Corker for President: Taking on Trump to save the world

The top foreign-policy Republican in the U.S. Senate just called Donald Trump akin to a wild animal in need of taming — and said most of his colleagues share that alarming, and essentially irrefutable, assessment.

May the blunt words by onetime Trump ally Bob Corker inspire any number of his fellow Republicans to show more backbone on a daily basis, and to start laying the foundation to challenge the President in the 2020 GOP primaries.

The only fix for a commander in chief who is treating his immensely powerful office like “a reality show” is a new commander in chief.

Sunday evening, after the senator and President traded insults on Twitter, Corker said he feared Trump’s impulsiveness on the world stage might put the planet “on the path to World War III.”

He could have been referring to any of a few dozen mercurial outbursts, but likely the trigger was a Saturday tweet in which Trump asserted that “only one thing will work” to rein in North Korea — a statement that could only be read as a direct threat to strike Pyongyang militarily.

“Every single day at the White House,” Corker said, “it’s a situation of trying to contain him.”

Corker punctuated this by telling the Times that “except for a few people, the vast majority of our caucus” — meaning, of the Senate’s 52 Republicans — “understands what we’re dealing with here.”

The GOP has long purported to stand for calm and principled leadership on the world stage. If it has any hope of continuing to offer itself as a steady hand on the tiller, more Republicans must follow Corker — rhetorically and, ultimately, electorally.
