Thread: Depressing -town known underground as 'illegal friendly'...

I read this on our town site today and found it very depressing to say the least. Unless our town enacts the Hazleton ordinance I don't see this situation getting any better. I think I'm going to email a copy of this to the mayor, aldermen, etc... good idea? bad idea? Years ago I saw a 60 minutes episode that showed a "Go to Waukegan" sign on a Mexican signpost. Years later now...

I think I can shed a bit of light on that.....
I go to a very nice town, Victoria, Texas, often to see a specialist doctor there. So nice I should have moved there. There are many AMERICANS of hispanic race there that are my nurses, and we got to talking. When asked where I was from (since I did not have the Texas accent!) I replied, "Waukegan, IL" Well, let me tell you, they both looked at each other in horror, and of course I asked why. Well, they said, let's all go for lunch and we'll tell you.

At lunch, it turns out Waukegan, IL, is VERY well known in the 'underground' illegal alien culture for being illegal "friendly"!
They knew about the lawsuit that was brought against Waukegan by the illegals, and so do thousands of aliens. They also informed me that Waukegan is also known for "looking the other way", unlike the town of Victoria, TX. To be very honest, these very same American citizens of hispanic race do not like the illegals as must as you and I! Both of my nurses said, "Our grandparents made it a priority and thought it an honor" to become a full fledged citizen, legal, and speak English fluently. By the way, these two wonderful nurses spoke English without even a hint of an accent. They look upon the alien invaders as a problem, and the authorities there just wait for illegals who come through their town and deal with them rather harshly!
I also ran into other nice folks there, that once again, asked me where I was from due to my non-Texas accent, and when I said Waukegan, they exclaimed "Oh that's where the illegal mexicans go!" or "my cousin from mexico lives there".

I swear upon my very life that this is a true statement.

Oh, almost forgot: there is also an 'underground' illegal newspaper distributed in Mexico as well as signs that advertise Waukegan. Not advertisement by our city officials, but by the mexicans who do this newspaper up.

May I ask when this invasion of illegals started in your area and what preciptated it? What do you think attracted them to come there in the first place?

Excellent question noyoucannot. I just went back to my town board and posted your questions. I'll get back to you. I do know that two Mexican towns basically transplanted themselves here; Tonatico and La Puerta. We also have 5,000 Hondurans here. Below are two posts from my town's board.

There are two parts. You will find them about half way down the page.

Warning! Listening to this may make you ill. Especially the singing of the alphabet song in part two of the story. I'm no expert in language skills but even I know that kids pick up songs very easy no matter what language. They could as easily learn the alphabet song in english. Also the statistics of 80% latino in grade school and 90% in kindergarten. Not very diverse.

You'll love this:
I heard Waukegan offered a free preschool program so...
I tried to enroll my 4 year old at Whittier.
She was denied enrollment because she did not speak Spanish.

They were not interested in trying to teach an English speaking child Spanish.



Now DO YOU SEE WHY I'M SO ANGRY?
I believe it is my tax money I am being denied.
