DIY Solar Projects: How to Put the Sun to Work in Your Home
Advances in solar technology have made many DIY-friendly products available to consumers, several of which will be hitting the market for the first time in 2011. These include solar water heaters, solar battery charging stations, solar powered lights, photovoltaic shingles that provide supplementary electricity, solar heat pumps, and solar panel kits that generate primary home electrical service. Among the step-by-step projects is a solar water heating system you can build and install yourself for under $1000; simple thermosyphon solar heat collectors for barns and outbuildings; or "heat grabbers" that you can fabricate for $50 in materials and position below a south-facing window to provide auxiliary winter heat.

How To Identify The Use of A Bell Pepper
While terming this to be "gender" is not accurate, as bell pepper plants are hermaphroditic, this does appear to be a method used to identify which type of bell pepper is best for each purpose - either cooking, eating raw or for seed collection. There is a simple method for identifying which bell pepper has the traits you desire. Look on the underside of the pepper, the ones with four bumps are "female" and those with three bumps are "male". The ones termed "female" peppers, or those with more bumps, contain more seeds and will be used largely for collection of seeds and replanting (hence "female"), but are also sweeter and better for eating raw. The ones with three or fewer bumps are better for cooking and contain fewer seeds.
However, bell peppers are hermaphroditic, so any reference to gender is for a helpful memory aid only.

Directions:
1. Prepare your herb-infused olive oil.
2. Using a double boiler or small pot, heat — over low heat – the herb-infused olive oil and beeswax until the wax is completely melted.
3. Remove from heat and allow the mixture to cool slightly.
4. Add the essential oils and stir until well combined.

DIY Hanging Drip Waterer
Use recyclable materials or extra objects around the house for your very own drip irrigation systems.
How it works:
1. Use any form of plastic bottle with a functioning cap from a 20oz bottle as pictured to a 1 gallon milk jug to serve as the drip system/reservoir.
2. Drill and screw. Drill must be smaller than screw you'll be using. Simply drill a hole in the top center of the cap. Another option is to use a punch, which involves simply using a nail that is smaller in diameter than your screw and slowly tapping it into the cap to create an entry hole.
3. Using a knife, carefully punch a small hole in the base of the bottle and use scissors to finish the refilling/air hole. Any size is fine as long as you can effectively refill the bottle and there is no excess evaporation. Some simply cut the entire base off, but this often compromises the strength of the bottle for hanging. Creating a large hole, but still within the circumference of the base is a great method.
4. Insert your chosen screw into the cap. From there you either remove and re-insert the screw multiple times until it creates a leak of sorts where the screw and cap meet, or you can rock the screw slightly back and forth until a small leak is created. Be sure to pay attention to the speed of the dripping and adjust the opening only a bit at a time until you have the drip speed you desire. Keep in mind that too slow of a leak and it will likely become clogged.
5. If you wish to drip at a higher speed, a similar method can be employed using even a 5 gallon bucket or larger, also, drilling a separate hole next to or adjoining the screw hole is an excellent idea, as is deforming the hole via rocking to such an extent that the water flows much faster.
6. Hang the waterer as you would any pot or other item, using rope or wire. Pictured is wire being run through 2 small holes right near the base in the rear - naturally well above the water level - and integrated into the hanging system of the pot itself. However, we recommend using wire to hold the entire bottle from ring near cap, to handles and naturally a time or two around the bottle itself and hanging it separately next to and over the plants you wish to water. This way there is more strength in holding the bottle and less risk of tearing. Rope, twine or even macrame rope as used in holding potted plants is perfectly useful as well. Just be sure the rope is strong enough and do not excessively wet the rope either.
7. Another option is to dig a hole next to a plant or in between a grouping of plants that is deep enough to bury at least one third to one half of the bottle. If you position the bottle in amongst a grouping of plants it will be hidden from view. Place the bottle in the hole with the cap side down and secure it into the hole by pressing dirt around it. This will ensure that your bottle stays in place. Pour water into the bottle until it is full. You can add fertilizer to the bottle every few weeks so that your plants are fertilized right at the roots.
You will need to fill your bottle when it is empty, once a day or less depending on how much direct, hot sun your plants receive. Make several bottles to place in all your large containers or next to plants in your garden such as tomatoes that require a lot of water.

