    Oregon's OFIR update

    OFIR members and supporters:

On Tuesday the U. S. Senate is going to begin again debating the AMNESTY bill, (S. 134.
We need everyone to start up the phone calls, faxes, etc. again to Senate offices.

Call as many senators as you can. Give special consideration to calling Senators Larry Craig (R-ID), Mike Crapo (R-ID), Barbara Boxer (D-CA), Diane Feinstein (D-CA), Patty Murray (D-WA) and Maria Cantwell (D-WA). The phone numbers are listed below. Crapo has opposed amnesty. Craig has been a terrible disappointment. Boxer voted against Cloture and is a huge swing vote for us. Murray, Cantwell and Feinstein all have supported the amnesty bill and they need to hear from everyone. Don't forget Senator Smith and Wyden.

Good news over the weekend. A number of members attended the Ron Wyden town hall meetings and had the time to question him directly about the Senate amnesty bill. He should know by now most Oregonians oppose the amnesty bill. Wyden unfortunately has voted for amnesty in the past. At the Gordon Smith fund raising party Saturday night, Sen. Smith once again voiced his opposition the amnesty bill. Everyone should take great pride in his move to our side.

Lee Vasche, OFIR PAC Secretary, had a great op-ed piece in the Statesman- Journal.

Key points of the Amnesty bill.

If passed it would give immediate amnesty for nearly all of the 12-20 million illegal aliens in the country.
    Triple the rate of chain migration from around 250,000 a year to around 750,000 a year for about a decade;
Create new flows of 200,000 temporary" foreign workers every year, who will bring their families and have anchor babies who will qualify for citizenship. They will receive the new "Y" Visa. Guest workers would be limited to three two-year terms, and they'd have to spend at least a year outside the United States between each term. Temporary workers will be allowed to bring immediate family members if they can support them financially and they have health insurance
Illegal aliens will be given six months to apply for a "Z" visa. However they can still remain in the U.S. indefinitely even if they do not apply for a "Z" visa.
Federal officials will have only 24 hours to do a security and criminal background check. If the fingerprints don't kick up a criminal record in the first 24 hours -- get instant legalization papers. One they get those papers, they can stay in the United States the rest of their lives, whether or not they ever decide to apply for a Z-visa or green card.
Illegal alien gang members will be given a Z visa if they are willing to renounce "gangs."
Illegal aliens will not be required to pay back taxes.
After the bill is passed and if an ICE agent would happen to apprehend an illegal alien in our country, the ICE agent would have to help the illegal alien fill out an application for a Z visa. Only if the illegal alien refused to fill out the form could he be deported.
Illegal aliens would be able to receive "in-state tuition rates," under the Dream Act provisions of the bill. American citizens from other states would not be eligible.
Employers who have hired illegal aliens and not passed on tax requirements to either the illegal alien and the IRS would be amnestied.

    S. 1348 puts an illegal alien into a super class of an American.

THEY SAY: This is not an amnesty and not instant citizenship.

They are correct that this is not instant citizenship (which might not come for 18 years). But it IS "instant legalization" that allows legal residence and work in the U.S.

Immediately after the amnesty bill is signed into law, all 12-20 million illegal aliens can sign up, give their fingerprints and -- or eventually citizenship (unless they are found later to be terrorists or fail to meet a few obscure criteria that may or may not ever be enforced).

We need to continue to call Senate offices and ask them if they think that any of the above provisions of the bill are in the best interests of American citizens.

Recently 6 Islamic terrorists were arrested in New Jersey for planning an attack on soldiers stationed at Fort Dix. 3 of the terrorists were illegal aliens, 2 were in the U.S. on Green cards. Under the new amnesty bill all 5 would be granted amnesty.

Muhammad Atta and a number of the 9/11 terrorists would have been granted instant legalization under this bill if they had not yet flown planes into the World Trade Center and Pentagon.

Robert Rector of the Heritage Foundation testified this week at the House Judicial Committee. He stated that the cost of comprehensive immigration reform, (AMNESTY), to American taxpayers would be $2.5 trillion. The $2.5 trillion is the net cost after you figure in any taxes illegal aliens might pay and the cost for their retirement to American taxpayers.

That's great but will he vote No on cloture?

Surprisingly he did this last time, so it sounds as though he will again. He said that it was no less than amnesty and this is surprising to almost all Oregonians as Gordon Smith has always been a fence rider, trying to please both sides. We're hopeful he'll stand his ground, of course with as many calls from as many people as possible to encourage him to.
