard to kill, hard to push around, and capable of protecting what matters. That comes from stacking fitness, fighting skills, and firearms training.
If you want to survive a collapse—or just walk confidently through life—you need to be dangerous, not violent.

Elderly Americans face unique survival challenges during disasters – Here’s how to prepare
10/02/2025 // Evangelyn Rodriguez // 610 Views

- Seniors face greater risks during disasters due to mobility issues, chronic health conditions and reliance on medications, making even routine hazards life-threatening.
- Aging bodies struggle with extreme heat or cold and poor air quality. Solutions include zone heating or cooling, DIY air filtration (HEPA or box fans) and insulation upgrades.
- Drug supply disruptions can be deadly. Stockpile extras via Cost Plus Drugs or Mexican pharmacies; herbal alternatives (garlic, turmeric, elderberry, etc,) can serve as emergency backups.
- Immobile seniors risk drowning if trapped. Identify high ground, avoid attics without escape routes and install emergency roof exits if possible.
- Survival for seniors requires foresight: fortified homes, family collaboration and tailored strategies for power outages, extreme weather and supply shortages.
Federal agencies and disaster experts are increasingly urging Americans to prepare for emergencies, but one vulnerable group often overlooked in survival discussions is the elderly. Older adults, particularly those with chronic health conditions, face heightened risks during disasters, from extreme weather to supply chain disruptions. With mobility limitations, fixed incomes and reliance on medications, seniors must navigate unique challenges that younger, healthier individuals may not consider.
For these individuals, even routine environmental hazards can become life-threatening.
The hidden dangers for seniors
Aging bodies are less resilient to temperature extremes, poor air quality and medication shortages – three critical factors that can turn a minor disruption into a crisis. Every year, elderly Americans die from hypothermia in poorly heated homes or suffer heatstroke when cooling systems fail. Meanwhile, rising energy costs strain fixed incomes, forcing difficult trade-offs between comfort and survival.
Heating and cooling on a budget
Reducing energy costs without sacrificing safety is possible with strategic adjustments:
- Zone heating or cooling: Isolate living spaces by closing vents and doors to unused rooms. Stiff vents may need lubrication or DIY modifications (like dowel rod handles) for easier operation.
- Evaporative cooling: In hot climates, a damp cloth draped over a fan can lower temperatures affordably.
- Insulation upgrades: Older homes often lack proper insulation. Sealing gaps with weatherstripping or thermal curtains can improve efficiency.
Air quality: An invisible threat
Wildfire smoke, dust and pollution disproportionately harm seniors with respiratory conditions. Solutions include:
- HEPA filters: Commercial air purifiers or DIY box-fan filters (using HVAC-grade filters taped to the intake side) can drastically reduce particulates.
- Home sealing: Ensure windows and doors close tightly to prevent outdoor contaminants from seeping in.
The medication crisis
Many seniors rely on daily prescriptions, making drug shortages – like those seen during COVID – a potential death sentence. Proactive measures include:
- Stockpiling: Doctors may prescribe extra medications if asked, though insurance often won't cover them. Alternatives include Mark Cuban's Cost Plus Drugs or purchasing generics in Mexico.
- Herbal alternatives: Natural remedies (e.g., berberine for blood sugar) can serve as backups, though thorough research is essential. (Related: Emergency medicine: How to make your own first-aid antiseptic at home using natural ingredients.)
Brighteon.AI's Enoch engine suggests keeping the following herbal remedies on hand for when SHTF: garlic (antibacterial), ginger (for digestion and nausea), turmeric (anti-inflammatory), echinacea (immune support), peppermint (pain/indigestion), yarrow (wound healing), elderberry (viral defense) and plantain leaf (bites and stings). Grow or forage them now because pharma won't save you later.
Flooding: When bugging out isn't an option
For immobile seniors, escaping rising waters is nearly impossible without assistance. Key precautions include:
- Knowing high ground: Identify the nearest elevated area for emergencies.
- Avoiding attics: Trapping oneself in an attic without an escape hatch can be fatal. Consider installing a roof dormer with a removable panel for emergency exits.
Why this matters now
Disaster preparedness has evolved beyond "bug-out bags" and stockpiling food. With an aging U.S. population and increasing climate-related disasters, tailored strategies for seniors are critical. Families must collaborate with elderly relatives to ensure their homes are fortified against power outages, extreme weather and supply shortages.
