HAMILTON — Three illegal immigrants were apprehended in Chicago and charged in connection with the death of a Middletown resident who was killed in Hamilton on July 1, police said.

Jesus Alcala Nava, 23, Juan Antonio Riverol Dominguez, 26, and Jesus Linares Dominguez, all from Mexico, were apprehended in Chicago in connection in the death of Mario Anjeles Rios, 23, of Middletown, according to authorities.

Nava has been charged in the murder of Rios who, according to police, was stabbed in the arm and in the back around 2 a.m July 1. He was approached by a group of men after he was involved in an argument with his girlfriend on Ludlow Street where the incident took place. The other two men have been charged with obstructing justice.

Authorities said Nava used a large knife and cut Rios on the right forearm and then stabbed him in the back.

Police said Rios was also an illegal immigrant, which made solving the case difficult.

“Not only were we dealing with the victim being an illegal, the three suspects were illegal,” said Hamilton Police Lt. Scott Scrimizzi. “In addition to having problems with that, we weren’t even at the scene — so we had to work from the hospital backwards and the guys did an outstanding job.”

The incident was not reported to police until Rios arrived at the hospital. He was later taken by medical helicopter to University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Officials from the U.S. Department of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the Findlay Police Department, the Chicago Police Department and the Butler County Prosecutors Office all assisted the HPD in apprehending the suspects.

The three men are being held in the Cook County, Ill., jail awaiting an extradition hearing.

HAMILTON — Three illegal immigrants have been indicted in connection with the July death of a Middletown man during a domestic dispute in Hamilton.

A Butler County grand jury, on Wednesday, indicted Jesus Alcala-Nava, 23, on one count each of murder and tampering with evidence involving the stabbing death of Mario Anjeles Rios, also 23.

Two other men, Juana Antonia Riverol-Dominguez, 26, and Jesus Linares-Dominguez, 24, have also been indicted on two counts each of obstructing justice.

According to Hamilton police, Rios was approached by a group of men in the 600 block of Ludlow Street shortly after an argument with his girlfriend.

Authorities said Alcala-Nava used a large knife and cut Rios on the right forearm and then stabbed him in the back. The incident happened about 2 a.m. on July 1.

The incident was not reported to police until Rios arrived at an area hospital. He was later taken by medical helicopter to University Hospital in Cincinnati where he was pronounced dead.

According to police, all three men are illegal immigrants from Mexico.

HAMILTON — Two of three suspected illegal immigrants charged in connection with the July 1 death of a Middletown man pleaded not guilty during separate arraignments Wednesday in Butler County Common Pleas Court.

Jesus Alcala-Nava, 23, stood quietly as a language interpreter translated and read aloud, in Spanish, an indictment charging him with one count each of murder and tampering with evidence in the stabbing death of Mario Anjeles Rios, also 23.

Likewise, Jesus Linares-Dominguez, 24, listened intently as the same interpreter translated and read aloud an indictment charging him with two counts of obstructing justice.

A third man, Juan Antonio Riverol-Dominguez, 26, also was indicted on two counts of obstructing justice and is scheduled for arraignment today.

Common Pleas Magistrate Robert Krebs set separate dates for plea or trial setting hearings before Common Pleas Court Judge Andrew Nastoff.

According to Hamilton police, Rios was approached by a group of men in the 600 block of Ludlow Street shortly after an argument with his girlfriend.

Authorities said Alcala-Nava used a large knife and cut Rios on the right forearm and then stabbed him in the back.

According to police, all three suspects are illegal immigrants from Mexico and were living at a residence on Exeter Avenue.

Alcala-Nava is being held, without bond, in the Butler County Jail. Linares-Dominguez and Riverol-Dominguez are being held in lieu of $200,000 bond each.

    Hearing delayed in stabbing case
    By Mary Lolli

HAMILTON — A pretrial hearing for a suspected illegal immigrant charged in the stabbing death of a Middletown man was continued Friday to give the defense attorney time to determine whether an audio tape destroyed by police contained any information important to the case.