A recently-published Harvard University meta-analysis funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has concluded that children who live in areas with highly fluoridated water have "significantly lower" IQ scores than those who live in low fluoride areas.
In a 32-page report that can be downloaded free of charge from Environmental Health Perspectives, the researchers said:
A recent report from the U.S. National Research Council (NRC 2006) concluded that adverse effects of high fluoride concentrations in drinking water may be of concern and that additional research is warranted. Fluoride may cause neurotoxicity in laboratory animals, including effects on learning and memory ...
To summarize the available literature, we performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of published studies on increased fluoride exposure in drinking water and neurodevelopmental delays. We specifically targeted studies carried out in rural China that have not been widely disseminated, thus complementing the studies that have been included in previous reviews and risk assessment reports ...
Findings from our meta-analyses of 27 studies published over 22 years suggest an inverse association between high fluoride exposure and children's intelligence ... The results suggest that fluoride may be a developmental neurotoxicant that affects brain development at exposures much below those that can cause toxicity in adults ...
Serum-fluoride concentrations associated with high intakes from drinking-water may exceed 1 mg/L, or 50 Smol/L, thus more than 1000-times the levels of some other neurotoxicants that cause neurodevelopmental damage. Supporting the plausibility of our findings, rats exposed to 1 ppm (50 Smol/L) of water-fluoride for one year showed morphological alterations in the brain and increased levels of aluminum in brain tissue compared with controls ...
In conclusion, our results support the possibility of adverse effects of fluoride exposures on children's neurodevelopment. Future research should formally evaluate dose-response relations based on individual-level measures of exposure over time, including more precise prenatal exposure assessment and more extensive standardized measures of neurobehavioral performance, in addition to improving assessment and control of potential confounders.

"I beat cancer with a raw diet and holistic lifestyle"

