HOLIDAY, Fla. (AP) — Authorities say a Mexican immigrant is accused of using the stolen identity of a Rio Grande Valley police officer for more than a decade.

Pasco County Sheriff's deputies say 51-year-old Sergio Morales Esquivel turned himself in to authorities on Monday.

Deputies say Esquivel broke into the car of Jorge Luis Moreno and stole his wallet in the late 1990s. Moreno lives in Edinburg.

The St. Petersburg Times reports Moreno learned of the identity theft when he was recently denied a car loan. He looked at his credit report and found a $22,683 loan taken out in his name in Pasco County.

Deputies say U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement authorities have been notified. Esquivel is being held without bail. No attorney is listed on jail records
