Arizona business leaders derided a new state law that punishes employers who hire illegal immigrants as racist and said it would drive Hispanic workers out of the state and could cost legal workers their jobs and livelihoods.
Wake Up Arizona — new business group opposed to the state sanctions bill — said the new law discriminates against Hispanic and Mexican workers, and legitimate businesses could be closed or put of operation if they mistakenly hire illegals.
Wake Up Arizona chairman Mac Magruder (a McDonald’s franchise owner) and other members of the business effort also said some backers of the sanctions bill, including State Rep. Russell Pearce, R-Mesa, backed racist and anti-Mexican policies. “You can’t reason with hatred,â€