Janette Murray-Wakelin beat cancer through a raw food diet and has enjoyed better health than ever since going raw. She tells Sarah Best the story of her journey to optimum health.
When Janette Murray-Wakelin was diagnosed with highly aggressive carcinoma breast cancer over six years ago, she was given six months to live. The tumour was three centimetres and the cancer had spread into the chest wall and the lymph nodes. It was recommended that she undergo conventional chemotherapy and radiation treatment, which she was told may possibly extend her life a further six months.
At 52 years, a mother of two and grandmother of one, she was not willing to accept this prognosis. "I had lived a very healthy lifestyle, being vegetarian for 25 years and vegan for the previous 15 years," Janette explains. "I have also been extremely physically active all my life, so I was quite shocked with the diagnosis. However, the power of intention is far greater than that of fear, and I had every intention of staying around for a very long time!
Janette was alerted to the possibility of cancer being present when her little grandson Kieran inadvertently found the tumour. "I had been carrying him all day as we walked around a local festival and he had fallen asleep in my arms," she remembers. "When we finally got home and I put him down, I noticed some pain in the breast area where he had been holding on to me. It was then that I discovered the lump. I was not overly perturbed; I had always done regular self breast examinations and had never had any sign of a problem. In fact, apart from a bout of scarlet fever and measles as a tiny child, I had never been sick in my life. I have never had so much as a cold and I've never taken any drugs, not even an aspirin! I thought it was just bruising to the tissue from being held onto for hours by my grandson."
It was Janette's daughter who suggested she should have it looked at and the following day she had an ultrasound and biopsy, which led to the diagnosis. "My intuitive response to the recommended treatment was that it did not make sense to compromise the body's system further," Janette explains. "It seemed obvious to me that I should be helping the body to rejuvenate and rebuild, thereby reversing the problem. My instinct told me that treating the symptoms would not address the cause. I was also convinced that I was not meant to die of cancer, so I treated the diagnosis as a challenge. It seemed to me that this was just a message from my body that there was a problem I needed to deal with."
A year earlier, Janette had been present at her grandson's birth and had held his little hand for his first 24 hours of life. "I promised him that we would have many wonderful times together over the years and that I would always be there for him," she recalls. "Now he had brought this to my attention so that I could take care of the problem and be able to keep my promise!"
Janette and her husband Alan have spent most of their lives travelling together worldwide. They married and their two children were born while they were still in their early twenties. In search of a healthy lifestyle for their little family, this adventurous couple sailed from their home country of New Zealand when their children were very small. Their sailing boat was completely self-sufficient, relying on the four winds to take them throughout the South Pacific; visiting, living and working in places like the Tongan Islands, Micronesia and Papua New Guinea.
"Our time on the ocean was incredible," Janette recalls. "We learned a lot about ourselves from living on the sea. Most of the time it was so serene, but there were moments of awe when the storms raged around us! It was fun home-schooling our children and as a family, we grew very close," she mused. "It was a carefree life with very little stress, our food was mostly fresh fruit and vegetables and our environment was pretty clean and green."
It was hard for Janette to think of what the cause of her illness may have been given the healthy lifestyle she had been living. However, during a maintenance refit for the sailboat, she did suffer an accident, which exposed her to a high dose of toxins. "I was painting the boat when the scaffolding collapsed under me," she recalls. "It happened so fast that I was still holding the can of paint when I hit the ground! I was completely covered in marine paint that has toxic 'antifouling' properties. It was in my hair, my eyes, nose, ears and mouth. I ingested quite a bit and my skin was covered in paint. It took three months before my normal skin colour came back and since the skin is the largest organ of the body, over-exposure for me was inevitable!"
After four years sailing in the South Pacific, the family embarked on a new adventure for a further four years; living and working on a cargo ship on the inland waterways throughout Europe. "This adventure is another story in itself," Janette says, "but during that time I was also exposed to toxic fall-out from the Chernobyl disaster. Looking back over my life and remembering those two times when I was over-exposed to toxins, I realized that my body must have been highly compromised."
Whether it was one incident or the other, or perhaps the combination of both, Janette was sure that the toxic load in her body predisposed her to the onset of cancer. "I could think of no other explanation, but once I had established the likely cause, I felt more empowered to do something about it," she says. "I was no longer guessing, taking a gamble on treatment, nor in fear of the outcome. I knew that I could take control of the situation myself, doing 100% the best I could for my body."
The family's initial reaction to the diagnosis was to research all they could about breast cancer and the possible causes and the treatments that were recommended, as well as looking into natural holistic therapies and making lifestyle changes that would be most likely to result in a positive outcome.
"We needed to know all the possibilities so that I could make an informed choice as to the best course of action to take," she says. "I knew that it made sense to do everything I could to give the body the tools it needed to take me on my journey to optimum health. Our extensive research not only gave us the knowledge to do just that, but also the confidence to know that I had made the right choice."
With the help of a naturopathic physician, Janette established a regime that would support mind, body and spirit. This intensive regime included intravenous immune therapy; infrared detoxification therapy; increasing the amount of oxygen to the body through ozone treatment; conscious breathing; aerobic exercise; visualization; meditation; positive thinking and spiritual awareness; and optimal nutrition through juicing, wheatgrass and living food nutrition.
For the following six months after receiving the diagnosis, Janette spent three hours a day, five days a week at the naturopathic clinic having therapy to help boost the immune system. "I used the time sitting hooked up to the intravenous drip to relax. It also gave me time to do more research," she said.
She increased the amount of exercise that she was already doing on a daily basis, incorporating yoga and long distance running. "With yoga I was able to reunite with myself. I came to know my inner self and to love myself unconditionally. My running became more meditative. I chose to run on trails in the mountains or barefoot in the sand along the beach. I could feel again the sense of freedom that I remembered when I ran as a child." She adds: "I visualized achieving personal goals that I had long since put aside - perhaps I would write, perhaps I would paint. I visualized myself proudly looking on at my grandson's wedding then going full circle and being present at his child's birth."
Daily sessions in the infrared sauna maximized the detoxification process. "I could feel my body ridding itself of toxins while enjoying the feeling of complete relaxation during the sessions," she remembers. "At the same time, my nutritional intake took a huge leap. I started juicing in earnest. It made sense that I could consume more nutrients by juicing because I just wouldn't be able to eat that amount of food. If it takes 4 cups of carrots to produce 1 cup of juice, and I could drink 4 cups of juice per day, I knew I was way ahead of the game," she said. "I think I was close to consuming a truckload of carrots every week during those six months! My hands turned carrot-coloured, but I didn't care! I was alive and running!"
She also started taking wheatgrass: "When I learned that one ounce of wheatgrass juice has the equivalent nutritional value of 2lbs of green leafy vegetables - more than most people eat in a week - I never hesitated." Apart from having all the vitamins and most of the minerals the body needs to be healthy, wheatgrass juice also has all the amino acids making it a complete protein. Like all greens, wheatgrass is also very high in chlorophyll, which is like giving an oxygen infusion to the body. When taken, the juice goes directly to the bloodstream, oxygenating the blood and the whole body.
"I knew from the research that we had done that this was a crucial factor in stopping the mutation of cancer cells," Janette explains. "Cancer cannot survive in an oxygenated environment, therefore the more oxygen I could pump into my body through exercise, conscious breathing and drinking wheatgrass, the better!"
Although Janette had been vegetarian and vegan for most of her life, she decided that if she was going to "give it 100%", she would also eliminate all cooked food, thereby getting the maximum amount of nutrients from all foods she consumed. "I couldn't believe the difference in the way I felt within only one week of changing to 100% raw food," she remembers. "The first thing I noticed was that my clarity of mind was intensely heightened. I no longer had to think about decision making. Everything became very clear; there was no hesitation. I lost 15lb within the first month of eating 100% raw food, which took me just below my recommended weight. The following month my weight came back up a few pounds and has not changed since," she says.
During the first six months, Janette's body revisited old injuries that had obviously not completely healed. For example, during her accident with the paint, she sustained an injury to her elbow that had left her unable to straighten her arm. She experienced ten days of pain in the elbow, similar to that which she had endured at the time of the accident, but when the pain stopped she could straighten her arm again! "I also found I had much more energy than before and that it lasted longer. It was especially evident during my long training runs and my physical performance level increased," she says. "There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that consuming 100% raw food made a huge difference to my recovery time and to my overall healing."
It is interesting that although the lifestyle changes Janette made were minimal - as her diet and lifestyle were already very healthy - the positive results were profound. "I really only had to stop eating the odd muffin, a sandwich now and then, eliminate the pasta and stop wokking my vegetables!" she laughs. "I had already eliminated meat and dairy and I had never eaten processed or junk food, so the change to 100% raw food for me was not that big, but the change to my overall health was huge. Not only did I immediately experience clarity of mind, increased energy, specific injury healing and a feeling of well-being, but I actually cured myself of cancer!"
Within the six months Janette had been told by doctors was her maximum expected lifespan, she received a clean bill of health. There was no longer any sign of cancer cells in her body. At that point, she came off the immune therapy regime, but has continued with all other aspects of her raw lifestyle. Janette is quick to mention that those crucial six months were also filled with love, laughter and lots of support from her family and friends. "I am blessed with a loving family who rallied around me and helped with the research, with physical and mental support, and most of all," she emphasizes, "with their unwavering conviction that the path I had chosen was mine to choose. I believe having unconditional support is also paramount in healing the body."
She adds: "I now have two more grandchildren whom I believe I would never have known had I not made these informed choices to follow a raw diet and lifestyle. My diagnosis of cancer and resulting journey to optimum health has been an experience I am truly grateful for. I know for certain that I will continue on the raw path, as I continue to experience more health benefits and an ever-increasing enlightened consciousness. Every day is exciting when you are raw!"
As a result of this life changing experience, Janette and Alan established the ZenZero Centre for Optimum Health in Courtenay on Vancouver Island in Canada, where they offer 'raw lifestyle programmes' based on a holistic approach incorporating mind, body and spirit. On a weekly basis, health presentations, seminars and workshops are offered by over 40 holistic practitioners affiliated with the centre, and international health educators speak monthly. ZenZero also sponsors weekly and monthly raw food potlucks and has a raw lifestyle store, a raw juice fountain, and The Raw Food Oasis vegan restaurant. Both Janette and Alan are 100% raw and their staff of 20 also follow the raw lifestyle.

