Retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson just achieved a milestone in the Republican presidential primary: edging front-runner Donald Trump in a notable poll.

Quinnipiac University released a new Iowa survey on Thursday that found Carson leading Trump 28% to 20% among likely caucus-goers.

Trump has led almost every national and state-based poll since he surged to the top of the crowded field over the summer, and he has continued to hold decisive leads in several new polls out this week.

But Carson has been nipping at his heels.

"It's Ben Carson's turn in the spotlight," Quinnipiac pollster Peter Brown said in a statement on the Iowa results.

"As they've been pondering for six months, many in the political world still are trying to understand Carson's appeal and how someone who seems to be operating outside the traditional news media/political environment is doing so well among the most conservative GOP voters."

Brown pointed to Carson's support among Iowa's "sizeable white, evangelical Christian community," where he led Trump 36% to 17%.

Historically, socially conservative and openly religious candidates have done well in Iowa, the first caucus state on the 2016 slate.

Former Sen. Rick Santorum (R-Pennsylvania), a devout Catholic, won the state in 2012. Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee (R), a Southern Baptist minister who is running again this year, won the state in 2008. Carson attends a Seventh-day Adventist church and frequently invokes his faith on the campaign trail.

And Carson is widely liked among Republican voters, according to the Quinnipiac poll and others.

"Those who know Carson seem to like him," Brown added. "He has an almost unheard of 84-10 percent favorability rating among likely Republican caucus-goers, compared to Trump's 53-43 percent rating. To borrow the line from Madison Avenue, 'Almost no one doesn't like Ben Carson.'"

After Carson and Trump, Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Florida) grabbed the third-place spot in the poll, with 13% support among likely caucus-goers. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) followed him with 10%. Sen. Rand Paul (R-Kentucky) had 6%, while former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush (R) and former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina both tied at 5%.

That's very surprising. I think something is off in their poll. Awhile back there was another poll that was way off, an IBD/Tipp poll. In any event, Trump supporters need to show up in big numbers at the Iowa caucuses. It's very important to have a large attendance.

Not buying this lone poll result.

I don't believe the poll, too many forces at work. Lou Dobbs gives an excellent assessment.

One major reason for the jump in numbers is Carson’s showing among women. Female voters gave Carson a 33-13 percent lead over Trump.

The poll also shows that Carson connects with voters at a personal level, with 87 percent of likely GOP Iowa Caucus participants saying Carson cares about their needs and problems. That was the highest level of any GOP candidate.

Carson has focused his campaign on faith and values, an approach that resonates with Iowa voters. The Quinnipiac poll asked likely GOP voters what was most important in a candidate. Having shared values was the most important characteristic for 28 percent of those polled; being honest and trustworthy was most important to 23 percent.

In both cases, Carson was voters’ choice as 84 percent said he shares their values and 89 percent say he is honest and trustworthy, topping the GOP field for both qualities.

The Quinnipiac poll showed that Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla. placed third at 13 percent. Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas placed fourth at 10 percent. Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky. was at 6 percent. Carly Fiorina and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush were at 5 percent each. No other candidate topped 3 percent.

Not sure what to make of that statement, but it doesn't sound like a proper statement from someone who is in charge of the poll.

Third in the Oct. 14-20 poll was Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., at 13 percent, followed by Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, at 10 percent.

Isn't that interesting that this group of people polled put social issues such as abortion and same-sex marriage above the needs of the American People and the American Nation? This doesn't make sense to me. I don't believe this poll properly represents the majority of the people of Iowa, which confirms further that there was something wrong with the poll and not some glaring difference of opinion among Iowa Republican caucus folks than Republicans in any other state.

Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson has moved into a dominant position in Iowa, surpassing former front-runner Donald Trump as evangelical Christians begin to coalesce around him in the state that will cast the first 2016 nomination ballots.

A new Bloomberg Politics/Des Moines Register Iowa Poll shows the retired neurosurgeon is backed by 28 percent of likely Republican caucus participants, up 10 percentage points since late August. Trump is supported by 19 percent, down 4 points.

Those planning to caucus for Carson are drawn to his personal story and his status as a non-career politician, the poll shows, and they view him as someone who approaches issues with common sense and with guidance from his faith in God.

“His standing has improved in every way pollsters traditionally measure,” said J. Ann Selzer, president of West Des Moines-based Selzer & Co., which conducted the poll. “This might be a wake-up for Donald Trump.”

Yes, I knew they were an Anti-Trump newspaper, so I bet they influenced the poll.

The "Establishment" is hard at work trying to fix the polls to make Trump look bad.
