Car crash kills man trying to flee from police

DURHAM -- A Durham man was killed Monday morning while trying to get away from police in his car, according to police spokeswoman Kammie Michael.

Jorge Perez Hernandez, 27, of 311 South Lasalle St., was driving a with a revoked license when a Durham police officer spotted him driving erratically on Avondale Drive around 2:15 a.m., Michael said.

The officer attempted to stop Hernandez's vehicle, a Dodge Neon, but it ran a red light and sped off, she said.

Abiding by the department's chase policy, which directs officers to only engage in vehicle chases when the vehicle's occupants are suspected of felony crimes, the officer stopped at the light.

Several minutes later, Michael said, the same officer found the Neon wrecked against a utility pole in the 200 block of West Trinity Avenue.

According to Michael, traffic investigators believe the Neon was going too fast "to negotiate the curve" at the traffic circle at Trinity and Glendale avenues.

The Neon struck two traffic signs and sideswiped a utility pole as it slid across the traffic circle. The car was moving sideways when it struck a second utility pole, snapping it in half, Michael said.

Hernandez was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. Two other occupants of the Neon, David Lopez-Jimenez, 23, and Jose De Olguin-Rodriquez, 35, were in stable condition Monday afternoon at Duke University Hospital.

None of the men were wanted by police for outstanding warrants, Michael said.

Hernandez had a short criminal history, including being found guilty for hit and run and driving while impaired, according to court records.

Officers were looking into the possibility that the crash was alcohol-related, Michael said.

This time there were no American victims.

Nope, but I, like you, assume he was an illegal. What other reason would he have had for running? The article mentions nothing about the vehicle occupants drinking, doing drugs, commiting a crime, etc. Furthermore, there was nothing mentioned regarding an illegal substance in the vehicle. Can we also assume the two survivors of the wreck are illegals?

And the taxpayers have to pay for their hospital treatment and his funeral

In a sanctuary city, can they ask whether they are illegal? Sounds like its a moot point about the driver. What about him compadres?

My friend was rear ended in Raleigh, NC. The car drove
away. When the police came, he described the occupants of the
car & the cop said they were probably illegals & that's
why they fled. My friend had the license tag number &
the cop said if he went to the apt, they would deny it & would
not do any good. So denying a crime is a fail-safe defense
in Raleigh! He counseled my friend to use his ins
to fix his rear end. So Raleigh is not only a sanctuary
city, but a city where officers decline to investigate
crimes when there is clear evidence and reliable eye
witnesses.

When I was a kid in NC, a traffic violation was serious &
hit-n-run was unthinkable. I suppose that was before
we openly accepted folks whose first act on entering
our country was to break the law.

The irony in the whole thing is my friend has a green
card. He's went through all kinds of hoops with INS. We
punish the people who obey the law & ignore egregious
violators of it. We (in a collective sense) are getting the
country we deserve.

We had an accident where someone backed into us burning rubber in the school pickup. He had no license, no id, and could not speak english. All the police did was write up a report. No follow up. No questions. Saw him at the pickup line the next day.

We didnt have enough damage to follow up with the gentleman to see if he gave a real name or address. The system is so corrupt and broken its infuriating. I remember as a youngster too. They would always say if you dont have a way to prove who you are, they will take you down to the station until you can provide ID. Maybe that was BS, I dont know.

call the city/town manager tell him the same as what you have just posted here and make a complaint.
