Colorado Gov. Bill Ritter, here announcing his plans to leave office this month, is planning to implement Secure Communities, sources tell the Associated Press.
The controversial Secure Communities program may be coming to Colorado.
Outgoing Gov. Bill Ritter, who is leaving office Jan. 11, is reportedly ready to have the state participate in the federal program. The Associated Press is reporting that Colorado may implement the controversial plan, with modifications, on Tuesday.
It wasn't immediately known what the modifications to the program would be.
The AP's sources spoke on the condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to speak before the announcement.
Ritter's spokesperson could not be reached for comment by the AP.
Secure Communities uses fingerprints to check a person's immigration status during jail bookings. The program is in place in 35 states.
Some 47,000 people have been deported from October 2008 to July 2010, according to federal statistics.
Immigrant advocacy groups worry the program will lead to racial profiling.
Based on reporting by the Associated Press.
