    Sen Judd Gregg R--NH

For those not able to be watching the debate on C-Span:

Sen. Judd Gregg is orating about how we will be shutting out immigrants with advanced degrees who can contribute something to our country by bringing in millions of unskilled people who have far less to contribute.

His point was that we already have a lottery system that is open to anyone, skills or none, to apply to come here legally. He said the Senate bill effectively allows unskilled people to bypass the lottery and simply participate in this amnesty program to get in line for citizenship.

He said our capacity to compete globally is directly related to our "brain power." We should be attracting the best and brightest among immigrants to come here and not millions of unskilled workers who will be granted amnesty simply because they have been here a few years illegally.

Sen. Lamar Alexander is expanding upon what Gregg offered in his oratory. Mr. Alexander pointed out that a large part of our success as an industrialized nation was because of our advances in math and science. It is in our interest, he said, to be importing the highly educated over the unskilled laborer.