Butler County Common Pleas Court Judge Andrew Nastoff agreed to continue the plea or trial setting hearing for Jesus Alcala-Nava to Oct. 6 so that defense attorney Kenneth Crehan could sort out conflicting information about the destroyed audio tape.

Crehan also requested additional time to have Alcala-Nava's statement to police translated into English so that he could study it.

Alcala-Nava, 23, is charged with murder and tampering with evidence, in the July 1 stabbing death of Mario Anjeles Rios, also 23, of Middletown.

According to Hamilton police, Rios was approached by a group of men in the 600 block of Ludlow Street shortly after an argument with his girlfriend.

Authorities said Alcala-Nava used a knife to cut Rios on the right forearm, then stabbed him in the back.

Nava earlier pleaded not guilty to the charges, as did co-defendants Juan Antonio Riverol-Dominguez, 26, and Jesus Linares-Dominguez, 24, both charged with two counts each of obstructing justice.

According to police, all three men are illegal immigrants from Mexico and were living at an Exeter Avenue home at the time of the killing.

The three fled after the stabbing, but were caught in Chicago July 13.

Crehan told Nastoff on Friday that Hamilton police had indicated they destroyed an audio tape relative to police activity the night of the stabbing.

But assistant prosecutor Lee Oldendick said police had turned over all the audio tapes relative to the stabbing and that those were limited to radio transmissions between the

dispatch center and the responding police officers.

"There was no 9-1-1 call made in this case," Oldendick said.

Still, Crehan said he needed time to determine what was contained on the tapes "destroyed" by police.

"If it was nothing, then it was nothing," he said. "But I'd like a chance to find out."

Additionally, because Alcala-Nava doesn't speak English, his police interrogation was done in Spanish and Crehan wanted time to have the interrogation transcript translated into English.

In addition to continuing the hearing, Nastoff approved spending up to $500 for translation services regarding the interrogation transcript.

Alcala-Nava is being held in the Butler County Jail without bond.

    BUTLER COUNTY COMMON PLEAS COURT

Illegal immigrant pleads guilty to involuntary manslaughter
Prosecutor: Middletown man stabbed, killed by Mexican national after argument with his girlfriend in Hamilton.

HAMILTON — An illegal immigrant charged with murder in the stabbing death of a Middletown man last summer pleaded guilty to a lesser charge Friday afternoon in Butler County Common Pleas Court.

Jesus Alcala-Nava, 23, was scheduled to go to trial Monday in Judge Andrew Nastoff's courtroom, but instead entered a guilty plea to involuntary manslaughter and tampering with evidence in the July 1 death of Mario Anjeles Rios, also 23, of Middletown, according to Assistant Butler County Prosecutor Lee Oldendick.

According to Hamilton police, Rios was approached by a group of men in the 600 block of Ludlow Street in Hamilton shortly after an argument with his girlfriend.

Authorities said Alcala-Nava used a knife to cut Rios on the right forearm, then stabbed him in the back.

Co-defendants Juan Antonio Riverol-Dominguez, 26, and Jesus Linares-Dominguez, 24, both were charged with two counts each of obstructing justice for assisting Alcala-Nava in fleeing the state after the incident. The three fled after the stabbing, but were caught in Chicago on July 13.

According to police, all three men are illegal immigrants from Mexico and were living at an Exeter Avenue home in Hamilton at the time of the killing.

Oldendick said Riverol-Dominguez and Linares-Dominguez both pleaded last week and agreed to testify against Alcala-Nava.

"I think (Alcala-Nava) then thought he should take the plea," Oldendick said.

Alcala-Nava is scheduled to be sentenced March 16. He faces up to 15 years in prison. Oldendick said the prison sentence will be served before the U.S. Department of Immigration and Customs Enforcement considers him for deportation.
