Whittier area students from Pioneer, California and Whittier high
schools walked out of classes to protest the proposed federal
immigration bill March 27, 2006. The protestors put up the Mexican flag
over the American flag flying upside down at Montebello High.

Wow the up side down flag flying is causing a lot of controversy.


PENDER COUNTY -- The flag flying on a man's property in Pender County is causing a lot of controversy.

Donald Sullivan is a retired Lieutenant Colonel in the Air Force Reserve and he isn't very happy with the United States government. That's why he's flying his American flag flying upside down.

As you might imagine, the sight of our nation's flag flying upside-down has really upset a lot of people. In fact, when we went out to Hampstead to talk to Mr. Sullivan Thursday, someone had knocked down his flag pole and stolen the American flag.

Mr. Sullivan had had to call the sheriff.

The US flag was flying beneath the Confederate flag.

Flying the American flag upside down is a sign of distress and Mr. Sullivan says he couldn't be more distressed over the way our government is running our country.

"Right now the most immediate threat to survival as we know it in this country is illegal immigration," Sullivan said. "Within the next 20 years, unless we make some drastic changes, we'll destroy this country as we know it. It will be a third-world economy, a third-world military, a third-world government and we'll be just worthless."

Mr. Sullivan has issues with everything from federal taxes to permit requirements for carrying weapons. But his biggest concern is illegal immigration.

He recently spent time down in Arizona on the Minute Men project, serving as a volunteer to guard our nation's borders against illegal aliens.

Mr. Sullivan's neighbors are really upset about his controversial display. They say it's a disgrace no matter what his issues are with the government.
