Gov. Nikki Haley as the next U.N. ambassador?

Gov. Nikki Haley as the next U.N. ambassador?

By Gavin Jackson gjackson@postandcourier.com Updated 4 min ago (1)

COLUMBIA — Gov. Nikki Haley is said to be a leading candidate for ambassador to the United Nations after days of silence from President-elect Donald Trump’s transition team.

The latest came from sources familiar with ongoing Cabinet deliberations who spoke with The Wall Street Journal. Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, a Haley ally, is said to be Trump’s likely choice for secretary of state — a position Haley was previously rumored for last week.

The newest revelation comes after Haley’s face-to-face meeting with Trump at Trump Tower in New York on Thursday.

At an unrelated Statehouse press conference Monday, Haley gave no details about the meeting with Trump other than to say it was a private and they remain friends.

"We have had conversations," Haley said about her contact with Trump's team. "As long as the president continues to ask questions, I will continue to be supportive. We want a successful Trump transition and administration."

Similar to Romney, Haley was a critic of Trump for much of the 2016 campaign. She said Monday that she remains friends with Trump, but “when I see something that I’m uncomfortable with, I say it."

"I don't even think we took it as personal," Haley said about their exchanges.

If chosen, Haley would be the first woman and minority named in Trump's administration. The Cabinet position would require confirmation by the Senate.

While Haley lacks foreign policy, others see it as an asset and in line with Trump’s governing style. When early Trump supporter Lt. Gov. Henry McMaster was asked about Haley as a potential secretary of state he said, “It would be like how Mr. Trump is bringing fresh eyes to running our government.”

U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., supports Haley for a spot in the Trump administration and could even work closely with her as chairman of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on State and Foreign Operations.

“I think (Trump) should consider her for some prominent role,” he said last week, “because she is a Republican woman who is talented and has been a good governor.”

Since being elected the state's first female and first minority governor in 2010, Haley has taken at least eight trips to other countries for economic development purposes.

Haley, 44, has visited Germany most, taking three trips to the country with the headquarters for automaker BMW, which has its only U.S. plant in Greer. She visited Sweden twice with Volvo building its first North American auto plant in Berkeley County. She attended air shows in London and Paris as part of South Carolina landing Boeing's only jet manufacturing plant outside the Seattle area.

College of Charleston political science professor Gibbs Knotts said that experience, coupled with her executive experience, especially during crises, appears not to be lost on Trump.

Time as ambassador could also springboard her into other top positions later.

“She could help the Republicans expand their appeal,” Knotts said about future presidential races. “I think if a Senate seat opened up, she’d be a favorite, if that’s the direction she’d want to go."

Prior to becoming the current U.N. ambassador, Samantha Power served as special assistant to the president and senior director for multilateral affairs and human rights on the National Security Council staff at the White House.

Before that Power, 46, taught at Harvard University — the same school she got her law degree from — after graduating from Yale University.

Haley's office and the Trump transition team did not respond to requests for comment.

Sorry, but I oppose such an appointment. We need someone representing US at the United Nations whose convictions oppose illegal immigration and refugee programs as a response to stupid civil wars. We need someone who also understands the harm of free trade treason and massive immigration. Nikki is not such a person.

Forget Nikki Haley. Do not appoint based on gender. Just stop it. Appoint the best person. And Haley is not the best person, she's the wrong person to be involved in this administration.

Same with Mitt Romney. Kick 'em to the curb.

Hopefully Trump will appoint someone who has his beliefs and the people that elected him. The main stream media gets everything wrong they report gossip no real reporting anymore. I will believe it when Trump announces it.

    NO AMNESTY

Don't reward the criminal actions of millions of illegal aliens by giving them citizenship.

    Yeah, very disappointing.

One good thing to come of it is Henry McNaster will become Governor, a huge Trump Supporter, in fact, he's the one who submitted Haley as a candidate for something. So maybe there's an upside and reason we don't know about yet. I think the woman and daughter of immigrants thing which together with Besty DeVos as Secretary of Education will shut the press up on the diversity issue. Hope Ben Carson accepts HUD Secretary Position, he would do a great job.

If she is UN ambassador...she is out of the way...and Trump already said he is NOT funding the UN agenda! Smart man indeed.

Perhaps I give him too much credit but I don't think so. 1) The above quote is major - no more backstabbing from that branch 2) possibly squelches the left's gender politicization and 3) she's under his control, not Ryan's or Rubios's, etc.