Surviving Survivalism – Live the Life! (100% Free eBook Download)

Our friends Dan and Sheila at Surviving Survivalism have made their wildly popular book available for free as an electronic download to anyone who’s interested in learning more about what it takes to really live the prepper and survivalist lifestyle.
Like many of us, they lived the suburban life, plugged directly into the system. They eventually unplugged, relocated to rural America and became self sufficient. They’ve built their own home with their bare hands. They produce their own food. They do not rely on the system as we know it to survive – at all. And, they have always been happy to share their knowledge with those looking to get off the grid.
In addition to extensive information and suggestions covering topics that include developing your land, security, food production, alternative power and everything else you might need to know about living a self reliant lifestyle, Dan and Sheila take extra care to explain the reality of going off-grid.
Do you really want to disconnect from the system as we know it? To not have to depend on your local grocer for food, your power company for electricity, or your local coffee brew house for your daily cup of Joe?
Then here’s some advice from the book:
“Like being at the poker table, to win you must either be all in, or don’t bother playing.”To get away from our existing paradigm and dependency, we must change our mindset. Dan and Sheila explain what that means, and then they teach you how to do it.
The following excerpt is republished with permission from Surviving Survivalism: How to Avoid Survivalism Culture Shock and is available as a free download directly from their web site.
Many people excuse themselves from self reliance/ survivalism by saying, “I don’t want to live my life in fear,” assuming that we are here in our retreat because we fear the outside world. What they don’t understand is that they are the ones living in fear day in and day out, but in living with it every day, it’s hard to notice.
Answer this honestly – why do you buckle your seat belt? Is it because you are going to have an accident today and you think it will prevent you from injury?
Does it protect you any better than an air bag does? There are times when a seat belt is a detriment to the accident victim. If you are honest, you buckle your seat belt because that is the price you pay to drive on the highways, even city streets, even rural roads, without being stopped and harassed by the local or state police and given an expensive ticket. You fear the consequences of not buckling your seat belt in order to drive or be a passenger on the public roads.
Why do you not make a joke in the airport? Is it because you have no sense of humor? Or is it because you are afraid that someone will be listening and call the “See something/Say something” hotline?
We’ve been taught to fear the authorities starting with school days when we were afraid not to finish our homework.
So who is it who lives in fear? When you truly disconnect from society, that’s when you have lost the fear. When you know that you can depend on yourself, no matter what happens, that’s when you have lost the fear.
With the very delicate state of the world – geo-politics, economic collapse, strange weather, threat of war on a global scale set to break out at any moment – the real issue is not selling you on why to do this. The real issue is, will you be one of the rare ones who see the storm coming and prepares or one of those who gets it at the very last minute and sees the need to prepare too late.
Suffice it to say that no one can or should talk you in to this life style. You are the only one who can do that. But if your reading includes books like this one, then it should be safe to say that you do understand the need to prepare and are looking for ways to accomplish that.
Get your free copy of this book – no strings attached.
Whether you are new to preparedness, or a seasoned pro, it’s well worth your time to put this one in your library.

