Pat Buchanan To Sean Hannity: Illegal Aliens ‘Ought To Be In The Shadows!’

On Thursday’s Sean Hannity Show radio program, Pat Buchanan, longtime conservative commentator and author, discussed the ‘Gang of 8′ immigration reform bill with host Sean Hannity.

Clearly stating, “I’m not for it,” Buchanan wondered why the Republican party has broken away from its platform against amnesty, remarking: “I don’t know what has changed, other than the fear in the Republican party that the Hispanics voted against them – they only got 27% [in the 2012 election] – because they’re against amnesty. I don’t believe that’s the reason [for the vote results]. This cutting and running we’re seeing on the part of Republicans on a lot of issues – I don’t think it’s very appealing.”

Hannity noted he has spent a great deal of time interviewing key lawmakers regarding this bill and summarized several of Senator Marco Rubio‘s pitch points concerning the bill. Buchanan challenged the claims, saying:

'As soon as this bill passes, every illegal alien in this country is going to know he’s not going to be apprehended, he’s not going to be sent back, there won’t be ‘going after’ the businesses that hired him – they’re basically home free. And when that happens, that message is going to go out to the world and we will have, in effect, the second de-facto amnesty… and you’re going to get another stampede to the American border. People around the world will say: ‘The American people are incapable of defending the borders of the United States – if you want to go there, get in there, keep your nose clean, and you become a citizen, you can cut right ahead of the line because millions and millions have already done it.’

Hannity noted that Buchanan is 100% correct that the government has “a duty and obligation to control our borders and the law already demands that they do it but they don’t follow the law…. What the Republicans are doing is saying: ‘Alright, we’re going to have mandatory triggers and then we will deal with the 11 million [undocumented immigrants]… There’s never been a move in the Republicans to say: ‘You didn’t respect our laws and our sovereignty, you have to go home.’ Nobody’s done it.”

Discussing how the illegal immigration problem was already rampant when he ran for president in 1993, Buchanan bemoaned the fact that nothing was done and we now have millions more undocumented immigrants.

With Hannity noting that, if we follow the laws we already have and do not pass an immigration bill, we still have 11 or 12 million undocumented immigrants, Buchanan shot back:

'Why do you have to do anything? What is this nonsense that ‘they’re in the shadows’? With due respect, they ought to be in the shadows! They’ve broken the law to get into the country…. Do nothing!… You [the Republican party] don’t have bribe, you don’t have to give up your principled positions… in order to get Barack Obama to do his duty and defend the border!’

When Buchanan referenced one of his earlier books, Hannity jokingly interrupted: “By the way, was this one of your controversial books or was this one of your less controversial books?” with Buchanan teasing: “I think it’s one that’s been burned!”

Discussing the possibility of deportation and such under President Eisenhower, Buchanan opined that there are “enough” that would support deportation but cautioned there is “no doubt those folks are diminishing in number” because “political correctness has… wormed its way into the heart and soul of the Republican party.”

Hannity noted that perhaps that explains the reasoning behind this bill: “To prevent a third wave [of illegal immigration], we’ve got to get the full border security so it doesn’t happen again,” with a highly doubtful Buchanan interrupting:

'And Obama? Say ‘cross our heart and hope to die, we’re gonna do all this and we haven’t been doing it?’ They’re going to believe ‘em? Let me tell you what’s gonna happen next: these folks that are on the [bill's] 10-year path to citizenship, once that’s taken care of the Democrats will say: ‘Well that’s outrageous, we ought to cut it to five years,’ Republicans will oppose it, and they’ll say; ‘You all are anti-Hispanic’ and the Republicans will capitulate again.

Hannity responded: “I gotta be honest: I don’t disagree with any of that scenario, unfortunately” noting that the problem he has is that the border is the “number one, national security vulnerability this country has and nobody is dealing with it from that standpoint.” Buchanan added the problem is not only that but also our “enormously generous social welfare system,” with “scores” of federal programs: “You got half the American people are now federal beneficiaries [with another] half paying no income taxes…. Most [undocumented immigrants] are very poor, they’re going to wind up on that welfare system and the deficit’s gonna get bigger and bigger and bigger.” Hannity agreed, cautioning that even though [the bill's proponents] are claming that won’t happen in the end what will be said is: “You don’t want to pay for poor children? They’re hungry, you’re going to deny them food?” with Buchanan agreeing with the scenario, adding: “Who’s going to deny them food stamps!”
