WILLIAM: The Mexican Truck Victory and our next move

    ALIPAC Team:

I need the best articles coming in about the passage of the bill in the house to revoke the Mexican truck program on the homepage so I can notify our national supporter list of the victory.

I also need to know the process status of the bill. Is it headed to the Senate? If so, we need the bill number and to turn our national activist loose on the Senate asap to maximize chances of passage.

This is a major win for us and a lot of our hard work on this truck issue is paying off at long last.

    President's response

President Bush said yesterday that he would veto this legislation. To be successful, we have to crash the White House communication systems plus the assault on the Senate.

In case Mr. Bush has not noticed, the mood in the country has shifted rapidly and it might be in his best interest NOT to veto this bill.

    http://www.govtrack.us/congress/bill.xpd?bill=h110-3074

    The bill is H.R. 3074

    Section 194 -
Prohibits the use of funds made available under this Act to establish a cross-border motor carrier demonstration program to allow Mexico-domiciled motor carriers to operate beyond the commercial zones along the international border between the United States and Mexico.

Looks like it's going to committee as both House and Senate have passed their versions:
Nov 14, 2007: After passing both the Senate and House, a conference committee is created to work out differences between the Senate and House versions of the bill. A conference report resolving those differences passed in the House of Representatives, paving the way for enactment of the bill, by roll call vote. The totals were 270 Ayes, 147 Nays, 15 Present/Not Voting.

I'm no expert at reading these things so if anyone has something to clarify and/or add please do.

Apparently this bill is so full of monies appropriated the President plans to veto it and there probably won't be enough votes to override that veto.

Blunt: Democrats' Spending Spree Continues with Bloated Transportation Funding Bill

WASHINGTON, Nov. 14 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- House Republican Whip
Roy Blunt (Mo.) issued the following statement today after Democrats failed
to secure a veto-proof majority on the Transportation, Housing and Urban
    Development (T-HUD) conference report:

"Once again, this majority has passed a bloated spending bill that will
meet a familiar end: the veto pen of the president. At $3.4 billion more
than last year's bill, Democrats seem to believe this increase isn't much
of an increase at well. But if they think $3.4 billion isn't a lot of
money, I'd suggest they've been in Washington a bit too long.

"This majority in Congress came into power claiming it would be the
most open and honest this nation has ever seen. Yet, the number of earmarks
continues to skyrocket under this majority, from just over 1,400 when the
original bill was passed this summer to more than 2,100 in the conference
report we passed today. It's time Democrats stop airdropping their pet
projects into legislation at the last minute. That's the only way this
Congress will regain the trust and respect of the American people."

NOTE: The T-HUD conference report passed by a vote of 270-147.
Republicans needs 145 votes to sustain a presidential veto. The bill is a 7
percent increase ($3.4 billion) over the same bill passed in Fiscal Year
2007 and $2.8 billion more than the president requested.