If you have access to sugar or red maple trees why not try your hand at making some maple syrup.
The Urban Forager has a really great article on tapping the trees and then tells you how to make the syrup from the sap.
This was a fascinating read and I am going to scout around and see if I can find some trees I can tap and try this out.

Ginger Beats Drugs In Defeating Cancer, Motion Sickness and Inflammation
Along side turmeric, ginger is one of the world's most potent disease-fighting spices. It has been widely regarded for centuries as a natural remedy for a variety of ailments. The use of ginger is numero uno when it comes to curing common cold and cough. It is also superior to pharmaceutical drugs in defeating cancer, motion sickness and inflammation.
http://www.preventdisease.com/images/gingerme.jpg
Astoundingly, ginger is even more effective than many cancer drugs at shrinking tumors. Commonly consumed across the world in small doses among food and beverage products, the medicinal properties of ginger far surpass even advanced pharmaceutical inventions.
Cancer
Whole ginger extract was shown to exert significant growth-inhibiting and death-inductory effects in a spectrum of prostate cancer cells. Over 17 other studies have also reached similar conclusions on ginger’s anticancer benefits, with the spice being shown by peer-reviewed research to positively impact beyond 101 diseases.
The subject of one study based out of Georgia State University, whole ginger extract was revealed to shrink prostate tumor size by a whopping 56% in mice. The anticancer properties were observed in addition to ginger’s role in reducing inflammation as well as being a rich source of life-enhancing antioxidants. But what about cancer drugs? Could this simple spice really topple the advanced pharmaceuticals that are often touted as the ‘only option’ for cancer patients by medical doctors?
It turns out that cancer drugs are not only severely ineffective at permanently shrinking tumors, but they actually make tumors larger and kill the patient more quickly. More specifically, the tumors have been found to ‘metasize’, meaning they come back bigger and more stronger than their original size. What’s more, the ‘metasizing’ was found to be very aggressive. According to scientists Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, the premium priced drugs were little more than death sentences for many patients.
“Whatever manipulations we’re doing to tumors can inadvertently do something to increase the tumor numbers to become more metastatic, which is what kills patients at the end of the day,” said study author Dr. Raghu Kalluri.
Inflammation
Ginger is one of the best pain killers in the world having analgesic properties like the popular ibuprofen, only better. It contains a quartet, gingerols, paradols, shogaols, and zingerone which are active ingredients to reduce pain. Ginger reduces pain-causing prostaglandin levels in the body. A study by researchers found that when people who were suffering from muscular pain were given ginger, they all experienced improvement. The recommended dosage of ginger is between 500 and 1,000 milligrams per day. Drink ginger tea or place shavings in your foods. Either way will get you relief from that recurring pain.
During the past 25 years, many laboratories have provided scientific support for the long-held belief that ginger contains constituents with antiinflammatory properties. The original discovery of ginger's inhibitory effects on prostaglandin biosynthesis in the early 1970s has been repeatedly confirmed. This discovery identified ginger as an herbal medicinal product that shares pharmacological properties with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, but without the side effects.
Ginger suppresses prostaglandin synthesis through inhibition of specific enzymes. An important extension of this early work was the observation that ginger also suppresses inflammatory biosynthesis by inhibiting inflammatory proteins. This pharmacological property distinguishes ginger from nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
This discovery preceded the observation that dual inhibitors of these enzymes and inflammatory proteins may have a better therapeutic profile and have fewer side effects than non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
The characterization of the pharmacological properties of ginger entered a new phase with the discovery that ginger extract inhibits the induction of several genes involved in the inflammatory response.
These include genes encoding cytokines, chemokines, and the inducible enzymes. This discovery provided the first evidence that ginger modulates biochemical pathways activated in chronic inflammation.
Motion Sickness
A study in the journal Lancet involved 36 people highly susceptible to motion sickness. The researchers had the subjects take either two capsules of powdered ginger, an antinausea medication or a placebo, and then, 20 minutes later, spin on a motorized chair for up to six minutes. Taking ginger delayed the onset of sickness about twice as long as taking the medication. The study also found that half the subjects who took ginger lasted the full six minutes, compared with none of those given the placebo or the medication.
A study by Danish scientists looked at 80 naval cadets prone to seasickness and found that those given one gram of ginger powder suffered less in a four-hour period then those given medication.
Researchers have demonstrated that ginger beats dimenhydrate, the main ingredient in motion sickness drugs such as Dramamine, for controlling symptoms of seasickness and motion sickness. Ginger stimulates saliva flow and digestive activity, settles the stomach, relieves vomiting, eases pain from gas and diarrhea, and is effective as an anti-nausea remedy.
Why Is Ginger So Important?
"Ginger is very popularly used in Ayurveda for its benefits in digestion and respiratory disorders. It is a wonderful carminative, ant flatulent, stimulant and expectorant," said Ayurvedic consultant Dr. Jaishree Bhattacharjee. She adds, "Ginger has many useful minerals like calcium, phosphorus, iron, magnesium, copper, zinc and few others."
Zingerone, shogaols, gingerols, and volatile oils give ginger its distinct aroma and flavour, as well as its medical properties. The amount of these therapeutic compounds in ginger is determined by geography, time of harvest, and processing methods.

