Thought that illegal immigration is a US problem only?

You would figure that other countries would look at our mess and try to stop their illegal immigration problems before they get out of hand, but it seems that many european countries are facing the same problems.

"[i]Greece Continues to Struggle with Illegal Immigration
The dramatic increase in illegal immigration in Greece has been of great concern over the past few years, but 2009 is proving to be its worst yet. The Greek government has made the news in mostly bad light several times this year regarding their handling of the vast illegal immigration problem. Accusations range from ignoring human rights and asylum seekers to blatant racism. The Greek government has maintained that they are simply overwhelmed by the huge numbers of illegal immigrants and are trying their best to handle the problem appropriately. Meanwhile, Greece is suffering from economic, social and cultural implications caused by the influx of people into their communities.

One of the most radical accusations made headlines recently. A small number of independent Greek organizations are now claiming that it is Turkey who is causing their illegal immigration problems. Turkey previously has been accused of arranging for smuggling of individuals into Greece and also for arranging for a ‘facilitator’ for the immigrants to stay with, once in Greece. This facilitator will help to keep the illegal immigrant hidden from Greek police and also set up transportation into other European countries. Now, Turkey is being accused of secretly orchestrating the entire immigration problem. Apparently, some feel that they planned this illegal immigration problem in attempt to destabilize the Greek economy. Others feel that this accusation is wildly inaccurate.

In the past few months especially, Greece and Turkey have been basically bouncing responsibility for the problem between themselves. Greek authorities blame the Turkish and the Turkish respond by blaming the Greeks. Both have received harsh criticism for refusal to accept responsibility and lack of cooperation. Many members of the international community feel that it is essential for the two nations to work together if they want the problem solved.

Greek Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis has repeated his calls to the European Union for increased support. So far the EU has provided some support via equipment and personnel to assist at detainment centers. They are also in the process of passing new legislation that will support stricter Greek immigration policies. Over 20 additional nations have also provided aid to the Greeks.

The Greek government has too taken steps to combat the problem by passing new laws allowing for lengthened detainment and/ or easier deportation of illegal immigrants. Also, the third group of individuals was recently deported to Pakistan and Afghanistan, numbering about 85. Both of these practices are being considered controversial by human rights groups.

The EU has also decided to list the problem in Greece as a high priority for Frontex, their new border agency, located in Warsaw Poland. “The traffickers are getting smarter, we have to work harder.â€

Yes this has been going on for a long time, I believe it is called "globalization" and of course people are not learning from each other nor have they paid attention like us until it is almost too late. The economy around the world and lack of jobs is what is waking most people up. All Industrialized nations are in peril of becoming 3rd world nations.
