More Calls Needed to N.J. Assembly, Governor Over Tuition Aid for Illegal Aliens

Thanks to those of you who called the Governor and Assembly Members in opposition to legislation that would give illegal aliens in-state tuition rates and financial aid. You have made some progress but more calls are needed.

Gov. Christie announced he would veto the Senate-passed bill (S2479) because it would give financial aid to illegal aliens. He also opposes helping illegal aliens in private schools and the bill's lack of a sunset date. Christie says he cont inues to support so-called tuition equity for illegal aliens, however, and would sign a clean in-state tuition bill that reached his desk.

The Assembly's version (A4225) of the bill does not include financial aid but the measure's primary sponsor, Assemblyman Gordon Johnson, said he will try to move S2479 instead. That bill currently resides in the Assembly's Higher Education Committee. Johnson said he will try to find funds to cover financial aid for illegal aliens so that other students seeking assistance are not disenfranchised.

Please continue to call Members of the Higher Education Committee, your Assembly Member and Gov. Christie in oppositi on to tuition aid for illegal aliens.

Contacting the Assembly Higher Education Committee

Please call and email the below-noted Assembly Members with the message:

"Please oppose tuition aid legislation for illegal immigrants. At a time when higher education faces severe program cuts and students face tuition and fee increases, it makes no sense to give illegal immigrants in-state tuition or financial aid. Plus, recent polls on WKXW and NJ.com show an overwhelming majority of New Jerseyans oppose this legislation."

    Extra Talking Points

This legislation will result in tuition increases to cover millions of dollars in lost revenues. And if Assemblyman Johnson amends S2479 to prevent illegal immigrants from siphoning off financial aid meant for citizens, it will still shortchange other programs or increase taxes. Plus there are a fixed number of classroom seats, so passing the bill will foreclose the graduation potential of citizens.

With so many citizens and legal immigrants trying to attend New Jersey's public universities and with so many college graduates unable to find work, how can anyone support tuition aid for illegal immigrants? This is simply unfair to the hundreds of thousands of hard working New Jersey families who dream of a better life for their children.

Between 2010 and 2020, there are expected to be 19 million college graduates, but only 8.5 million jobs requiring a B.A. Right now, 48 percent of college grads who have been able to find a job are underemployed. Giving tuition aid to illegal immigrants will worsen the situation and anger taxpayers trying to help their own kids.

    Contacting Gov. Christie

Please Gov Christie call him (609-292-6000) using the message below. Also please consider using his online contact form:

"I am glad Gov. Christie said he'd veto the Senate tuition aid bill for illegal immigrants but upset that he still wants to strike a compromise with the legislature. Please tell him to veto S2479 or any in-state tuition bill that reaches his desk.

Democrats in the legislature are rushing legislation through as a political challenge to a potential presidential candidate. Don't take the bait. Presidential primary voters oppose financial aid for illegal immigrants. Just remember Rick Perry in 2012. And they will not like a candidate who endorsed tuition and tax increases to correct his bad judgment on tuition aid for illegal immigrants

Recent polls on WKXW and NJ.com show an overwhelming ma jority of New Jerseyans oppose in-state tuition for illegal immigrants. Please veto S2479.

Thanks in advance for your assistance!