Ginger as an appetizer?
When used before meals, ginger improves appetite by igniting digestive fire due to its hot potency. It also enhances digestion due to its pungent taste and alleviates toxins of indigestion from the body.
Besides cold, ginger is useful for...
"Fresh juice of ginger is used to cure symptoms of cough and cold. It helps stop watery discharge from nose and help cure headache and fever associated with common cold if taken in tea or as decoction with basil and honey," Dr. Jaishree continues to list hidden benefits of ginger.
Different ways of using ginger for home remedies
"One can eat thin slices of ginger in a salt and limejuice mixture before and after meals to improve appetite and digestion."
This can be the perfect remedy for fussy children. And adults too: Ginger could be a replacement for wine as an appetizer.
"It can be used in cooking as a fresh spice to enhance the taste."
"Therapeutically ginger juice is mixed with basil leaves juice and honey to cure cough and cold."
"Ginger juice application is said to be good for hypo pigmented patches on your skin."
"It can be used in scrubs and baths for fresh rejuvenating aroma."

Eight Ingredients You Never Want to See on Your Nutrition Label.
source: Wake Up World
1. BHA
This preservative is used to prevent rancidity in foods that contain oils. Unfortunately, BHA (butylated hydroxyanisole) has been shown to cause
cancer in rats, mice, and hamsters. The reason the FDA hasn’t banned it is largely technical—the cancers all occurred in the rodents’ forestomachs, an organ that humans don’t have. Nevertheless, the study, published in the Japanese Journal of Cancer Research, concluded that BHA was “reasonably anticipated to be a carcinogen,” and as far as I’m concerned, that’s reason enough to eliminate it from your diet.
2. Parabens
These synthetic preservatives are used to inhibit mold and yeast in food. The problem is parabens may also disrupt your body’s hormonal balance. A study in Food Chemical Toxicology found that daily ingestion decreased sperm and testosterone production in rats, and parabens have been found present in breast cancer tissues.
3. Partially Hydrogenated Oil
I’ve harped on this before, but it bears repeating: Don’t confuse “0 g trans fat” with being trans fat-free. The FDA allows products to claim zero grams of trans fat as long as they have less than half a gram per serving. That means they can have 0.49 grams per serving and still be labeled a no-trans-fat food. Considering that two grams is the absolute most you ought to consume in a day, those fractions can quickly add up. The telltale sign that your snack is soiled with the stuff? Look for partially hydrogenated oil on the ingredient statement. If it’s anywhere on there, then you’re ingesting artery-clogging trans fat.
4. Sodium Nitrite
Nitrites and nitrates are used to inhibit botulism-causing bacteria and to maintain processed meats’ pink hues, which is why the FDA allows their use. Unfortunately, once ingested, nitrite can fuse with amino acids (of which meat is a prime source) to form nitrosamines, powerful carcinogenic compounds. Ascorbic and erythorbic acids—essentially vitamin C—have been shown to decrease the risk, and most manufacturers now add one or both to their products, which has helped. Still, the best way to reduce risk is to limit your intake.
5. Caramel Coloring
This additive wouldn’t be dangerous if you made it the old-fashioned way—with water and sugar, on top of a stove. But the food industry follows a different recipe: They treat sugar with ammonia, which can produce some nasty carcinogens. How carcinogenic are these compounds? A Center for Science in the Public Interest report asserted that the high levels of caramel color found in soda account for roughly 15,000 cancers in the U.S. annually. Another good reason to scrap soft drinks? They’re among The 20 Worst Drinks in America.
6. Castoreum
Castoreum is one of the many nebulous “natural ingredients” used to flavor food. Though it isn’t harmful, it is unsettling. Castoreum is a substance made from beavers’ castor sacs, or anal scent glands. These glands produce potent secretions that help the animals mark their territory in the wild. In the food industry, however, 1,000 pounds of the unsavory ingredient are used annually to imbue foods—usually vanilla or raspberry flavored—with a distinctive, musky flavor.
7. Food Dyes
Plenty of fruit-flavored candies and sugary cereals don’t contain a single gram of produce, but instead rely on artificial dyes and flavorings to suggest a relationship with nature. Not only do these dyes allow manufacturers to mask the drab colors of heavily processed foods, but certain hues have been linked to more serious ailments. A Journal of Pediatrics study linked Yellow 5 to hyperactivity in children, Canadian researchers found Yellow 6 and Red 40 to be contaminated with known carcinogens, and Red 3 is known to cause tumors. The bottom line? Avoid artificial dyes as much as possible.
8. Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein
Hydrolyzed vegetable protein, used as a flavor enhancer, is plant protein that has been chemically broken down into amino acids. One of these acids, glutamic acid, can release free glutamate. When this glutamate joins with free sodium in your body, they form monosodium glutamate (MSG), an additive known to cause adverse reactions—headaches, nausea, and weakness, among others—in sensitive individuals. When MSG is added to products directly, the FDA requires manufacturers to disclose its inclusion on the ingredient statement. But when it occurs as a byproduct of hydrolyzed protein, the FDA allows it to go unrecognized.

