The One Mexican Border-Crossing Family Tancredo Likes ?

The One Mexican Border-Crossing Immigrant Family That Tancredo Likes? The Romneys
Our guest blogger is Henry Fernandez, a Senior Fellow at the Center for American Progress focusing on state and municipal policy.

Tom Tancredo, the only candidate for president from either party to declare himself in opposition to legal immigration, and to have a specific aversion to Mexican immigration, dropped out of the presidential race last week. Then he did something quite odd — he endorsed Mitt Romney, the only candidate whose father was born in Mexico and whose family made use of the porous border to immigrate between Mexico and the United States.

Tancredo made his endorsement because he was enamored by Romney’s recent — apparently hypocritical — conversion on immigration. Romney has been running ads across Iowa decrying what he now believes is the horrible impact of “illegal immigrants.â€

Why do these people always twist things. No one is against legal immigration, but this Hispanic writer wants everyone to think it. This type of tactic is just one of their traits.

The Romney family entered the United States legally they did not hide themselves from the United States government.
I support enforcement and see its lack as bad for the 3rd World as well. Remittances are now mostly spent on consumption not production assets. Join our efforts to Secure America's Borders and End Illegal Immigration by Joining ALIPAC's E-Mail Alerts network (CLICK HERE)

They were born to American citizens, although in Mexico. When the Mormons left Nauvoo, they were crossing Iowa and leaving the United States. The treaty of Guadaloupe-Hidalgo brought the Mormon state of Deseret (Utah and parts of Idaho, Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico, etc.) back into the United States. Before long the US Army was bearing down on them as they were considered rebellious, and newspaper editorials proclaimed against the 'twin relics of barbarism' (polygamy and slavery) that were still found in the US. Utah was ruled by outsiders sent in, and they could not achieve statehood in this condition of conflict. The Edmunds-Tucker act in particular threatened to destroy the church. The 1890 Mormon Manifesto ending polygamy simply said "to refrain from contracting any marriage forbidden by the law of the land." Existing polygamous marriages were not disolved. The Second Manifesto would not be issued until 1904, and it was more explicit. Nevertheless, many Mormons thought it wise to remove themselves beyond the enforcement of the Manifesto or any sympathetic laws. A large number went and settled in Mexico and contracted marriages there and bore children. Those children were nevertheless the offspring of American citizens. The Pancho Villa uprising drove many (not all) of the 'Mexican' Mormons back to the US where they tried to keep a low profile, sometimes divorcing, often not.

If anything the Romneys did was illegal, it was moving to Mexico. They were, and remained Americans with the right to repatriate.

Sounds like a double standard to me.
