While vacationing in Vail...
I keep asking myself: Where are all the locals?
All I hear is Spanish and occasional Portuguese.
I talked to a shuttle driver, who is from Mexico, he said
that most of his co-workers are from Mexico, Argentina and
Brazil. Those are not the international visitors who come
to spend their money here.
I know that some instructors from New Zealand and Europe come
here under a seasonal work visa but what
about all the others who work in shops, restaurants, lifts,
construction, etc.
To make things worse all signs around the mountains are
posted in English and Spanish.
And I thought I would get away from it all.

All up and down I-70. The McDonalds in Idaho Springs, the Burger King in Dumont. All of a sudden, it's Mexico.

Cool. I'm not sure whether I've ever heard Portuguese spoken (probably have) but I can tell it in writing apart from Spanish. I could probably tell Canadian French from the Parisian I was taught as they have different conversational idioms.

I got engaged on a conversation with this guy
from Bolder, who has been in South America and
asked me if I spoke Spanish because his wife did.
You should have seen his face all confused and shocked
when I told him that "mine is a English only household".

This all reminds me how I was angered by a local radio talk show host today who was trying to tie Martin Luther King with illegal immigration which he, the host, seems to embrace, and that Martin Luther King would be so against the "racist idiots" who say and do what they do toward all the "new residents" among us. I wanted to strangle the radio. I knew people would try to USE Martin Luther King day in this way.
I think we're losing this fight and we have George W. Bush to blame.Illegal aliens remain exempt from American laws, while they DEMAND American rights...