Although this happened back in 98, it never made mainstream attention. Years later, the findings of this scientist have been proven by many others.
Here is an article on another scientist, who recently tested GMOs and found them to be hazardous:
When scientist Hussein Kaoud decided to test genetically modified food on rats, he produced results that were extremely alarming and corroborate the conclusions that some international, independent scientists have reached.
Kaoud, of Cairo University’s Faculty of Veterinary Hygiene, fed nine groups of rats and mice different genetically modified foods — food made from organisms that have been biologically modified to incorporate genes with desired traits — and analyzed their physiological and psychological reactions.
The most common genetically engineered crops can resist herbicides or even create their own insecticides. Others have been manipulated in laboratories to enhance their tolerance to drought and water scarcity.
While some genes are extracted from another plant and inserted in the genome of the new super plant, the most commonly added gene is Bacillus thuringiensis, or Bt — a soil bacterium that naturally produces crystal proteins fatal to insects. When a Bt gene is inserted into corn or cotton, each plant in the field becomes an insecticide that causes insects’ stomachs to rupture when they feed on it.
Ninety-five percent of genetically modified crops planted worldwide come from Monsanto, the world’s leading biotechnology and genetic engineering company. The four main genetically modified crops are corn, soya, canola and cotton, and they have spread all over the world since their initial commercialization in 1995.