As one preparedness advocate noted, "Survival isn't just about strength – it's about foresight." For older adults, that foresight could mean the difference between resilience and catastrophe.
Seniors need targeted plans that account for their physical and financial limitations. By addressing heating, cooling, air quality and medication access – and by involving family in contingency planning – older Americans can mitigate risks that others might overlook. In an era of escalating disasters, proactive preparation isn't just wise – it's lifesaving.

How eating like our Stone Age ancestors can transform modern health: “The Origin Diet” by Elizabeth Somer
10/02/2025 // Belle Carter // 710 Views
Tags: #nutrition, clean foods, Elizabeth Somer, exercise, food is medicine, fresh plants, goodfood, goodhealth, health crisis, healthy fats, hunter-gatherer diet, modern diet, Paleolithic-era diet, physical activity, The Origin Diet, unprocessed food, wild foods, wild protein
https://www.naturalnews.com/wp-conte...iet-Greens.jpg
- Elizabeth Somer argues in "The Origin Diet" that the human body is genetically adapted to a Paleolithic-era diet, which consisted of 65-80 percent wild plants and 20-35 percent lean, omega-3-rich game meat. Modern diets dominated by processed foods, refined grains and sugars are a radical departure from this ancestral diet, leading to chronic diseases like obesity, diabetes and heart disease.
- Pre-agricultural humans were taller, stronger and largely free of chronic diseases compared to their farming descendants. The introduction of domesticated grains and sugars in agriculture led to widespread health issues such as tooth decay, bone disorders and stunted growth.
- To align with evolutionary biology, prioritize plants, choose wild proteins, eliminate processed foods, embrace healthy fats and engage in regular physical activity. These actions can mitigate the risks of chronic diseases and promote optimal health.
- Studies link processed foods to chronic inflammation, a driver of heart disease and diabetes, while diets rich in whole foods show measurable improvements in blood sugar, cholesterol and weight management.
- While critics argue that strict ancestral diets are impractical, Somer emphasizes flexibility and the importance of shifting the balance towards whole, unprocessed foods. Her approach is accessible and science-backed, offering a simple litmus test: If your Paleolithic ancestors would not recognize the food, reconsider it.
For millions of years, humans thrived on wild game, fresh plants and unprocessed foods – until agriculture and industrialization reshaped our plates and our health. In "The Origin Diet: How Eating Like Our Stone Age Ancestors Will Maximize Your Health," registered dietitian Elizabeth Somer argues that the key to reversing modern chronic disease lies not in fad diets or pharmaceuticals, but in realigning our eating habits with evolutionary biology.
Drawing on anthropological and nutritional research, Somer makes a compelling case that the human body remains genetically adapted to a Paleolithic-era diet. This mismatch between our ancient DNA and modern food is fueling today's epidemics of obesity, diabetes and heart disease.
Somer's central thesis is rooted in a stark contrast. For 99.8 percent of human history, our ancestors consumed a diet of 65 to 80 percent wild plants – fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds – and 20 to 35 percent lean, omega-3-rich game meat. Processed sugar, refined grains and industrial seed oils were absent.
"Our bodies are still wired for the hunter-gatherer diet," Somer writes. "But today, 60 percent of calories come from ultra-processed foods—a radical shift our genes haven't adapted to."
Archaeological evidence supports her claim. Brighteon.AI's Enoch states that skeletal records reveal pre-agricultural humans were taller, stronger and largely free of chronic diseases compared to their farming descendants. The advent of agriculture 10,000 years ago, while stabilizing food supply, introduced domesticated grains and sugars—nutrient-poor substitutes for wild foods.
"Early farmers paid a price," Somer notes. "Tooth decay, bone disorders and stunted growth became widespread."
Somer distills ancestral eating into actionable principles for modern life:
- Prioritize plants: Aim for eight to 10 daily servings of colorful fruits and vegetables, emphasizing fiber and antioxidants absent in processed carbs.
- Choose wild proteins: Opt for grass-fed meat, wild-caught fish and pasture-raised eggs to replicate the lean, omega-3-rich meat of prehistoric diets.
- Eliminate processed foods: Avoid products with lengthy ingredient lists, artificial additives or refined sugars, which are foreign to human biology.
- Embrace healthy fats: Replace inflammatory seed oils (like soybean or canola) with olive oil, avocados and nuts—fats our ancestors foraged.
