Poll: America Is More Conservative Than Liberal

The annual State of the States report out from Gallup shows that a majority of Americans self-identified as conservatives in 2013. The polling agency reports that the highest concentration of conservative residents is in Wyoming; conversely, there are fewer conservatives in Washington D.C. than anywhere else in the Nation.
In Wyoming, more than half of those surveyed (51.4 percent) said they identified as conservatives.



D.C. was recorded as the most liberal area in the Nation, with just 22 percent of residents identifying as conservatives and 38 percent identifying as liberals. The most liberal State in the Nation was Vermont, where 27 percent of residents said they are conservatives and 32 percent identified as liberals.
Alabama, which was previously labeled as the Nation’s most conservative State in 2012, fell all the way to 10^th place in the most recent Gallup study.
While there are more conservatives in the Nation than there are liberals, Gallup notes that the numbers don’t necessarily add up to an electoral vantage for the ideological right.
Gallup reports, “There may have been more ‘blue’ states than ‘red’ states in 2013, but a clear majority of Americans are ideologically at the center or right of center. How do Democrats continue to win elections if so few Americans identify themselves as liberal? The answer may lie with moderates, which, as a voting bloc, are solidly Democratic. If moderates begin voting with Republicans in the near or long-term future, there may indeed be a Republican revival on the national level.”