http://www.thedailysheeple.com/wp-co...4/images8.jpegFood can be medicine. Special broths can have a healing effect when drunk on a regular basis. Here is just one healing broth that will be especially good for peri-menopausal and menopausal women. Healing broths can be a good substitute for caffeine containing beverages which can become troublesome as a woman ages.
“Cur moriatur homo cui Salvia crescit in horto?”
Why should a man die who has sage in his garden?
Old English proverb
This powdered broth can be brought on a road trip or stored as in an emergency food. You can drink the broth by itself or simmer it in some bone broth.
3 parts dried wild-crafted fungus, powdered (choose from list below)
3 parts dried organic sage, ground (optional)
1-2 part sea salt, ground
1 part seaweed, powdered (chosen from list below)
Grind each individual ingredient by itself and in small amounts. Use a Vitamix machine, coffee grinder or food processor. The finer the grind the better the powder will dissolve in hot water or bone broth.
Store broth powder in a glass jar. Remember to date and label the jar with your chosen ingredients and the amounts used. Don’t be afraid to try different combinations. Actually, this is a good idea because you will get a better range of micro-nutrients.
Use one or two teaspoons in each cup of hot water or bone broth. Add more salt if you like a salty broth. Don’t be afraid to use sea salt to taste. If you are wondering if salt is safe to consume please read these two essays: The Salt of the Earth by Sally Fallon Morell and Salt and Our Health by Dr Morton Satin.
Choose your Fungus:
- Maitake has a complex immune stimulating effect and is reported to help the liver clear viral and environmental contamination. Maitake helps the body better absorb nutrients like zinc and copper.
- Shiitake has a rich, smoky flavor and is loaded with nutrients, essential amino acids and a highly potent antioxidant, l-ergothioneine. Shiitake contains lentinan which is reported to have a anti-tumor effect.
Choose your Seaweed:
It is reported that seaweed being naturally very high in iodine can improve a woman’s progesterone to estradiol ratios, decreasing estrogen dominance, by increases your free Triiodothyronine (T3).
Here is how different seaweeds can be used to help balance endocrine function. Choose your seaweed with these guidelines in mind or just use your favorite seaweed.
- Arame (Eisenia bycyclis) was traditionally used to reduce fibrocystic breasts, uterine fibroids, excessive bleeding and ovarian cysts. This seaweed can reduce acne and excessive facial hair common to Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS).
- Bladderwrack (Fucus vesiculosus) is an excellent adrenal adaptogen. It appears that the seaweed helps lengthen, short menstrual cycles, and relieves symptoms of Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) by supporting progesterone production when a woman is estrogen dominant. The seaweed is reported to help with osteoarthritis and inflammatory joint conditions.
- Dulse (Palmaria palmata), is very rich in iodine and iron. This seaweed can help with constipation and cyclic mastalgia. It is reported to have an antiviral action against the herpes virus.
- Irish Moss (Chondrus crispus) is traditional used for low sex drive. It is reported to support Triiodothyronine (T3) levels which is involved with the conversion of high-density lipoproteins into progesterone pathway and not into the cortisol pathway.
- Kelp (Ascophyllum nodosum) like all brown seaweeds is rich in alginate and can chelate radioactive materials and heavy metals from the body. The plant is very high in iodine and can help normalize adrenal, pituitary and thyroid health. It is reported to be a blood purifier and can relieve arthritic stiffness.
- Wakame (Alaria esculenta) can help with constipation and lower blood pressure. It is reported to have an antiviral effect against cytomegalovirus and herpes virus.

Meet the Man Called ‘Crazy’ By Doctors Who Cured His Own Colon Cancer
Anthony Gucciardi
April 12, 2013
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=1OyHanvUY28
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature...&v=1OyHanvUY28
Telling your mainstream medical doctor that you’d like to forfeit chemotherapy and instead adopt an organic lifestyle full of juicing and raw nutrition to treat your own cancer could lead him or her to label you as ‘insane’, but it could also save your life. In the case of one man with stage 3 colon cancer given a 60% chance to live for a maximum of five more years under chemotherapy, he decided to forfeit chemo and venture into a natural health lifestyle only to be more than satisfied 9 years later.
At 26 years of age, Chris faced a nightmare scenario that he simply did not know how to face. After a visit to the oncologist, Chris was diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer — and it had spread far beyond the colon itself. In addition to carrying a tumor the size of a golf ball in his large intestine that was continuing to grow, Chris’ cancer had spread to his lymph nodes. And it all happened two weeks before Chris was preparing to celebrate Christmas with his family.
This is the point in which mainstream doctors pressure patients into immediate and expensive action, decrying ‘alternative’ therapies as baseless and downright dangerous. For Chris, he faced the exact same scenario. At first, he succumbed to the wishes of the doctor and decided to go in for surgery.
Read: Chinese Plant Compound Wipes out Cancer in 40 Days, Says New Research
He was then given a 60% chance to experience up to 5 years more of his life, a life which included his wife and children. This is particularly strange as chemotherapy is not generally even used for such cancers, but for whatever reason Chris’ doctor was pursuing it. At this point, Chris had enough. Doing his own research into the reality behind cancer’s formation and alternative options, Chris told his doctor that he was going to give the route of natural health a chance. A route that puts nutrition and lifestyle far ahead of medical intervention, documenting how nutrition is actually at the heart of virtually all disease.
This was simply unacceptable to Chris’ oncologist, who at one point had told him it really didn’t matter what he ate after his initial surgery (and he was actually served Sloppy Joe after the surgery). Chris was labeled as a nutjob by the doctor, who discounted the natural route as nothing more than a joke. Because after all, diet plays no role in the health of the body, right?
Nine years later, Chris is now alive and healthy with his wife and two daughters thanks to his rigorous natural health lifestyle and raw food diet. His story has been seen by thousands on Youtube, and most recently has gone viral on the GreenMedInfoTV website. In his own words from his blog:
Anthony Gucciardi’s article first appeared at NaturalSociety.com.
“The human body is intelligently designed to heal itself, and given the proper nutrients and care, it will. Despite what doctors may have told you, you have options. You have the power to transform your health. If I did it, you can too!”