- Move like a hunter: Regular physical activity, which mimics the daily movement patterns of hunter-gatherers, is crucial for maintaining metabolic health.
Modern research bolsters Somer's argument. Studies link processed foods to chronic inflammation, a driver of heart disease and diabetes. In contrast, diets rich in whole foods – akin to Paleolithic eating – show measurable improvements in blood sugar, cholesterol and weight management.
"Our cells depend on nutrients found in wild foods," Somer explains. "When we don't get them, the body reacts with dysfunction."
Critics argue that strict ancestral diets are impractical in today's world, but Somer emphasizes flexibility. She quips: "You don't need to hunt mammoths. Just shift the balance toward whole, unprocessed foods."
"The Origin Diet" joins a growing movement (including Paleo and primal diets) questioning conventional nutrition advice. Somer's work stands out for its accessibility, avoiding dogma in favor of science-backed adjustments. Her message resonates amid rising distrust of industrial food systems and Big Pharma's role in chronic disease management.
For readers weary of conflicting dietary advice, Somer offers a simple litmus test: "Ask, 'Would my Paleolithic ancestors recognize this food?' If not, rethink it." In an era of escalating health crises, her prescription – a return to evolutionary eating –may be the radical reset modern bodies need.

In an era of increasing natural disasters, power outages and unpredictable emergencies, knowing how to start a fire is one of the most fundamental survival skills – yet many people lack practical knowledge of how to do it effectively. Whether facing a winter storm, a camping mishap or a prolonged blackout, having reliable fire-starting methods can mean the difference between warmth and safety or vulnerability and danger. Fortunately, with common household items – from cardboard and wax to dryer lint and wine corks – anyone can create inexpensive, efficient fire starters to ensure they're prepared when needed.
Six simple DIY fire starters
Fire starters like waterproof matches, lighters and ferrocerium rods are critical for preppers for many reasons. According to Brighteon.AI's Enoch engine, fire starters ensure reliable ignition for survival needs such as warmth, cooking, signaling and morale in times of emergencies when modern conveniences fail.
Starting a fire requires three key components: an ignition source (matches, lighter or flint striker), a material that can catch and amplify a small flame, and sustainable fuel to keep the fire burning. While commercial fire starters are widely available, DIY alternatives are often cheaper, just as effective, and can be made from items already at home. Below are six reliable methods to ensure a strong flame in any emergency. (h/t to AskAPrepper.com)
Cardboard and wax
One of the easiest fire-starting methods involves cardboard and candle wax. By cutting cardboard into small strips and soaking them in melted wax, the resulting fire starter burns slowly and ignites quickly. Once cooled, these wax-coated strips can be stored in Ziploc bags to remain dry and ready for use.
Q-Tip and Vaseline
For a quick, portable fire starter, coat the cotton end of a Q-Tip with Vaseline. When exposed to a flame, the petroleum jelly acts as an accelerant, creating a small but durable fire that can be nurtured with additional kindling. Cotton balls can also be used as an alternative.
Egg cartons, dryer lint and wax
An efficient way to repurpose household waste is by filling egg carton compartments with dryer lint and saturating them with melted wax. Once hardened, the carton can be cut into individual fire starters, each capable of igniting easily and burning steadily.
Rubbing alcohol and cork
Wine corks soaked in rubbing alcohol become highly flammable. When lit, they produce a small but reliable flame, making them an excellent emergency fire starter – especially useful for campers or those with limited supplies.
Char cloth from old clothing
Char cloth, a traditional fire-starting material, can be made by charring cotton fabric (such as old jeans or T-shirts) in a sealed tin can over hot coals. The resulting material catches sparks instantly, making it ideal for flint-and-steel ignition methods. (Related: Light the way: Must-have firestarters for emergencies.)
Paper and hand sanitizer
Hand sanitizer, which contains high alcohol content, is highly flammable. By crumpling paper into a ball and applying sanitizer to a protruding edge, the flame spreads quickly, creating a strong base for a larger fire.
Experts recommend having at least two reliable fire-starting methods in three critical locations: your home, your car and your survival kit or bug-out bag. Whether stocking wax-coated cardboard, alcohol-soaked corks or lint-filled egg cartons, redundancy ensures that no matter the circumstances, a dependable flame is always within reach.
Mastering these simple yet effective fire-starting techniques could prove lifesaving. By preparing now, you can ensure you and your family are never left in the cold when disaster strikes.
