My April 10 Letter in 'USA Today' Re Illegal Aliens

In the April 10 edition of USA Today, the paper published a letter from me concerning a column by in-house columnist Raul Reyes. The subject: Illegal immigration, of course!

    The letter:

    Influx hurts the poorest

In his commentary about Cesar Chavez, Raul Reyes laments that gains achieved by Chavez on behalf of migrant farm workers have all but evaporated ("Chavez's hard-fought gains are eroding <http://www.usatoday.com/news/opinion/editorials/2006-03-30-chavez-edit_x.htm>," The Forum, March 31).

Reyes neglects to point out, however, what I believe is the primary reason for this reversal of fortunes: The massive flow of illegal aliens into the USA from Mexico.

With anywhere from 12 million to 20 million illegal immigrants currently here, and with many willing to work for below minimum wages, the pay scale and standard of living for those at the bottom of the food chain are significantly depressed.

For most of his life, Chavez acknowledged the damaging impact of illegal aliens and spoke openly against these unlawful invasions.

Responsible U.S. citizens in the Hispanic community should rally for greater security of American borders and stricter enforcement of immigration laws, rather than encourage more out-of-control immigration, which harms homeland security and the economic well-being of all Americans here legally.

Hispanics might be surprised at the support they would receive by taking a responsible position on illegal immigration and by waving the U.S. — rather than the Mexican — flag.

    Excellent letter!

The legal Hispanics are probably afraid to come out of the shadows themselves for fear of harrassment.

I have read recently that some Hispanics here legally feel threatened because of their obvious heritage. To them, I would say exactly the same thing I do to Muslims caught up in the anti-Muslim fervor:

Please use our wonderful free speech protection and let the American people know that you support that which is best for America. Speak out against extremisim and action harmful to US citizens.

You will be most welcome by doing so!

    Hear Ye! Hear Ye!!

Americans need to unite and that means ALL AMERICANS who care about America and the American People.

Hispanic Americans need to stand up and speak out and join all the millions of Americans trying to get our nation back on track for the benefit of all American Citizens, no matter their ethnic background or heritage.

We are Americans and that is all that matters.

Americans stick together; Americans work together; Americans build a nation together; Americans secure our nation; Americans defend our nation; and Americans enforce our laws.

    It's time Americans got "clubby".

Americans of Hispanic/Latino descent are Americans and shouldn't be intimidated because of the heritage -- it's the ILLEGAL'S that we are opposed to and if they fail to oppose them, then they are in fact supporting their unlawful acts.

Edmund Burke said "all that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing" these American citizens should not allow evil to triumph ... but they are probably intimidated by their church, but "To him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin" James 4:17 -- they should not let others make them to sin

Excellent letter! Last night, the local NBC affiliate did a piece on those who worked hard, spent years gaining US citizenship, and eventually got a little piece of the American dream by buying and running a small store type business. The immigrant spoke highly of his journey and was very proud of his gaining citizenship. He also said something about the pressure being placed upon him to close on 1 May in support of the "day without Immigrants". He stated he was a citizen and other should take a lesson from his proud journey. I thought it was excellently done and should be shared with every illegal...oh yeah, he spoke very good english and took pride in his progress with it!

    The frustration continues...
