When Democratic National Committee operatives describe something as "undemocratic," they mean it's not good for the Democratic Party.
"We believe that we should expand democracy -- that expanding democracy is good for the nation; it is good for our party," Democratic National Committee spokesman Mo Elleithee told reporters during a conference call in which he attacked "undemocratic" Republican voter ID laws and other state-level election laws.
The DNC operatives offered several platitudes about the importance of voting during the call, which was scheduled apropos of a New York Times story on Republican-supported election laws, but they kept slipping up and mentioning their ulterior concern.

"The fundamental notion is that lower turnout means that we'll lose, and so we've got to drive it up as much as possible," Elleithee said.
Maggie Toulouse Oliver, a Democratic candidate for New Mexico Secretary of State, explained that she believes telling voters that Republicans are trying to deprive them of the right to vote could motivate Democratic voters to go to the polls this year.
Referring to a list of people whose voting eligibility was question by the state government, she said that "those individuals in particular are going to be targeted by me or by other campaigns saying, you know, 'Did you know that your right to vote was almost taken away?' "
I think actually, what could end up happening is that what happens as a result of these efforts, that these efforts completely backfire, especially with the Hispanic and Latino community, and that especially we could see increased and improved turnout as a result of that, in response to that," Toulouse Oliver said.
